Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Drama, style and luxury - it can only be the SL 55 AMG.

The AMG tag signifies a one-upmanship above the best that Mercedes offers, and the high-performance subsidiary of the brand didn’t disappoint. With Ferrari firmly in its sights, the SL55 not only managed to produce a car worthy of the brand's heritage and reputation for quality, but gave it comfort not generally associated with the rather hard-edged AMGs of the past. The SL55 AMG was acknowledged as one of the best cars produced by Mercedes.

A tribute to the later AMG Black Series phase two R230 models, this 2002 car has seen a visual upgrade thanks to the facelift model panels and a professionally installed German-sourced body kit, along with a Bluetooth media kit, refurbished brakes and uprated supercharger. It retains the folding roof, comes with an MOT to July 2023 and a service was carried out less than 2,000 miles ago.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Dave the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I get a real kick of out driving something so unique

Motivated by the SL's brute power yet ease of usage, Dave bought the car in early 2021 and set himself a task to upgrade its visual impact. He took the car to specialists to carry out the body, interior and brake modifications.

The car has graced a few car shows but has also seen a few long-distance motorway trips, as well as a continental jaunt. It became his signature car, but he has chosen to part with the Mercedes because Dave is currently putting all of his free time into a new project.

Exterior

Beautifully presented, this car will not fail to turn heads.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with a set of Continental tyres, the 2010 front offside tyre has a minor chunk taken out of it but all of the others are in good shape. The other front tyre is less than 10 years old, with rear tyres from 2017.

The car is fitted with a set of attractive 20" Vossen alloys. The front wheels, particularly the front offside item shows minor evidence of light kerbing. Both rear wheels are in very good shape.

Bodywork

The structure of the car is solid throughout, with no discernible observation of damage or corrosion. The German-sourced body kit has been well-fitted, with even panel gaps to complement the cohesively fitted panels.

All of the doors open and close with ease. The hardtop operation is seamless, with no observation of straining from the motors.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The white paint finish has a pleasing lustre, with evidence that the owner has kept on top of the paint maintenance.

Being picky, there are a handful of blemishes to the actual paint, while free from significant road wear damage, there are paint spots noted on the top of the nearside front wing and around the arch on the nearside rear wing. The front bumper assembly shows minor perishing and occasional light marks.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The trim is in good shape, with no immediate signs of damage. The front headlamps lenses do show a little trapped moisture but dissipated during the day. All lenses and lights are in good condition.

The glass is in good condition too, with no chips but some lamination damage was evident on the rear hardtop screen.

Interior

Lavishly furnished, the car is enhanced with an up-to-date media centre.

Seats and Carpets

The red leather interior has lasted the years well.

Of course, the driver's seat shows a few signs of age, with a cracked seat fairing and a little wear on the bolster. We were told that all of the electric functions work as they should, including the cooling / heating elements. There are no rips noted on the leather with a few minor marks noted in the rear.

The carpet and mats are in good condition, all bone dry including the boot.

Dashboard

The facia is generally in good shape, with just a minor mark on the top left-hand corner and a little rippling near the binnacle. There are a few minor blemishes noted on the carbon fibre elements but otherwise, the controls, dials and instruments are in good shape. Dave confirms that all of the functions work correctly.

The car is also installed with an Alpine DAB/Bluetooth hookup.

The door cards and roof headlining are in good order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are above the expectations of a car of this age and do not show any significant signs of wear.

Mechanics

Open up the throttle and the full-blooded roar is truly intoxicating.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up without any issues, with engine management lights not flagging up any problems. The dashboard warning panel displays a warning message which pertains to the car not recognising the aftermarket LED bulbs, but it is not in any way detrimental to the car.

The German imported aftermarket exhaust sounds sensational and is in excellent condition, with nothing more than a little cold morning condensation smoke noted during the cold start. The engine runs evenly with no evidence of spluttering when idling.

The gearbox was proven to function well, with no issues in regard to its performance or feel. The engine is well presented and has seen its supercharger subject to a refurbishment and now produces higher output than the original spec AMG.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was tested on uneven country roads, and the management system dealt with the uneven surfaces well with surprisingly comfortable progress.

The car has an adjustable height ride, which operates without any issues. The car’s braking is effective and very capable of slowing the car down at high speeds, with no ill effects, vibrations or noise during our drive out.

The calipers have been refurbed and tastefully repainted. The steering operates well, with no issues with the power steering both on the move or when parking.

The Drive

As a flagship model for the brand, you should expect near perfection and the SL55 still retains that air of decadence. The car has seen tweaks to its breathing and braking which really seems to elevate its character.

One of the SL55’s main attributes is its ability to be driven as a town car, with respectable fuel economy and practicality, but there are also plenty of other tricks up its sleeve. The car handles tightly, with no notable issues from the ride and free of knocks or thuds.

We were privy to its devastating acceleration and felt confident in the way it managed the power, thanks to the impressive exhaust soundtrack, perfectly smooth gearbox and confident brakes.

Electrics and Other

The car has been fitted with a set of LED lights, as well as body panels, headlamps and door mirrors from the facelift R230 as well as several other details including the tail spoiler.

History and Paperwork

Regular servicing backs up Mercedes expected reliability.

It comes with its original servicing handbook with regular stamps and invoices over its lifetime. There are invoices totalling £3,500 worth of work over the years too. The additional work, pertaining to recent work such as the bodykit was not on hand to view, but Dave assures us that are available.

Dave also took the time and trouble to obtain two new keys for it and the car will also be sold with its registration plate - S31 BHP which can be read as 531 BHP - the car's power output. It comes with an MOT to July 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
