This SL 500 will tick a lot of boxes for a perfect summer car; convertible, 302BHP V8, luxurious interior.

This is the fifth generation SL (model code R230) and this example features a 5.0L V8 offering 302BHP. The R230 also came with an active body control system which offered automatic control of the suspension via hydraulic systems to regulate the firmness and height of the car, further improving the ride quality and handling.

This 2003 model purchased by Andrew last August to enjoy cruising around during his retirement, finished in a timeless Mercedes-Benz colour combination of Obsidian Black over Mushroom, with the all important folding hard top making it a practical car for even the colder months.

Meet the owner

It's been a lovely car when I've had the rare chance to use it, a reluctant sale.

Andrews loved driving this luxurious roadster, having acquired it in August last year. He spent time finding one which had a specification and condition he was happy with. Unfortunately due to some health issues towards the latter part of last year, Andrew is being forced to sell the car at this point after only short term ownership.

Exterior

Finished in Obsidian Black, a very popular and sought after colour, it keeps this model looking modern to this day.

Wheels and Tyres

As with the rest of the car, the wheels where a big step forward in design and construction too. Large 7 spoke alloy wheels fitted onto this SL 500. The wheels look excellent, the Mercedes-Benz centre-caps also all look great, having been refurbished by Mercedes-Benz when Andrew purchased the car.

The tyres are similar in condition, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT rubber wrap each 17" wheel also with plenty of tread and life left in them having been fitted last year.

Bodywork

This is the first SL to feature the retractable "Vario Roof", which gives a cosseted experience when up and folds away electrically with ease.

The panel gaps and shut lines look very good, as you would expect from a car of this age, no areas of concern to note. There were no signs of corrosion on the body and underneath the car looks very good too. Please take a look at the detailed media for a closer view of the bodywork around the car.

Paint

The black paintwork on this car looks excellent and a great choice that pairs so nicely with the cream leather interior.

Glass and Trim

In line with the rest of the car for its age and mileage, all the glass looks great without any cracks, chips or marks. The trim also looks in great condition around the car.

Andrew fitted a custom front grill to the car as pictured. The original grill will also be coming with the car when sold. Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail.

Interior

Full leather interior as standard and lots of electrical conveniences, the latest Mercedes-Benz never fails to produce comfortable cabins.

Seats and Carpets

The "Mushroom" leather seats look great for the mileage and age of the car, some very minor creases and wear on the outer bolsters as you would expect. They would look excellent with a little work from leather cleaner/balm.

We did notice a stain on the driver's side armrest. again potentially removable with a deep clean of the interior, other than that minor point the car looks in great condition. The carpets match the rest of the car, in great all-round condition with no major wear to note.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks great, the "Mushroom" colour theme continues, while looking at the instruments panel we noticed the protective glass/perspex for the instrument dials are scratched and would benefit from being looked at. Please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel, now with a walnut veneer and multifunctional buttons. The large steering wheel adds minimal effort required to manoeuvre this sporty convertible.

The gearstick wrapped in matching Mushroom leather again in keeping in condition with the rest of the cabin.

Mechanics

A roaring 5.0L V8 offers up ~302BHP, delivered straight to the rear wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

302BHP from the mighty 5.0L V8, this car isn't to be taken lightly, it'll take you to 60mph in 6.1 seconds while maintaining its grace and class with the silky smooth automatic 5 speed gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with ABC (Active Body Control) which offers the balance of comfort and handling; a complex system of accumulators and hydraulic fluids to regulate the firmness and heights of the suspension.

Along with the wheel refurbishment, Andrew has the brakes serviced by Mercedes-Benz when he purchased the car.

The Drive

With reliability, speed, comfort, the SL 500 manages to do it all without disappointment. You can have a sense of relief knowing that every component has probably been over-engineered and built to last.

Andrew reports and excellent drive in the SL and mentions it's one you really need to experience to fully appreciate why it's such a special car.

Electrics and Other

A car equipped with a whole host of electrical aids, navigation, automatic climate control and multi-adjustable heated electrical seats. The car has new Xenon bulbs fitted when Andrew bought the car last summer.

This UK RHD SL 500 is a desirable young-timer, perfect for this summer. In short, the R230 SL 500's offer great value for a top-end performance roadster.

The car has a healthy MOT report history along with plenty of servicing along the way. Having covered just over 40,000 miles, it's on the low end of what you tend to see for these cars. Pair that with the desirable colour combination and you have yourself an attractive proposition if you're in the market for a roadster.

Sorry, I just noticed this message. Yes I have the invoices from Mercedes for the discs, brake pads, Xeon light bulbs and rear window panels. I had the garage i bought the car from refurbish the wheels and fitted new SP sport tires which I do not have the receipts for, however I have only done about 1200 Miles and they are unmarked. The car has been garaged most of the time due to me being diagnosed with osteoporosis. Mercedes has also given the car a clean Bill of health.
