Silky smooth V12 power pushing out nearly 500BHP, do you really need any more in a GT roadster like this?

The R320 took over from the R129 SL, pitched against the most exotic car manufacturers in the world, the SL not only acted as a flagship model for the brand but came with a heritage that combines quality, safety, performance and practicality - with a touch of styling panache. The car used state of the art technology for its braking and suspension systems. One of the R230s biggest facets was the electronic folding hard top, gone were the days of having to ask a family member or neighbour for removing and storing the hard top, just a flick of the switch and the solid roof folds in to the boot.

This example is coming to market from ~2.5 years ownership, it's the "SL600" with the 5.5L V12 power-plant and presents in excellent condition having covered ~41,900 miles over it's life. Used sparingly during the pandemic, and a major B service in 2020 just ~600 miles ago.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Josh after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'd always wanted one, and love the way it looks, very subtle for a V12.

Kevin has owned this SL600 for the past 2.5 years, picking it up in October 2019. In that time, he's added ~900 miles to the clock, the car really has been used sparingly over the past couple of years.

In 2020 he actioned a major B service that included a thorough servicing of the braking system, coming to a cost of ~£2,000. He's also had the wheels refurbished too, the car looking in fine fettle for its age. He'll be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments section below.

Subtle yet poised, the SL600, particularly in Briliant Silver Metallic, looks dateless.

Wheels and Tyres

Optioned with 18" AMG 5 spoke alloys, the wheels look in great condition having been refurbished in the current ownership.

The wheels are shod in Michelin PilotSports all round, a fine choice of tyre to effectively deliver and control the power from the V12. View the picture gallery to see the wheels up close.

The bodywork on this car looks great. Shut-lines and panel gaps look very good, and all doors etc open and close with ease. The same can be said for the convertible roof, watch the end of the video to see it opening.

We didn't observe any corrosion to the bodywork on our visit, what you'd expect given the age and mileage of this car. Again, watch the video review to see the bodywork across this roadster.

Finished in "Brilliant Silver Metallic" (744U), the finish is very good, even in colour across all the panels and deep lustre from and finish from the lacquer.

There are just one or two stone chips to the front of the car, and the drivers door as some small nicks to the leading edge, but this is us looking very hard for something to write about. All in all, very good.

Glass and Trim

All the trim across the car looks in good condition and present as expect, the V12 badges subtly hidden away on the front wings.

The glass is in very good condition, just the smallest areas of delamination occurring to the corner of a couple of pieces of glass when we looked very closely, nothing that catches your eye.

The sumptuous quality of the interior build still holds up nicely, a smart grey colourway.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in "Exclusive Leather" in grey (508A), the seats are full electric, heated, memory and have the massage feature too, top of the line. They present in excellent condition, clearly they've been cared for over the years, really no major wear to note. The "V12" logo embossed in the headrests is a lovely touch on the SL600.

The car was optioned with velour floor mats, and "Deisgno alcantara alpaca gray" headlining for the roof (Y85). All present in very good condition, along with the kick plates on the door sills.

A smart affair, grey leather and to compliment and provide some contrast, there are some "Ash Black" wood trim pieces to the centre console.

Everything looks in good condition, no damage noted, a detail would probably just freshen up some of the controls. View the image gallery to see the interior up close.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Gloss black trim inserts on both the steering wheel and gear selector, both present in good condition in line with the mileage and age of the car.

the car features keyless start technology, with the "Start/Stop" button featuring atop the automatic gear stick.

Nearly 500BHP on offer, delivered effortlessly to the rear wheels through a slick 5 speed automatic, these V12s offer power a plenty.

Engine and Gearbox

We all know the team at AMG create some truly wonderful power-units, but this top of the line "standard" Mercedes-Benz is not to be sniffed at. The power output from the 5.5L block is more than enough for the type of driving most people will be doing in a roadster such as this.

Watch the cold start video to see the car spring in to life, a 12 cylinder orchestra, and see the car out on the road for a short run.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes had a thorough going through as part of a Mercedes-Benz B service at the main dealer in 2020, some ~600 miles ago. We didn't observe any issues with the brakes or the suspension on our short trip out with the car and Kevin.

The Drive

Cruising, that is what these cars are really about, and with the refined V12 upfront you have plenty of torque and power at your disposal to make mince meat of any journey.

Electrics and Other

This is a car that has been well spec'd from factory. Along with the massage seats, the car was optioned with; premium Bose sound system, TV, folding mirrors, Bi-Xenon lights, Keyless start, proximity controlled cruise control, parking sensors, heated screen wash system, mobile hand-free connectivity.

History and Paperwork

Just ~41,900 miles on the clock, a major B service by the main dealer ~600 miles ago and present in excellent condition in a smart colourway, this is a cracking V12 roadster.

Coming to market from ~2.5 years of ownership, the car comes with a healthy stamped up service book, and condition that matches the below average mileage covered.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi Kevin,

Hi Kevin,

I’ve placed a bid but your reply stating no issues with A,B,C etc suspension has only allowed me to bid a low bid as your reply lacked depth.

I accept you have done very limited miles but do you know of any of its past before you??

My comment re loss of power was based on customers requests on service schedule as documented in last service invoice .

Hey Kevin, I see the car has only done 600 miles over the last two years, and unfortunately this generation of SLs’ suspensions tend to fail if not driven for a while and can be a very expensive fix. Have you done any servicing on the ABC suspension (changing the fluids, replacing the pump)? What about the SBC and the roof mechanism?

Prior to last service comment that car was losing power under load?

Good Morning Kevin.

I’ve owned a SL600 and now would like one as a classic weekend car……l had one but sadly it had multiple electrical issues in 2012 at 7 years old so l sold it for a S500.

Have you had any A,B,C suspension issues or know of any leaks in the cars past??

Any known roof seal issues ??

Thanks, please summarise the history or up post photos of it. Thanks

Hi, please would you summarise the service history, what is the registration number for the car and do you know if it’s ULEZ compliant
