Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The CLK 500 coupe is a genuine modern classic, packing a V8 in its grand tourer body.

The second generation of Mercedes CLK carried over the sterling reputation of the mid-sized coupe with even more refinement, power and grace. With the same quality and ability to carry 4 people as its bigger sisters, these fully equipped grand tourers also offered a genuine novelty. Thanks to its stout chassis platform, the designers were confident enough to create a genuine pillarless coupe, evoking the classic sporting Mercedes coupes of the 1960s. The M113 5.0-litre 24-valve fuel-injected V8 engine offers ample power and flexibility to complement the balance of a luxurious ride and fine handling. Performing as a luxury tourer with a hint of agility, there are not many other V8 coupes of this calibre, which offer subtlety and elegance. A modern classic in every sense of the word, the CLK Mercedes comes with the guarantee of quality, sophistication and comfort.

Finished in silver with a black leather interior, this 2003 CLK 500 Elegance has been well and truly pampered by each one of its 3 previous owners. Superbly appointed, it has an excellent service record, just ~48,262 miles on the clock, two keys, and an MOT to November 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The CLK500 is almost as quick as my old Porsche 930, and has its own very pleasing but different soundtrack.

Used very much as an occasional car, Richard has a long history of driving prestigious cars. Initially wanting the cabriolet, he drove the coupe and concluded he wasn't missing much due to the pillarless design.

Unfortunately, both Richard and his wife are far less mobile than they were and need a higher car now with access becoming more difficult. After ~5 enjoyable years, it is time for someone else to enjoy the V8 noise and Mercedes style along with its sheer usability. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Exceptionally presented, its sparkling condition really betrays this CLK's age.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17” 7-spoke alloys are all in tidy condition, with no significant signs of any noticeable damage.

Fitted with a full set of Pirelli tyres, the rear items date from 2021, with the front two slightly older. All display an even and legal amount of tread.

Bodywork

The exterior of the car presents very well, with no discernible corrosion or dents observed, other than a slight sign of age noted on the inner lips of the rear arches. The panel fit and gaps are all tight, with neatly aligned bumpers. All doors open and close with ease. The underside of the car is solid, with no issues noted on the floor pan. The boot floor, inner wheel wells, suspension mounts and engine bay also appear to be in good shape.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish is well above the expectations of a car of this age, with a decent lustre and no significant signs of ageing other than a mild under-paint rash just above the nearside front wheel arch. There are a handful of minor surface marks in places, most noticeable on the nose of the car and the nearside rear wing, but otherwise free of scuffs and chips. The lack issues usually caused by outdoor elements supports the car's long-term garage storage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all free from notable cracks or chips, we did notice a little lamination damage on the rear screen edges. The headlamp lenses show mild signs of age, otherwise, all of the lights and lenses are in good order.

Richard also mentioned that the V8 front wing emblems were installed by a previous owner, but otherwise, the trim is perfectly mounted and correct for the model.

Interior

Lavish with high-grade materials, the cabin has been well looked after.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are all in excellent condition, with nothing more than the mildest of wear on the driver seat bolster.

The carpets are all very tidy, with no evidence of damp. The boot shows very light use. Take a look through the images to see the detail and condition.

Dashboard

The understated but lavish cabin is highlighted with the subtle use of veneer and quality plastics, which have all lasted exceptionally well. The cabin trim is in great condition with very little in terms of wear.

We couldn’t spot any issues with the condition of the switchgear, controls or dials and everything is said to function as it should. The door cards and headlining are also in excellent condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and automatic gear selector are both in great condition, unmarked and free from any noticeable signs of ageing. What you'd expect given the low mileage nature of the car.

Mechanics

Smooth and powerful, the neatly presented V8 engine pulls with confidence and sounds great.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start procedure did not pose any issues, firing up immediately, with no unwanted noises coming from the engine. The dashboard warning lights remained off once the engine was on tick-over. The car idled very smoothly with no undulations or hiccups and no signs of unwanted exhaust smoke after the initial condensation cleared. There were no fluid leaks from the car.

The 5G-Tronic automatic transmission was demonstrated to work perfectly well, with Richard not reporting any issues with the shifts or kick down and told us it was smooth and responsive. Watch the video to hear and see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car braked safely and evenly, behaving very much like a modern car in that respect. The suspension was free from any form of vibrations or knocks, with the car confidently corning without creaks.

The Drive

The seamless power delivery of the 5.0-litre 24-valve fuel-injected V8 engine was demonstrated, once we found a clear stretch of road, the car engine tone remained composed as we reached the legal speed limit. Its abilities are best suited to long distances, yet it performed perfectly around the slower roads, with Richard reporting respectable fuel consumption for a V8 and no issues in terms of the oil pressure and engine temperature.

The CLK is precise and graceful on the move, but its true abilities are in its cruising dynamics, feeling stable and reassuring on the road. The pillarless body, complemented by the thin roof pillars offers the sensation of a cabriolet, without the additional weight.

Electrics and Other

Richard told us all the electrics in the CLK are functioning to his knowledge, he mentioned the heated seats and electric rear window blind were in good working order. The car has a fully functional Alpine sat-nav unit installed. This is the only aftermarket provision fitted to the car and it also retains its spare wheel, tool kit, warning triangle and first aid kit.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~5 year ownership, this CLK 500 is beautifully presented, and regular servicing has helped this CLK provide a reliable experience.

First registered by Mercedes Bromley in March 2003, it comes with 15 service stamps over its lifetime, with the most recent service carried out in October 2023 and has only travelled 50 miles since then.

Most of the invoices are for servicing, with suspension, steering and brake work in 2015 and 2016, followed by new front calipers, pads, discs and suspension arms in 2018. A sensor and condenser were replaced in 2023. Richard also pointed out that the wheels were refurbished in 2010. It comes with an MOT to November 2024 and two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
