Quite possibly the most ultimate grand tourer ever made - read on to find out more about this awesome car.

German engineering at its finest. Costing over £117,000 when new in base form, the SL 55 AMG Kompressor is a ~496BHP two-seater sports car restricted to 155mph, but reported to be capable of exceeding ~200mph with the restrictor removed. A massive powerhouse of an engine which launches the car from 0-60mph in a staggering ~4.6 seconds.

This particular 2003 Mercedes SL 55 comes with a few well-chosen extras, including the lovely red leather with heating, cooling and massaging seats, adaptive cruise control which was quite an expensive extra when new for the time, Parktronic system which includes parking sensors to the front and rear, there are 18” multi-spoke alloy wheels, and of course, the panoramic automatic hard top.

Just two previous keepers have had the pleasure of this wonderful 2003 Mercedes SL55 AMG Kompressor.

Daniel is a sports car specialist that found this low mileage, low ownership SL 55 AMG in superb condition. He has had some jobs on the car, such as a recent "A service" at Mercedes Benz, and a new MOT was given, meaning it has a clean bill of health for its new custodian.

Panoramic, removable roof is the ultimate must-have option making it the perfect usable convertible.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18” AMG original wheels are in very good condition, with no apparent signs of damage, being picky we noticed a small amount of white worm in places under the lacquer of the diamond cut faces - an easy repair at some point in the future.

The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining - noted on the recent MOT was that the fronts were slightly cracking but were deemed safe for use, and an MOT was granted.

Bodywork

Looking around the beautiful SL55 AMG, the bodywork is in excellent shape with no dings or dents spotted. The panel gaps align nicely all around the car, with no visible issues to mention.

The panoramic roof is the SL’s party trick, fully opening and closing in a matter of seconds at the touch of a button; it’s perfect for all weathers.

Paint

Finished in Obsidian Black (197U), the paintwork on the Mercedes is in excellent condition.

There is the odd stone chip here and there, as you would expect, - but really nothing that needs any attention. This is one of the best SLs we've seen in recent years.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no apparent scratches, and the seals also appear in good order.

The Bi-xenon headlights are in good condition with no splits or cracks, and the same can be said for the lower fogs and rear lights.

Interior

What a place to be - leather, heated, cooling and massaging seats - life can be so tough sometimes.

Seats and Carpets

What more can we say about the seats in the Mercedes? They are simply fantastic! Red leather AMG seats hold you snugly, and there are no signs of excessive wear to the bolsters apart from some minimal creasing. All the significant bits, like the heating, cooling, and massaging, are working as they should

The carpets inside the SL are in excellent condition with no signs of wear, and there is a set of factory-fit mats to protect them.

Inside the boot is nice and clean, and there is also a Mercedes cleaning kit to help keep the SL55 in the tip-top condition it has become accustomed to.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition. Finished in black leather, there are no scuffs to point out. The instruments are working correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of ~58,333 miles and no warning lights are displayed when the engine is running.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good order, with just some light shining on the leather in keeping with the age of the SL. The gearknob is finished in red leather to match the seats and is in good condition, and this also incorporates the engine start/stop button.

Mechanics

5.5 litres should be enough for most - but the SL55 AMG is also supercharged, taking things to the next level.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the amazing 5.5 litre, supercharged M113K engine, breathed on by the wizards at AMG, this is one grand tourer which is a force to be reckoned with. The engine fires up as you would expect, without hesitation. No untoward noises come from the engine bay, and there were no signs of any leaks when we visited the car.

The gearbox is a five-speed automatic, or there is the option to use the steering wheel buttons to shift up or down. The change is smooth, and as you would expect, the SL55 pulls like a train through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, no knocks or bangs are coming from any corner of the car. The SL is fitted with ABC Suspension (Active Body Control), which results in a superb handling car capable of giving an incredible driving experience.

The Drive

This is one of those cars which gives you the grin factor as soon as you step in. Then upon starting it, the grin just gets bigger! It is a superb machine with amazing technology, creating a brilliant two-seater with ~496bhp.

What is there not to like?

Electrics and Other

Inside, the SL55 AMG switchgear is in good condition, and everything is reported to work as it should. There is also satellite navigation as part of the factory head-unit. However, please keep in mind that this is a system from 2003 and is less up-to-date than more modern units.

Please would you share the 2023 inspection report from the Mercedes service? Its the red amber, green checklist that shows recommended work, you have shared the one from 2014, so hope there are no expensive fixes needed based on Merc inspection. Thanks

I did share this video with Trade Classics to add to the description, but it seems to have missed it. I don’t believe they give you the yellow sheets anymore just a video I only received an white invoice copy from memory but I will double check regards Dan

Do you know if the ABC suspension pump has been replaced in the life of the car, thanks

Hi I’ve brought a brand new abc pump as I thought it was noisy turned out to be a pulley bearing so replace that as the pump was and still is perfect the suspension does not lower even after 4 plus weeks of standing If reserve is met I’ll give the new owner the pump .

Good morning jack the car was in dry storage not being used as you can see from the mileage it did have I believe two oil changes in this time but not via Mercedes I’ll ask the previous owner for some more details regards Dan
