Arguably the ultimate sporting roadster is the Mercedes-Benz SL - this is the fifth generation SL (model code R230) and this example a 5.0L V8 offering 302BHP. The R230 also came with an active body control system which offered automatic control of the suspension via hydraulic systems to regulate the firmness and height of the car, further improving the ride quality and handling.

This 2004 example has just ~54,000 miles on the clock, and being a SL500 features that wonderful 5.0L V8 experience. It comes with a pack of invoices charting its maintenance over time, and presents in excellent condition.

Exterior

Gone were the boxy lines of the R129, the R230 introduced curves in the design and a front-end that followed the marques design progression.

Wheels and Tyres

As with the rest of the car, the wheels where a big step forward in design and construction too. Large 5-spoke 18" alloy wheels fitted on this SL500 giving the car a sporty stance.

We noticed a little corrosion around the centre of the alloys and the rear offside has very minor area of curbing. Overall they are great, and paired with a set of grippy tyres with plenty of tread left for the new owner to enjoy straight away.

Bodywork

This is the first SL to feature the retractable "Vario Roof", which gives you the best of both worlds - that wind through your hair rush, and the handling and performance of a coupe with the roof up.

The bodywork on this 2004 SL500 looks in excellent condition all around the car and it nicely matches its mileage. Please take a look at the exterior photos and videos for a detailed look at the bodywork of the car.

Paint

This SL500 is finished in an attractive, classic Mercedes-Benz "Cubanite Silver", it's easy to see how well looked after this car has been over the years.

An excellent and even finish of the paint on this car, with no blemishes, or signs of neglect. Just a few stone chips on the front of the car, as you'd expect. View the exterior video for a full tour of the paint.

Glass and Trim

As you would expect, in excellent condition for a car of this calibre. We did not notice any chips, cracks or scratches in the glass.

The trim matches the condition of the rest of the car, in excellent and extremely well-looked after condition.

Interior

This SL500 has evolved to a new level of luxury, with a full leather interior as standard and a whole host of electric features focused on both performance and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

Inside the cabin, you'll find black leather seats in keeping with the sporty feel of the car, both of which are in really good condition with very little wear.

The rear seats look really good and look almost untouched. The door cards are equally in great condition. Please take a look at the video footage for a full tour of the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard in the SL500 looks great with no issues to report, the instrument binnacle has a deep surround to ensure you can see the dials clearly with the roof down and in the suns glare.

All the dials, bezels and controls are in great condition and Lee reports everything works as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multifunction steering wheel puts you in full control of the vehicle, both from a driving and electric perspective.

The steering wheel and gear knob both reflect the mileage and care of ownership. Very little wear was found on this excellent example.

Mechanics

The 5.0L V8 delivers 302BHP of power through to the rear wheels, via the later 7 speed automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

302BHP a pedal press away, the 5.0L V8 is fantastic to drive with its silky smooth automatic transmission, an upgrade to a 7 speed unit from the earlier R230's.

Suspension and Brakes

Fitted with ABC (Active Body Control) which offers the balance of comfort and handling; a complex system of accumulators and hydraulic fluids to regulate the firmness and heights of the suspension.

Hi Lee, further to Stuart’s query in respect of the suspensions hydraulic pump advisory. Have you looked into the replacement cost of the pump, which is a common fault on these models. Regards Martin

No because I’ve not had it long and the garage said it’s only advisory, but everything works fine no lights on dashboard,the car has just sat in my garage since last august with lots of polishing
