When new the Mercedes Benz SL600 was placed at the very top of the R230 SL line-up, offering an almost unique experience, something of an ultimate long-distance cruiser. Powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the M275 V12, the SL600 comfortably slotted itself into the supercar category, but its presence, power and character were far more subtle than its rivals.

Modern features like Active Body Control and electro-hydraulic Sensotronic brakes made the SL600 seem like a car designed for comfort and convenience rather than handling ability. Yet, its everyday common sense combined with a devastating straight-line performance went hand in with Mercedes' renowned build quality and engineering durability.

Of all of my fathers cars, this was the one I felt most connected to.

Jack's father bought the car in 2009, and it was transferred under Jack's name late last year as he considered keeping it. Stored in a secure garage, Jack periodically visited to make sure it was running well.

However, a change in circumstances and its lack of use have swayed his decision to sell the car. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Poised and mean, the SL600 still commands a respectable presence.

Wheels and Tyres

The 5 spoke alloys are smartly presented, with just mild signs of age.

Jack has recently had full set of new tyres fitted, Tomket Sports on the front and Kumho’s on the rear. Take a look through the gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The exterior looks very positive, the panels flush with the body with decent shut lines throughout. All of the doors open and close with ease. There were no visual signs of corrosion or panel damage noted. The structure of the car appears to be in good order, with the underside, wheel wells and floor pan free of damage.

Paint

The "Obsidian Black" paint has a decent gloss and an even hue. There are a few marks consistent with the car's storage, mainly light scuffs on the boot lid, roof and bonnet. A detailer should easily be able to remedy these. There are also a couple of minor scratches noted on the passenger doors.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and side glass are in good shape, and both door glass drop actions function as they should. The rear glass shows lamination damage on the edges. The glass seals appear to be decent. The lights present well, with mild cloudiness noted on the headlamp lenses, these are Bi-Xenon units from factory.

The body trim is cleanly presented, the car has some aftermarket stickers on the rear as pictured. The bumpers fit flush to the body, the front bumper has a mark above the number plate.

Complemented by its low mileage, the cabin has been well cared for.

Seats and Carpets

The "Anthracite" seats are cleanly presented, with some wear on the drivers side bolster. They are fully electric with massage function as pictured, the electric adjustment functions all appear to work, except the driver-side tilt buttons, but it will move fore/aft for access to the rear storage bin.

The carpets are decent, all bone dry and free of significant wear. The driver-side rubber mat will need replacing. The boot has not seen much use and also dry.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console look good, with minor marks in places but generally free of wear. The car is optioned with "Ash Black" wood trim as pictured. The dials are legible and the functions, such as the radio, heating and air-con appeared to function. The odometer read ~50,274 at the time of our visit, Jack has covered ~31 miles since then, the current mileage is ~50,305.

The trim and headlining are in good shape, "Designo Alcantara" option. The driver's side door card has a little damage to its edge. Overall it presents well and a deep valet should bring the interior up to a positive standard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multifunction steering wheel features the wood trip, and the condition is in keeping with the age and used of the car. The automatic gear selector is also free of significant wear, it does appear to be missing the Mercedes-Benz logo on the top.

Mechanics

Refined and able, the SL600 character is not only measured in power but also its perfect driving manners.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start process was trouble-free, with no unwanted noises heard from the engine. The car idled smoothly, as we left the engine running. There were no engine-specific management dashboard lights flagged up during our visit. The V12 engine appears to be leak-free and have decent hoses and ancillaries.

The automatic gearbox operates without fault, engaging drives without slippage or delay. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride is smooth, with no unwanted noises from the wheels. On the move the car remained stable.

It brakes efficiently and is free of noises or vibrations.

The Drive

Offering exceptional acceleration and a refined sound, the Mercedes M275 Turbo V12 engine hands out seemingly unlimited power with exceptional finesse. Built to last, these engines also found their way into numerous supercars, sealing the status of the unit as one of the best engines in the world.

We were offered a sedate cruise along a 30 mph road, in which the car behaved impeccably, pulling smoothly without any hiccups or unwanted noises. Controllable and docile at these speeds, its potential, rather sensibly, was not provoked but there was a glimpse of the fire in its belly. No thuds or wobbles were noted to come from the wheels.

Electrics and Other

The car is well optioned from factory, things like the premium sound system and TV, park assist, massage seats, Bi-Xenon lights, folding mirrors. Other than the tilt function on the seat, the other electrics are in working order as far as Jack is aware. Jack has fitted a new battery on 15-09-2025.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from almost ~16 and a half years of family ownership, this well optioned SL600 has seen casual and careful use over the years, with bills and MOT's suggesting straightforward maintenance.

First registered in March 2004, it was bought by Jack's father in 2009 from a specialist car dealer with ~33,000 miles on the clock. Since he bought it, the car has spent much of its life secured indoor storage.

The car comes with over £4,000 worth of invoices, which include cosmetic repairs, service, coil pack and coil springs. It retains some of its older MOT certificates which flag up very little drama, other than the usual tyres and brake wear. It was last serviced about 1,300 miles ago, a new battery was fitted on 15-09-2025.

It comes with its owner's pack and booklets, 3 documented services, and two keys and has an MOT to November 2025. As mentioned, the car is well optioned from new;

Hi Barrie,
No, it’s always been like that. I spoke to the mechanic who fitted the battery for me about it and he said that the electrical consumers message will always come on if the car hasn’t been driven for a period, it’s the same for all SLs. It basically means that the battery is less than 80% and so some of the add on features won’t work initially. But as soon as you’ve driven the car for two minutes, everything will work as intended. For context, I don’t drive it very often, which is why the message typically always come on for me.
If you want more context around how the battery works, I can give you the number of the mechanic who worked on the car, he said he’d be happy to explain.

Can you advise me , was the battery that you replaced in September the one in the rear of the car which operates the electronics as opposed to starting the car?
If so- when it was replaced is the replacement a AGM battery or Lead Acid ?

It was the battery in the back that was replaced. I’m not sure what sort of battery it is (there’s a sticker on the top of it obstructing the view of it). I’ll ring the garage tomorrow and check with them.

Hi Barrie!
So, initially when I got it tested, I had advisories for a couple of the tyres. I bought 4 brand new tyres and got them fitted and the MOT passed with no advisories or warnings, a clean bill of health!
