Timeless grand tourer elegance with a muscular V8 and top-down cruising luxury - effortless performance and refinement in one sleek package.

The Mercedes-Benz SL 500 (R230) represents the perfect meeting point between luxury grand tourer and high-performance sports car. As part of the fifth-generation SL range, it continued Mercedes’ long-standing tradition of building glamorous, technologically advanced convertibles that combine style, comfort, and performance in one irresistible package.

Its sleek bodywork houses a fully retractable Vario-roof, transforming seamlessly from a refined coupé into an open-top roadster in a matter of seconds - ideal for enjoying both city cruising and sunny countryside drives.

Under the bonnet, the 5.5L V8 delivers smooth power, paired with an automatic transmission for effortless progress. The chassis balances comfort and agility, aided by advanced suspension systems for the era, that keep the ride composed and confident. Inside, the cabin offers luxury, high-quality materials, supportive seats, and a host of features that were cutting-edge for their time.

The SL 500 is more than just a car - it’s an indulgent driving experience, built for those who want their performance served with sophistication.

This particular example is coming fresh from six and a half years ownership, and the specification includes; ParkTronic, electric folding heated mirrors, cruise control, ABC (Active Body Control) suspension, Navigation pack, electric memory heated seats, 'keyless-go' and features an updated Panasonic AVH-Z9200 DAB stereo.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Samar the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Effortless V8 power, open-top freedom and pure grand touring luxury every time you drive!

The current owner, Samar, had always wanted a Mercedes, saying, "I spent hours with my Grandfather when I was a child, driving around in his Mercedes in Switzerland, he was a salesman and I enjoyed keeping him company touring all parts of the country on its amazing roads".

Owning the SL 500 is all about enjoying the power whilst being wrapped in refined luxury, Samar tells us more, "The retractable hardtop transforms it from a quiet grand tourer to an open-air cruiser in seconds. It’s equally at home gliding down a motorway as it is carving through the country".

The Mercedes-Benz reluctantly comes to market from the current owner, Samar lets us know, "We're not in the position to enjoy it as much any more, we want to give someone else the chance to experience this amazing car".

Should you have any questions about the car, Samar would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

Smart body lines, muscular stance, and retractable hardtop, the R230 exudes timeless elegance with a touch of modern sophistication.

Wheels and Tyres

The car comes with 18" 5-spoke AMG wheels.

Generally, all appeared to be in good condition - just the occasional age-related marks and a little bubbling to the finish here and there with some light scuffing - they could be candidates to a future refurb by the new owner.

The front of the SL 500 is fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres with date codes from 2021 and a spec of 255/40. To the rear the car was again fitted with Pirelli P-Zero's from 2016 and a spec of 285/35.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Mercedes and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Mercedes-Benz showed in lovely condition overall. Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned. Original build quality still shows as we looked over the car on our visit; both doors, bonnet, boot and the roof open and close without concern with the panels gaps all showing without concern.

There was a minor note of bubbling below the surface of the passenger side front wheel arch, although we had to look fairly close to spot this.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Well presented in a smart finish of "Metallic Obsidian Black", the coverage is even across the car with no noted imperfections to colour. We didn't note any real concerns with the paint, but if we were being picky, there were a couple of slight marks on the edge of the front quarter panel, front bumper and driver side rear bumper - but nothing major here.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, front and rear lights all appear in great condition, and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. We did note there was a slight crack on the drivers side wing mirror lens.

Badges and emblems are present, correct and look very smart - including the rear AMG badge.

The convertible hard top roof that retracts back into the rear section, and wind diffuser were both showing in great condition.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car. The interior cabin sections showed very well, just some typical marks to the entrance sills.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

Inside the cabin you’re greeted by a blend of luxury and precision - supple leather, sleek design, and all the comfort you need to make every journey feel first class.

Seats and Carpets

The electric memory and heated seats showed really well and looked very presentable finished in black leather. We noted some signs of wear to the drivers seat outer bolster and a slight scratch to the finish, typical observations considering the age of the car. It was clear however, looking over the interior, that the SL 500 has been well looked after.

Carpets in the front of the cabin show in a great condition with the boot reflecting the same standard. Underneath the cabin carpets on the floor pans showed no concerning issues.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in fantastic shape with no issues to report. Black dials with white needles looked excellent and were all functioning as expected. The odometer showed with ~43,706 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in lovely condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge, oil temp, and digital interfaces and were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel, with paddle shift function, is in keeping with the great quality of the rest of the interior.

The auto gear selector also looks to be in smart condition.

Overall, a really lovely cabin to take in the road ahead.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With its confident yet smooth 5.5L V8 engine, the SL 500 accelerates from 0-60 MPH in ~5.2 seconds, delivering an impressive ~383 BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up, we noted no concerns and the Mercedes performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all. The auto gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the SL 500 through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no observed issues.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Overall the car performed as to be expected with no concerns.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

The current owner tells us more about the driving experience with the Mercedes, "An amazing, great fun car to drive, road holding is like nothing I have experienced before with so much power when you need it. These cars are built to drive long distances and are very comfortable for this, we have driven many a long distance and enjoyed every minute".

Its 5.5L engine provides strong, linear acceleration, while the adaptive suspension balances composed handling with a plush ride. Perfect for relaxed cruising or spirited bursts, the SL 500 makes every journey feel both powerful and poised.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition.

The SL 500 is specified with tyre pressure warning function, ParkTronic (PTS), air con / climate control, heated screen wash system, electric windows, electric folding heated mirrors, ABS, telephone package, cruise control, ABC (Active Body Control) suspension, Navigation pack, electric memory heated seats, 'keyless-go' and 2 sets of keys and fobs.

The car features an updated Panasonic AVH-Z9200 DAB stereo, fitted with a customised facia panel with Apple CarPlay, Android and map functionality. Should it be required the original system has been retained in case the new owner wanted to reinstall it.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Samar told us everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

Coming from six and a half years ownership, this low mileage SL 500 has 7 service stamps in its service book and a current MOT valid until November 2025.

Always aiming to keep the car original and well kept, no major work has been done on the SL other than maintaining it, and always with Mercedes specialist garages.

The only modification made by the current owner was to replace the entertainment system with an updated Panasonic AVH-Z9200 DAB, and fitted with a customised facia panel. Should it be required the original system has been retained in case the new owner wanted to reinstall it.

We cover the history of the Mercedes in our paperwork gallery. Take a look over the previous servicing records and MOT certificates to see more behind the Mercedes-Benz.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
