Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Looks can be deceiving... a roadster with perfect cruising abilities, but with a V12 power-house hiding under the bonnet.

As the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, AMG has combined the granite-like quality of the three-pointed-star with the tuning houses devastating ability to move mountains. When the R230 SL Class was released in 2001, the marques grand-tourer hinted at the SL's intent to take on the numerous supercars that were starting to impede into the SL's territory. This was answered in 2006 by the ultimate SL up to that point, the SL65 AMG. With the twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V-12 producing over 600BHP of power, the SL65 had firmly placed the SL in the league of the raucous. However, it retains the Mercedes attributes for quality, durability and ergonomics, making it something of a usable proposition as an everyday car.

This 2006 car is a beautifully kept example of a rare right-hand-drive version. Typically it has seen a careful ownership profile throughout its life and comes with comprehensive service history and only three owners under its belt, the most recent for ~5 years. As one of a collection of Mercedes-Benz SL's owned by the current keeper, this all black, highly tuned and devastatingly quick machine offers a rare opportunity to obtain one of these limited-edition supercars.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's the ultimate Mercedes-Benz of its era, and I simply couldn't resist the opportunity to own one.

John bought the car as a bit of a spur of the moment occurrence, having always admired the cars capable and confident abilities. As a loyal devotee to the Mercedes-Benz brand, the SL65 AMG had been on his radar since it was first unleashed. It has been used as an occasional car and is still rolled out to ensure a level of mechanical fluidity.

With its increasingly lack of use, and a few plans to really use it in the future, John has concluded that it's best to let someone else enjoy the car. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions on the car.

Exterior

Imposing in its all-black appearance, this car is stealth personified.

Wheels and Tyres

The Pirelli P-Zeros were fitted around 2017 and all have a healthy amount of tread on them. The alloys have been subject to a recent refurb and therefore in excellent shape. The off-side rear and near-side front alloy are missing a couple of split rim bolts - an easy task to resolve.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in great shape, the panel fit is flush and the door all open and close with ease. The panel gaps are equal too, with no issues with the bumpers. There are no significant blemishes noted on the car, with dent-free metalwork and no distracting scuffs.

If we're being picky, there are the smallest of imperfections developing on the lower rear insides of the arches and a little on the front edge of the hardtop where it meets the top of the near-side A-pillar, you'll have to look very closely to see these. John also mentions that the boot struts might need a quick look at, as on occasion it doesn't stay open. View the video review to see the detail.

Paint

The Obsidian Black Metallic paintwork is in excellent condition, with a good evenly balanced shine throughout. There is some typical age-related light surface swirling, nothing a professional detail couldn't resolve.

The car is mostly free from distracting paint chips, with the odd but minor road wear mark noted up-front but has no clumsy or cheap touch-ups. Typically for a low car, there is scuffing noted under the front bumper. The car has seen indoor storage with a car cover.

Glass and Trim

No issues with the glass, with all of the panes in good condition and all free from laminate damage or chips. The glass and door rubbers, as one would expect, is in great condition with no evidence of outdoor elements. The detailing on the car, such as the grill, trim and intakes are in good order.

Interior

Chiselled with precision, the interior quality always shines through.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with electronic massage AMG seats, they have aged well, just some small signs of creasing in the leather. The seats retain their shape and have clearly been looked after.

All electric functions are said to work. The carpets are good, with no issues of note. Some of the seat plastics, door cards and rear cubby holes show a few light marks but they simply reflect the gentle wear expected on a car of this age. The inside of the roof on this car was optioned with the Mercedes-Benz Designo Alcantara finish, matching the cover for the instruments on the dash.

Dashboard

The quality shines through on the facia, with the condition of the multi-material dashboard retaining Mercedes' fine work on their showcase model. The stitching is intact, with no major blemishes to report, although the burred walnut wood trim has a few cracks on the centre console and the leather padding above the light switch has a little mark. The switchgear, dials and controls are all good.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multi-functional steering wheel is in good condition, with no damage or significant wear to be noted. The gear stick and the gaiter are good. All are well kept for a car of this age and mileage.

Mechanics

The SL65 AMG has an almost obscene amount of power on tap for a roadster.

Engine and Gearbox

A twin-turbo V12 block, handcrafted by AMG technicians, it's capable of pushing out over 600BHP. The engine has been subject to regular servicing, so no issues were noted during the start up video, the V12 engine running well with no issues observed with the engine on tick-over. All dashboard lights remained off, and the engine shows no signs of leaks, smoke or unwanted noises. The gearbox is said to be in tip-top shape with no issues with its function, a 5-speed automatic in this model.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has been standing in the garage for a few weeks as the car was on trickle charge, so there is a little build-up of surface rust on the discs but a longer drive will clear up this minor issue immediately. The pads have been replaced fairly recently. No noises were noted from the brakes or suspension.

The Drive

Needless the say the big focus is the engine, which is said to pull magnificently if pressed but given the current location of the car and its low usage, we think it rarely gets opened up.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrical items tested, which included the roof and windows, as well as the air-conditioning, operate without fault. The roof motors did not sound strained.

History and Paperwork

A UK supplied RHD example of one of Mercedes-Benz' flagship roadsters, finished in black, this ~600BHP V12 presents an excellent acquisition opportunity.

With a recorded ~69,800 miles on the clock, the car comes with a solid service history. It has covered around 3,000 miles in the current ownership over a period of ~5 years, and in that time the has been subject to alloy wheel refurbishment, a new voltage converter and sundry items such as brake pads. The car has not needed any major items to be replaced. It comes with an MOT to 25-04-2023 and the distinctive registration plate comes as part of the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
