Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Pairing agile roadster handling with grand tourer comfort, the Mercedes SLK 280 features luxurious styling inside and out.

The SLK-Class was first launched in 1996, and was built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen until production ended in 2020. SLK is derived from sporty (sportlich), lightweight (leight), and short (kurz).

The idea behind the SLK-Class was to attract young professionals looking for a good time in a fun sports car. The SLK roadster offers just that in a small two-seat roadster form with a folding hardtop. This is the second generation of SLK, known internally as the R171. This series features a longer wheelbase, increased length and width, 40% increased use of high strength steel, 7-speed automatic transmission, adaptive two-stage airbags, head/thorax side airbags and a revised roof mechanism, deployable in ~22 seconds with a rotary-pivoting rear window enabling a more compact folded roof stack and increased boot storage.

The car comes to market after ~10 years of ownership, having covered ~47,177 miles over its years, with under ~5,000 miles travelled in the last ~5 years. The car has recently completed its MOT with no advisories and benefitted from an oil service and air con re-gas.

This SLK features a specification that includes: Parktronic system, leather steering wheel and gear shift, instrument cluster, universal telephone package, air scarf system, 7-speed transmission, anti-theft and sensor alarm, siren bracket for increased security, air con and heated seats.

Overall, this SLK is ready to go for the new owner; ready for warmer months and many more miles on the road.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Gareth the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A car that I've been really proud of over my ownership - looks, power and performance, it's everything I've wanted it to be.

Having owned the SLK for the past ~10 years, it's been a car that Gareth, the current owner, has adored, he told us "It's a perfect combination of sedate GT and all out speed freak when you want it to be. Plus you can take it on cooler days with the heated seats and air scarf".

Initially it was the, "looks, speed and practicality of the hardtop convertible", that attracted Gareth to the Mercedes. It's been well looked after over its years remaining all original and having been garaged over ownership.

The Mercedes isn't just a looker, Gareth lets us know that the performance is impressive as well, he said "The kick down surprises passengers, it's a beast when you floor it. It's been an effortless and enjoyable ownership".

Finally Gareth said, "I have a new project car and need the garage space, so I'm looking to sell the SLK. I don't use it as much as it should be used so it's time for a new owner to enjoy it to the max."

Gareth will be available to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The SLK has Mercedes quality all over it - sleek styling and modern elegance all finished in a beautiful coat of Obsidian Black.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mercedes is fitted with 17" silver five double-spoked wheels with a central Mercedes badge. The wheels look in good condition. We noted a few signs of kerb rash and lacquer peel to the badges. Ideally, the wheels would benefit from future restorative work.

The SLK is fitted with Yokohama tyres to the rear and BCT tyres to the front. The rear set showed a tyre spec of 245/40 and front sets show 225/45. The tyres appear to have a good amount of tread left and date codes from 2019 at the rear and 2013 at the front.

For a more detailed view of the SLK's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

Looking over the SLK during our visit, we noted that the car maintains good visual panel gaps, and both doors, the bonnet, and the boot open and close smoothly. The automated hardtop works without concern and functions well.

We didn't observe any major scratches or dings to the panelling. There was a slight scuff noted to the underside of the front bumper due to its lowered profile, and to the rear offside quarter panel, although these areas were not overly concerning.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Obsidian Black coat is even in finish across all the panels, overall showing in good condition. There were no signs of any major concerns with the coverage and the colour showed nicely in the light.

We noted a couple of stone chips to the bonnet and front panels, although these areas didn't detract from the overall finish and looks in line with its age. There were slight signs of swirl marks to the finish although this is fairly common for black cars and would benefit from a machine polish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the SLK looked in great condition, in line with the age; we didn't notice any cracks or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look in good condition too, matching the rest of the car.

The front and rear lights looked well-maintained and well presented. Badges and motifs are all present and look great in their presentation.

The automatic hard top worked as it should and caused us no issues in its operation.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

Smart black Nappa leathers grace the cabin area of the SLK - stylish comfort that compliment the exterior nicely.

Seats and Carpets

The Mercedes is kitted out with a black Nappa leather interior, overall the seats look in good condition. We didn't note any concerns with rips or tears to the seats.

The main carpet of the interior showed in good condition, looking underneath the mats showed the car had no concerns. Over in the boot looked in a similar condition. The interior carpet sections would benefit from a good level of valeting to bring the standard of the cabin area up.

We cover the cabin area of the SLK280 in further detail in our interior review video.

Dashboard

The dash and instrument cluster are clean and smart, with all the numbers appearing clear and legible. The odometer displayed ~47,177 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls all appeared to be in great condition, with surfaces appearing free from fogging or scratching.

Our interior gallery section offers a closer look at the Mercedes dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Mercedes steering wheel is equipped with a black leather grip and is in great condition, consistent with the mileage of this car. The automatic gear selector also appears to be in good condition.

Additional images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, are available in our Interior Gallery section - visit to see more details of what the SLK has to offer.

Mechanics

The SLK 280 delivers lovely performance from the V6, producing ~227bhp, 0-62mph takes only ~6.1 seconds and onto a top speed of ~155mph.

Engine and Gearbox

Upon starting the car, we noticed no issues with the engine and it idled smoothly. Gareth mentioned that both the engine and seven speed auto gearbox, operate very smoothly. The engine bay appeared clean and well-presented during our visit to the car.

We took the car out on local roads with Gareth to get a better feel for its performance. Throughout the drive, we shifted through the gears, saw how the car handles and noted no issues with performance.

For a closer look underneath the Mercedes and an overview of the engine bay, please refer to the mechanical video as well.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The brakes felt great and were easily able to bring the SLK to a stop.

We cover the underside of the car in our 'Mechanical Gallery' section. Head over to our video section, where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

On our short drive with Gareth the SLK performed well on the road, the V6 sounded great and gear shifts were very smooth, we didn't notice any creaks or any other unwanted noises coming from the engine, gearbox or suspension.

Our 'On the Road' video gives an overview of the car on some local roads and how it performs whilst driving.

Electrics and Other

All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and in good condition. Gareth mentioned that he's had no issues with the electrical elements of the car and confirmed everything working correctly.

Both the glass and material screen are included with the car for use when the roof is down. The automatic hard top functioned well as shown in our 'Mechanical Review' video.

We noted that the locking wheel nut box and key was present in the interior - over in the boot section, the spare wheel, jack and mini toolkit was present.

History and Paperwork

The SLK comes to market from ~10 year ownership, covering a low ~47,177 miles over its years, all with under ~5,000 miles traveled in the last ~5 years.

The SLK features a specification that includes: Parktronic system, leather steering wheel and gear shift, universal telephone package, air scarf system, seven-speed auto transmission, anti-theft and sensor alarm, air con, siren bracket for increased security and heated seats.

An oil and filter change, along with an air con re-gas, was carried out in June 2024. 2 new tyres were fitted in May 2020. The front brake pad and sensor was replaced in September 2017.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
