The SL-Class R231 was the sixth generation of the SL, first announced at the North American International Auto Show in January 2012. The R231 introduced all-new aluminum bodywork, with its weight advantage offset, higher safety and convenience equipment. Standard equipment included an adaptive windscreen wipe/wash system, and increased shoulder and elbow room. The 3.5L V6 offers the driver ~302BHP, providing a thrilling experience with the roof up or down.

This particular example comes to us with only 1 former keeper, it's been in the current ownership for ~7 years and has ~43,000 miles on the clock. It is finished in the ever popular "Obsidian Black" paint with a red leather interior. The history of this car is extensive, the car being serviced at the Mercedes-Benz every year.

Meet the owner

Once I saw the car for the first time finished in black with a red leather interior, I thought it was beautiful and just knew this was the car for me.

Stephen previously owned an earlier SL with a removable hardtop and convertible soft-top. He loved the idea of a convertible hardtop, giving him the option to drive it how he wanted all year round. Lookers Brighton sourced an R231 for him, when he saw this black over red leather example, Stephen described it as beautiful and the perfect car for him. He enjoys driving the car with the roof both up and down, appreciating its streamlined exterior and timeless design, he has taken the car to the south of France and Spain previously.

After a hip replacement operation, Stephen finds sitting in a low position for long journeys less comfortable than before, so he is reluctantly parting with his beloved SL350. He has taken excellent care of the car, having it cleaned and regularly serviced every year at his local main dealer. Exterior

There's no denying the striking appeal of the SL350, thanks to its muscular AMG Sport styling.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with multi-spoke wheels from the factory, they appear to be in good condition however would benefit from refurbishment. As often seen, there is surface corrosion under the lacquer on all four wheels.

The wheels are equipped with Pirelli P-Zero tires, which also seem to be in good condition. They are dated 2017. The most recent health report from Mercedes (25/07/2023) indicates tread levels of around 5-7mm. Please examine the history and paperwork section for more details.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Mercedes appears to be in excellent condition, with all the panel gaps around the car appearing well-aligned. During our visit, we didn't spot any obvious dings on the sides of the car, nor any corrosion.

Paint

Finished in a "Obsidian Black", the paint is of a high standard, with even coverage and consistent colour across each panel. We did notice some small stone chips on the bonnet that are to be expected with time. We also noticed some marks on the panels surrounding the rear window as pictured.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this SL350 AMG Sport example appears to be in great condition, consistent with the low mileage and ownership. During our visit, we did not notice any chips, or discoloration, just with the smallest crack on the passengers side. The window seals also appear to be in good condition and consistent with the overall state of the car.

Interior

An incredibly well finished cabin, with supple leather across almost every surface along with wood and metal flourishes.

Seats and Carpets

These deep yet comfortable AMG Sport seats are upholstered in red leather with black detailing, electrically adjustable and with the all important "Air Scarf" system to keep you warm. There are only minimal signs of wear on the seats, which reflect the mileage of ~43,000 miles.

A similar story is evident with the leather door cards and black carpets. Please refer to the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard is adorned with leather and features satin chrome accents. The dashboard in this SL350 exhibits no significant damage or scuffs. There were no warning lights displayed, and the odometer showed a reading of ~ 42,944 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The factory Mercedes steering wheel is equipped with a black leather grip and is in great condition, consistent with the mileage of this car. The satin chrome SL automatic gear selector also appears to be in good condition, and the steering wheel has paddles behind for control of the 7 speed automatic gearbox. Mechanics

Optioned with the AMG Sports package that includes sports suspension, this SL can handle the power with ease.

Engine and Gearbox

Stephen reports that the car starts from cold without any issues and drives smoothly, thanks to its seven-speed automatic gearbox that powers the wheels. Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in great condition and provided a smooth journey on the roads, this car optioned with the "Sports Suspension" which has 2 modes to choose from.

During our brief drive in the car, it handled just as you'd expect from a modern roadster, coming to a stop without any issues.

The Drive

Whether the roof is up or down, the Mercedes SL 350 AMG Sport delivers an incredibly fun and thrilling driving experience. The Mercedes started up without any issues to report. While on the road with Stephen, the car felt responsive and well-powered, easily handling the road and sweeping corners. We didn't notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Stephen reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car, Stephen did mention the air con is in need of a re-gassing to make it ice cold. Hello, In light of your clearly fastidious maintenance of the car, why have you not got the aircon working correctly. Are there underlying issues with it ? Many thanks, Simon.

No underlying issues. I thought it was not necessary to regas the aircon last service (it is not part of the standard service plan) but consider it could be done at the next service or sooner fir ice cool temperature
