Introduction

Timeless looks, underpinned with more modern steering and suspension design, make my MG a really drivable car that attracts admiring glances wherever I go. Subtle modifications make it an ideal daily driver- as well as a model seldom seen at shows

I have owned the car for seventeen years now, doing much work during this time. I am now using it less than I would like, so feel the time is right to let the next owner enjoy it whilst I return to open-top motoring with another, later MG.

This listing was written from information supplied by XXXXX after meeting XXXXX the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Market Auction

Alan, the seller, has created this listing themselves using our free Market Auction tool. Unlike our Curated Auctions, we haven’t photographed the car or written the listing, however we have completed 3 important security checks for your peace of mind.

V5C Checked

Alan provided a copy of the V5C logbook, which we verified against his photo ID for name and address confirmation.

Exterior

With its large chrome grille and headlamps, long sweeping wings, and running boards, the car attracts attention from onlookers wherever I go.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels are currently painted black and in good condition, but could be re-finished back to their beautiful original painted finish.

The tyres are in good condition, with almost zero wear.

The original chrome hub caps have been replaced with new ones that polish up really well. The spare wheel and tyre are also included, but need to be deflated to fit into the original storage compartment.

Bodywork

The chassis has been cleaned and painted and remains in good, rust free condition. This was done before my ownership. Please see the "On The Road" video, which starts by showing the underside of the car on a ramp.

The body tub is bolted to the chassis and the car has wooden floors which have been replaced.

Body panels show signs of age with some bubbling and blistering on the roof, sunroof panel, bonnet edges, boot lid and rear lower panel. One boot hinge has been drilled and bolted to the boot lid.

There are blanks on front and rear wings where indicators had been fitted and then removed.

Paint

The paintwork is in good condition with a deep shine, no fading, and all panels matching.

I would guess that it has been resprayed as evidence of materials exists in the old paperwork.

There are some marks of course, as you would expect for a 76 year old car.

Glass and Trim

The glass shows some scratches, particularly the O/S/R drop glass. The windscreen winds out for ventilation and operates correctly. Trims around the glass are mainly original but in good order.

There is a blind on the rear window which still operates.

All chromework is original and has never been re-plated.

Interior

The seats have been recovered in green leather, and I always enjoy the smell when getting in the car

Seats and Carpets

The front and rear seats have been re-upholstered in green leather to original patterns and are in as new condition.

The door trims have been restored with green vinyl and leather inserts to match the seats.

The carpet is black, and is older but in reasonable condition - with some shrinkage but no damage.

Dashboard

The dashboard requires replacing or restoring with new walnut veneer.

The instruments are all working and the centre instrument cluster is veneered but needs restoration.

The speedo and fuel gauge have been repaired and all instruments work. The clock has also been restored but is currently disconnected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is original and in good condition with a collapsible column. The semaphore arm indicators are operating correctly from the centre boss.

The gear stick is original.

Mechanics

The simple mechanics have been augmented with subtle modern improvements.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine and gearbox have been painted in their original colour. There are no obvious oil leaks or engine noise. The engine starts and runs well and benefits from an oil filter upgrade and fitting of an electronic ignition unit.

The carburettor and fuel pump have been overhauled and a modified air cleaner and breather have been fitted. A temperature gauge has been fitted to the radiator. A stainless steel silencer has been fitted.

The gearbox is four speed and changes gear correctly with no grating. First gear is non-synchro and straight cut and is therefore a little noisy when pulling away.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has new bushes and shows no signs of wear.

Brakes have been overhauled with new brake shoes and master cylinder fitted recently.

New rear hub bearings and seals have been fitted and the prop shaft U/Js have been changed.

The vehicle JackAll system leaks, and requires overhaul but is all present.

The Drive

The car drives well, and rack and pinion steering with independent suspension gives a stable ride and positive handling.

There is no smoke or noise on start up and oil pressure quickly registers 50psi.

The engine revs freely and pulls well.

Electrics and Other

The vehicle wiring is in good order and all equipment works as it should.

New horns to complement the vehicle age are available but have not been fitted yet. There is also a new thermostat and hose hit and a new starter switch available.

Some special tools for maintaining rear wheel hubs and radiator cap have been made.

History and Paperwork

The car comes with a full history from the last 30 years and even includes some documentation from its first twenty years of use.

The old logbook shows that the car was exported to Malta and returned to the UK on 7th April,1953. It is given this as a registration date on the logbook. The MG Car Club - Y Type Register have recorded the car as having been built in 1950. The factory kept no records, but the register maintains a list of chassis numbers and manufacture dates.

Owners are then recorded from 1953 to 1972, after which invoices and paperwork suggest the car reappeared in 1996, possibly as a barn find.

A new-style registration document was applied for in April 1999, and, because the DVLA would not have been able to verify information, the car was given 1999 as a registration date and issued a non-transferrable registration number.

There has been servicing and maintenance work completed to keep the car safe, reliable, and useable.
Mot tests were completed until no longer required by law, and old certificates are present.

There is a large quantity of receipts, both from my ownership and the previous owner.
I have a large number of photos from restoration of the interior and other work if wanted.
A reproduction workshop manual is included with the vehicle.

There are older spares and all the parts that were modified have been kept, along with items of original trim.
The sale also includes new horns, a thermostat and hose kit, and a new starter solenoid.

From Trade Classics:
This is a Market Auction listing, meaning we have not visited and photographed the car - instead the seller has supplied the images and written the description. However we’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID that matches the V5, and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPi that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

Viewings are welcomed, so please get in touch with us via the 'contact us' page - we just need to speak to you first on the phone, have you register on the site, and also send in valid photo ID before confirming a suitable time to visit.

Like all our auctions, if there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - the Buyer's Premium is not refundable in any instance, just like a traditional auction house.
