Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consignor

The archetypal British sports car - reliable, fun and timeless - a remarkable car that a great entry to classic motoring.

Originally introduced in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. The B-series engine produces 95bhp at 5400rpm, making it a big step up from its predecessor. Its good looks, honest charm and simple mechanics made it hugely successful and it soon became Britain's best-selling sports car.

This particular example underwent extensive restoration in 1992 at a cost of ~£22,000 and has been stored since 2005, until the current owner, purchased it in January 2023 and had the car recommissioned in June at a cost of just over £2,000. It's now ready to be used and enjoyed for the rest of the summer season.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It might not be concours but it's a wonderful and very usable example, I’m just disappointed that I haven’t had more time to enjoy it.

Roger purchased this car in January 2023 after a long stint in storage, having every intention to recommission the car and spend the summer enjoying it. However due to a recent change in circumstance Roger now needs to commit his time elsewhere and has decided to let his would-be summer car be enjoyed by somebody else.

Roger will be happy to answer any questions you have in the comment section below.

Exterior

Britain's best-selling sports car from the sixties, finished in the iconic red and classic chrome trim.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wheels were supplied new and fitted during the recommissioning work carried out by I.K classics in June of this year, and so present in excellent condition. They were fitted with new tyres all round, meaning there are no issues with either wheels or tyres on this MGB.

Bodywork

Having undergone extensive restoration in the early 90s and having been in storage for the last 18 years, the bodywork on the MGB is in very good condition, with no obvious dings or damage to any of the panels and with no obviously misaligned panels either.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The red paintwork is in good condition, presumably repainted during restoration the paintjob has retained its lustre over the years with only some very minor blemishes to speak of but nothing a good machine polish wouldn’t rectify.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car is in great condition, with no obvious defects, chips, or cracks to speak of. Some of the surrounding rubber trims are beginning to perish, however these would be simple enough to replace.

Interior

Black vinyl seats, matching dash, and contrast red piping, the MGB Roadster's cabin is accommodating, functional, and hard-wearing.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats are in good condition for the age of the vehicle, with little more than age related wear to the vinyl the seats are free from any major rips or tears. Likewise the carpets are well kept with very little wear and no damage to the pile evident in either footwell.

Dashboard

The black vinyl dash is in similar condition to the rest of the interior, with no visible damage to the dashboard. All switchgear is present and in fully working order too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is well kept and shows no major visible damage, the red MG centrepiece is also in good condition. Likewise the gearstick is well presented with no major damage present.

Mechanics

A delight to drive with power a pedal press away, thanks to its 1.8 B-series engine and four speed gearbox with overdrive.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.8L engine provides 95hp and makes the car feel spritely and nimble behind the wheel. During our ‘Cold Start’ video the engine started without issue, after switching the isolator, and performed faultlessly during our ‘On The Road’ video too.

The gearbox also performed well during our time with the vehicle, changing gears smoothly throughout the drive. Benefitting from overdrive, the car can cruise with modern traffic when needed. Only a few miles ago the clutch master cylinder was replaced and during recommissioning the carburetors were rebuilt along with the starter motor, as well as fitting of electric ignition and an aftermarket fan to prevent overheating too.

Suspension and Brakes

With reconditioned brakes, the car stops as expected and had no braking issues on the day. Likewise the suspension is all in good working condition, passing its MOT with flying colours, and providing a good level of ride comfort too.

The Drive

The MG MGB leans more toward the grand touring side of sports cars. More space for luggage was offered and softer suspension gives you a beautiful ride. Combined with the 95hp B-series engine and Overdrive function, the MGB balances comfort and performance well for a car of its size and class. The MGB was successful in many international road competitions, even scoring a Grand Touring category victory in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.

Electrics and Other

All electrical items on the car work as expected, including the aftermarket radio fitted in the cabin. A new battery was fitted in June and this has an isolater so as to prevent battery drain during periods of non use.

History and Paperwork

With a ~£22,000 restoration in its history and over £2,000 worth of recommissioning carried out only last month, this MGB is ready to hit the road for the summer.

This well presented and looked after example of the MG MGB is a usable and ready to drive car, making for the perfect summer car or weekend toy. With paperwork to back up recent recommissioning works and a clean MOT until 23.11.2023, this car comes to market in its prime.

Please note the private registration will not be sold with the car, it will be returned to an age related registration number.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Thank you for the previous response. One more question – one key area not shown in the photos or video is inside the wheel arches, particularly the trumpet sections at the top of the front arches. Could you comment on whether there is any evidence of rot inside the wheel arches?
Thank you.

Hi, do you know when the car was last resprayed?
Also, do you have any records of the work done prior to your ownership? As far as I know, ‘66 cars did not have reversing lights, so it looks as though new rear wings have been fitted.

Hi What was the mileage prior to restoration & was it a genuine mileage. Do you have old MOTs going way back?

The particulars refer to a new battery being fitted; please confirm whether this should read 2 no. 6 volt batteries?
