Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

Few other cars combine classic sporting character with everyday usability.

Created as a pure two-seater roadster in 1962, the MGB was the first MG to embrace the monocoque construction revolution. Bringing the company up to date, along with the new B-Series 1.8-litre twin-carb engines, it was unique in BMC's line-up for having no other badge-engineered equivalent, and soon became the most recognisable MG of all time. Utilising a highly skilled workforce, the Abingdon management used them effectively along a mass production line, which enabled a successful export drive, with most ending up in the States. Throughout its production run, the car attracted strong sales, and even towards the end of its life, it maintained its status as one of the world's best-loved sports cars, continuing to charm new owners to this day.

Its popularity is based on its affordability and practicality, and its ubiquitous nature and commonality often overshadow how cohesive and attractive the styling is. Combined with excellent parts availability, relatively modest maintenance and repair costs, the MGB is not surprisingly the first option for those seeking a fun-to-drive classic sports car.

The MGB underwent subtle changes and upgrades over its 18-year life span, and this late MK 1 version retains many of the original features, including the MGA sourced four-speed gearbox with overdrive transmission, 14" wheels, pull-handle doors and its simple, elegant, uncluttered dashboard layout.

This well-kept 1967 MG MGB Roadster comes from ~12 and a half years with our vendor and has been retained by several long-term owners, finished in 'Old English White' with black leather seats. It has a history file that goes back to the early 1980s. It has also been consistently garaged since 2013, comes with an MOT to May 2026 and in 2018, it featured in an issue of Practical Classic Magazine. It needs minor cosmetic attention and a little engine tune-up to make perfect, but comes off the back of a service just ~350 miles ago.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The MGB is a genuine treat to drive, and looks sensational too!

The owner previously worked in classic car insurance, so he chose the MGB on the strength of its merits and popularity. He bought the car from a friend in 2013 and has used it on a leisurely basis.

In more recent years, the car has seen less use, and an element of guilt is a factor for David to sell - he appreciates that classic cars need to be used, and he’d feel better if the MG finds a new home.

David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

It has a clean presentation with a handful of cosmetic jobs to make good.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14" satin finish wire wheels present well; a deep clean and light refurb would do them justice. The spinners show signs of age.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Falken tyres that show a spec of 165/70 - these are date-coded from 2014. They have plenty of legal tread and even wear.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the MG and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The body is in good shape, with no significant panel dents. Corrosion has started to emerge under the paint along the top seam on the nearside rear wing where it meets the rear light, but we could not spot any other discernible corrosion elsewhere. The shut lines are acceptable, although the passenger door sits proud at the base. All are easy to open and close.

The engine bay appears to be solid, although places where the paint has cracked show surface rust. The floor pan shows a little age under the passenger foot wells, and there is some surface corrosion on the sill lips, but the boot floor, wheel wells and suspension mounts look positive.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The 'Old English White' paint has a consistent coverage and decent shine, with mild age-related swirls caught in the sunlight. David believes that the car underwent a bare metal respray, possibly in the late 1980s, as a part of a historic restoration.

The paintwork has minor blisters and crazing, and a few small touch-ups. The front windscreen valance, engine bay and door wells bear the brunt of the crazing, and most of the blisters are clustered around the nearside rear wing. The car has been stored indoors since 2013, and there are no signs of outdoor elements on the body.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen has wiper scoring but appears to be free of chips. The rubber seals are generally good, with a few signs of age on some sections. The lights and lenses are in good shape.

The chrome is in good original shape, with just mild pitting noted on the grille and a few dents on the side trim, but the headlamp bezels and bumpers look smart. The aerial fitting is a little loose.

Interior

Presented as original spec, the interior has been well looked after.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats with white beading are cleanly presented, showing a little wear on the driver's side bolster.

The carpets are in good shape and dry.

Dashboard

The dashboard is cleanly presented, with decent padding and a good metal facia.

The switches, dials and controls look smart and all are said to operate as they should.

The radio will need to be reconnected.

The door cards and interior trim are in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel appears to be original and shows rim wear.

The wooden gear knob is in decent condition with a good gaiter.

Mechanics

A willing performer with an always enjoyable soundtrack, this MG responded very positively to a long run.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started after a little reluctance. David kept the choke on using the trusted ‘3-peg’ method, and the engine didn’t stall or splutter once it came alive but a few exhaust pops were heard. Otherwise, there were no unwanted noises from the engine as it idled. Once the choke was released and after a 10 minute drive the engine ran smoothly - although a tune up might be the way forward. The engine fired up when warm without issue, and the car was free of unwanted exhaust smoke, except for a light puff upon start-up. The dashboard warning lights all remained off.

The engine is smartly presented, showing evidence of regular maintenance, with good ancillaries, hoses and components. We noticed a little oil on the garage floor, but nothing seeped while we photographed the car.

The car is fitted with an electric fuel pump.

The gearbox and clutch were demonstrated to work without any reported issues, engaging gears smoothly.

The overdrive operates without any lurches.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride was fairly taut, with good control - the shocks have been flagged up as a minor advisory. We didn’t hear any significant mechanical knocks, and the car was free of wayward tendencies as we negotiated the lanes and bends.

The braking is effective, stopping the car with no significant noises or judders.

The Drive

The MG driving experience is one of the many reasons to own one. Aside from its mechanical simplicity and durability, its distinctive engine note and genuinely lively driving characteristics make it an easy option for someone seeking a classic open-top roadster.

The car felt tight along the road, the torquey, responsive engine, and taut suspension adding confidence to the experience. The engine warmed up nicely and pulled well with no hesitancy or unwanted noises. There was the usual cabin creak, and a periodic rattle from the exhaust mounting, but the car felt refined with minimal vibrations at low speeds. David opened the car up on the dual carriageway to demonstrate the overdrive, and a 3-minute blast at 70 mph didn’t flag up any mechanical issues, with the engine temperature and oil pressure remaining stable.

The steering is responsive on the move with minimal play and free of vibrations. The journey with the roof down, and a touch of autumnal air, was glorious and showcased the MGB’s cruising ability, the engine chattering away at a leisurely 40-50 mph. David has not reported any issues with the reliability or trouble with the engine temperature or oil pressure.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrics but David told us everything was functioning as far as he was aware, apart from the radio which is currently disconnected.

The soft top is in good shape both inside and out, with no outstanding flaws or damage. The cradle has a little patina, but lowering and raising the roof is straightforward, and it provides a good, tight seal.

There is a full-length tonneau cover and a few mechanical spares.

History and Paperwork

It comes with a smart binder full of old invoices and MOT certificates going back to the 1980s, but also has the reassurance of a current MOT.

Registered in July 1967 by Appleyard in Leeds, the car started its life in 'British Racing Green'. David remarked that he couldn’t find a single trace of the colour inside or underneath the car, which may suggest it had been stripped down to the bare metal as part of a historical restoration, possibly in the 1980s. The car has MOT certificates going back to 1988, and invoices back to 1981, all contained in a smart book binder.

Since he bought the car in 2013, he has kept on top of the maintenance, with a few invoices outlining mechanical and MOT-focused work. Work on the steering, body, cooling and engine mounts was carried out in 2015. It was last serviced around ~350 miles ago and is MOT and road tax-exempt, but David has taken the wise precaution of MOTing the car regardless, which expires in May 2026. It also comes with its heritage certificate, workshop manuals, a tool kit and an indoor car cover.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi David

What do you mean/suggest by “a little engine tune”?

What minor cosmetic attention does the car need please?

Would the car drive me home from Warwick to Poole?

Thanks

Gerald
