Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Without any doubt, an absolute stalwart when it comes to classic British roadsters.

There are many options out there for the needs of the classic sports car driver, perhaps more exotic, opulent or even faster than the humble MGB, but the raw ingredients of fun with a degree of practicality and straightforward engineering is just a few of the cars enduring attributes. Famously capitalising on its sheer ease of aftermarket service, parts and knowledge, the MGB continues to offer everything one may need in an open-top sports car. Since its first appearance in 1962, its advanced specification and disarmingly good looks have played their part in making the MGB the quintessential everyday sports classic car.

Finished in British Racing Green and wire wheels, this solid 1971 Roadster is well presented and comes with a near-perfect hood and tonneaux cover. Ready to see the open road, it has a good amount of invoices, a very tidy interior and proven reliability.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Both my wife and I owned MGBs in the 1960s, so the temptation was always there!

Recollecting his thoughts of owning an MGB back in the car's heyday, he specifically looked for a chrome bumper Roadster with a British Racing Green finish and wire wheels. The car is used in fair weather, and Mike and his wife embarked on a pre-lockdown 2000+ mile journey to Spain in it without any issues.

Mike appreciates the handling and driving experience of the MG and hopes to replace it with the more powerful MGC Roadster, and so the MGB comes to auction with us. He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in the classic BRG and wire wheels combo, the MGB will always be in demand in Britain.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in good shape with tight spindles, although a sheen of pitting is starting to come through. The matching Michelin tyres are in decent condition, with no notable blemishes but are likely to be over 10 years old. Take a look at the photo gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The car's structure is in good shape, with no outstanding issues noted on the floor pan or suspension hangers. The engine and boot bay are solid. The exterior has a good panel fit, with nothing that suggests anything out of the ordinary - the doors open and close without obstruction. A handful of blemishes are noted on the lowest edges and inner arches of the panel work showing typical exposure to age. The rear wing seams show minor under-paint corrosion. The car is generally free of dents, with what we think is a minor treatable issue spotted on the driver's door.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint coverage has been well applied, with a decent gloss throughout with some signs of age in places. There are a few paint fractures noted on the bonnet, the boot has minor imperfections with the rest of the car shows minor surface marks but the car generally displays well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with no outstanding damage observed and their seals are intact. The chrome work has been well cared for with the odd sign of age on the side trim that you'd expect with the age.

Interior

The cabin has seen plenty of attention and care over the years, smart in presentation and a timeless classic.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather-trimmed seats are in excellent shape, suggesting that they may have seen a refurb in the recent past. They retain healthy firmness. The carpets appear to be in near-new condition, with no blemishes or wear observed. The boot is also lined with carpet and like the cabin fitting and was all dry. The headlining shows no damp marks and the door cards are in good condition too.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good shape, with no significant signs of damage or wear. The facia and centre console are tidy, with some of the controls appearing to be the car's original. All are said to be functional, with the speedometer jumping somewhat at higher speeds.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Mountney steering wheel is a recent item and therefore in good condition. The gearstick is in presentable condition with a little wear, with an excellent gaitor.

Mechanics

Well maintained and proven to be reliable, the MG's sense of fun is abundant.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine presents well, with decent ancillaries and hoses, suggesting that the car has seen a good level of maintenance. The car starts without any issues, idling well with no unwanted noises from the engine, the exhaust is in good condition too.

The owner has pointed out, as to be expected on a car this age, has a little oil seepage but nothing to suggest any issues. The gearbox operates well, with no issues in engaging gears and a well-weighted clutch. The car is fitted with an oil cooler.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides well, with no signs of significant creaking or knocks from the suspension. The dampers hold the road well reinforcing the MG's agile progress around the country lanes. The braking is well within the expectations and stops the car effectively without any vibrations or grinding. The steering is vibration free upon braking.

The Drive

The MG drove extremely well, with the owner telling us that the car has been on an excursion to Spain and back with no drama. The car was taut on the road, and was perfectly happy at higher speeds, with the oil pressure and water temperature well within their expected limits.

The acceleration was smooth, with no popping or hesitation from the engine. No issues were reported with the gearchange. The owner is handy with a spanner and has kept the car in check during his ownership.

Electrics and Other

The hood is in excellent condition, bearing the hallmarks of a car that has been stored in a garage. It raises and lowers easily. The car also comes with a very good tonneaux cover.

History and Paperwork

Owned by several enthusiasts over the decades, it comes with a healthy amount of invoices, presents in great condition and the continental tour in current ownership should help to instil confidence in this car.

Mike has owned the car since 2019, having bought it locally from an enthusiast. The volume of invoices, as well as old MOTs going back to the 1990s, supports that the car has been well looked after and has only acquired 10,000 miles over the last 25 years. The invoices cover a new alternator, new inertia belts, a new hood, a clutch master cylinder and a new exhaust. Recent work includes cooling and heating hose replacements, brake parts and calipers and servicing requirements.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
