Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

A stalwart in the British classic lineup - perky performance, charm and simplicity in one sleek package.

First announced to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the origins. The good looks, honest charm and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be extremely exclusive, but the MGB never fails to provide that authentic classic car experience.

We're pleased to present this particular example, finished in white over black. This MGB was resprayed and features the desirable chrome bumpers with wire wheels every MGB fan dreams of.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always dreamed of owning the MGB Roadster, I've really enjoyed taking it out on weekends, it never fails to put a smile on my face.

The car has been owned, enjoyed, and maintained by Barry since 2018. 10 years ago the car was treated to a bare metal respray and restoration. Barry has had little bits of work carried out here and there to maintain the car mechanics, including four new tyres fitted this July.

You can see the detailed receipts and invoices in the history and paperwork of the car below to see any work carried out in Barry's ownership. Please feel free to ask any questions in the comment section below, and Barry will get back to you shortly.

Exterior

An eye-catching classic, the classic brightwork really helps it stand out on the road today.

Wheels and Tyres

The period-correct chrome wire wheels appear in very good condition and have definitely been given proper attention during the restoration stages. All the wheels are wrapped in Hifly HF201 tyres. They look excellent all-around, with plenty of tread left on as they were replaced this July.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

When assessing the car we noticed the panel gaps look good on this MGB with the shut lines for doors etc all looking great for a 70s classic. With a fresh coat of paint in 2011, we only noticed some very minor corrosion around the headline light edge.

Please take a look at the photo gallery and videos to appreciate the condition of the bodywork.

Paint

The car was subject to a full respray 10 years ago, and it appears in line with the low recorded mileage since then. The finish is of a high standard, with no significant blemishes, other than some minor marks noted around the tonneau cover attachments. There are some minor road use marks elsewhere.

High-resolution images show the paint in detail - please have a look at the exterior media pack.

Glass and Trim

The car is fitted with the desirable chrome bumpers, which appear in very good condition along with the rest of the trim. The only area of wear is a small patch on the rear bumper which has been over polished.

The MG glass appears to be in line with the rest of the car, in great condition throughout. The driver's quarter-light panel hinge is broken and would benefit from being replaced, and a few scratches to the lower bottom right of the windscreen which are not big enough to be noted/fail on an MOT.

The convertible hood is also present and looks in good condition, however, would benefit from a deep detail to bring it back to its best.

Interior

A very smart black leather interior, white pipping, and classic dials to complete the look.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats with white pipping appear to have been refurbished and to this day present very well, without any notable issues. Both seats tip forward revealing a dry and solid rear section of the cabin. The carpets, also recent, look in great condition, with no signs of damp.

The boot is in similar condition with no carpet, but the original full-size spare. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the cabin.

Dashboard

The condition of the original dashboard is in line with the age and mileage and looks very smart. We believe the speedo has been replaced in November 2019.

Detailed images are available for you in the interior media pack below.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A very sporty steering wheel awaits you in this classic MGB.

The 4-speed gearstick is also in place and in line with the rest of the interior. The car's interior presents itself very nicely, along with the exterior.

Mechanics

An easy to work on B-Series block that offers performance and handling on every journey.

Engine and Gearbox

The MGB is powered by a feisty 4 pot, offering ~98BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.9s. Barry reports the engine runs very smoothly, he's always attended to it and carried out maintenance when required.

We filmed a mechanical video during our visit, where we start the car cold, show around the engine bay, and underneath the car - please have a look.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB was much softer than its predecessor with independent front suspension, a much more comfortable ride than the A.

Barry reports that the car drives just as it should with no unusual knocks or noises, and the brakes provide prompt stopping power.

The Drive

A fun and enjoyable sports car, especially when you get the chance to put the roof down. The car offers great handling and performance.

Barry loves to get the car out on the weekends, he mentions it's certainly a head turner and massive conversation starter wherever he travels. He'll be sad to see it go, after many adventures, but will be happy to see it getting the use it deserves.

Electrics and Other

Barry reports that all the electrics are working on the car to the best of his knowledge.

Additionally, the car is fitted with a JVC radio with USB connection for a modern touch.

History and Paperwork

A well maintained MGB Roadster, treated to a fresh lick of paint and top-notch mechanics, this MGB is ready for the new custodian to enjoy.

Owned by Barry since 2018, over that time he has really enjoyed the car, and took great care to maintain its condition since the restoration. It's a great usable classic that's ready to go on many more adventures. Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance, and MOTs, and the photos of the respray.

Barry will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have in the comment section below.
