Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Elegance, simplicity, practicality and for many - the epitome of the classic British GT.

Beginning production in 1962 it's easy to see from its clean lines and sporty looks why production of these cars lasted nearly twenty years - all the way through until 1980. Combined production across these models was over 520k with the MGB GT sitting at the start of this cycle. The GT variant added Pininfarina design elements and arguably launched the sporty, "hatchback" style with its sloping rear window and shapely coupe style.

This very practical MG is a fine example of British motoring history. Still looking superb with its Webasto sunroof - perfectly set up to enjoy the finer weather, the MGB GT makes classic driving as enjoyable as it absolutely should do. It comes to market from ~3 years ownership, and was part of a collection prior, having had an extensive restoration earlier in its life.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A little like a step back in time, this MG is a flash back to my 20s.

Having owned the car for the last 3 years, Nick's love for MG's is still as strong now as it was in his youth, "I owned an almost identical MG when I was younger and getting to drive and own this GT model again was a real dream of mine". He goes on to say "The shape and distinctive exhaust sound is still as I remember it and looking down the bonnet in the driving position brings back so many fond memories of driving out on the road. The driving experience and how exhilarating the ride is all make for a fantastic experience in a classic car".

Nick loves the originality of the MG and has kept the alterations minimal but is making way for a new project to get stuck into, "I would really like for the car to be used more, the MG is in the garage most of the time with the last trip out to a classic car show. I would love to keep it but really I need the space now for my next adventure". He will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Beautiful Pininfarina design elements launched the MGB GT as arguably one of the first examples of 'sporty hatchbacks'.

Wheels and Tyres

Sitting nicely the wire multi spoke wheels look to be in great condition on each side of the car, there were some minor signs of corrosion as you might expect on an older restored car, but nothing that caused a real cause for concern, especially considering that the MG has been largely garaged over its lifetime. We did note that the wire wheels were replacements from a previous owner but still reflect the era of the car itself.

Although not original and a differing size to factory specification, the Neolin Neogreen tyres match on all corners and show a respectable condition of wear. Take a look through the exterior gallery where we show in closer detail the wheels and tyres across the car.

Bodywork

Beautiful panelling and fit across the vehicle. The Webasto full length sunroof runs really smoothly and is an excellent option. On the whole the bodywork looks in great condition too, the only area that looks to have some surface corrosion we spotted was the offside scuttle/under the windscreen area.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the images and videos for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Being nearly fifty years old its remarkable how well the paint still shines in the light, there has likely been some remedial paint work completed but looking over the car on our visit we didn't notice any particular areas of concern or anything major that highlighted as an issue. Paint colour and finish looks consistent across this car, "Teal Blue" a popular and attractive choice.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim reflect the quality of the rest of the car with great looking trim and glass showing no major signs of wear. Some signs of patina show on the chrome bumpers but nothing that caused us particular worry or concern given the age of the MG.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our "Exterior review" video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different angles.

Interior

Having been garaged as part of an avid collection for most of its history, the interior of the MG still remains a truly inviting and comfortable place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Looking fantastic throughout with no rips or tears observed during our visit, the interior and seating is a really comfortable place to be. The rear seats reflect the same as the front sections looking great throughout.

Having mainly been garaged through its life the interior remains dry and well preserved. As part of a previous owners collection this MG has been really well looked after over its history and it shows in the quality seen through the cabin area.

More details of the interior can be found in our image gallery, please head over to take a look through for yourself.

Dashboard

Looking over the car on our interior review we noted the dash presented really well; obviously cared for there were no real issues with splitting or cracking. Overall a really well loved and maintained example of a historic car that remains largely original down to its last detail.

We've covered some more detailed shots of the interior in our hi-resolution gallery, take a look over the images where our aim is to take you through the MG's interior as if you were actually in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We noted the aftermarket steering wheel on the MG which showed well, although not the original, it looked smart with the centre badge displaying nicely set inside the alloy three spoke. Although not the original we were pleased to note that the factory steering wheel is complete with the car for the new owner if they wish to install the initial option.

The gear stick does show signs of usage but given the car is nearing fifty years old nothing that we observed to be a cause for concern.

Mechanics

Powered by the B series engine, the uncomplicated drive and tuneful exhaust notes give the archetypal classic motoring experience.

Engine and Gearbox

On our drive out we didn’t notice any gear issues with the engine working nicely as to be expected. Activating the over-drive switch it worked as it should, we listened in for the revs to drop and heard the noticeable change in the engine to reflect this. Popping the over-drive switch back up brought the revs back in line when out on our journey.

The car comes with the original air filters but is currently running the pancake air filter option. Overall the engine felt smooth whilst driving. Take a look at our "On the Road" video to see the MGB GT start up from cold and Nick taking us out around the local roads.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out Nick took us around some local driving routes, the braking felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. We heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension with the car sounding good.

The Drive

The MG felt comfortable on our test drive, riding with no issues through our journey on the road. Steering felt great on the car with no shakes and there were seamless changes through the gears. The car drove cleanly with no observed juddering or shaking, overall, a really smooth and enjoyable ride.

Electrics and Other

The MG comes with an electronic ignition module which Nick purchased but hasn't fitted. On our test drive we noted that the oil pressure gauge was running up to standard, engine was up to normal running temperature and speedo was working.

The dash was displaying mileage that was reflective of the MOT certificate history and the dials overall were working as they should. Nick let us know that he had noted no issues when using the car in regards to any other electrical elements.

History and Paperwork

With its unmistakeable British motoring heritage, a sheer joy to drive, and presented in good solid condition - the MG is everything a classic car should be.

We've detailed the MOT certificates and servicing detail carried out in the paperwork gallery section. Also included with the MG is an owners workshop manual and 2 sets of keys to the car. Although not currently installed on the car, the MG also has the original steering wheel, and electronic ignition module, along with the original air filters included in the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Barry,
I know that the car does not require an MOT and the last one expired in 2018 but given the outward condition why have you not sought to get one before sale, as a current MoT is reassuring for any prospective buyer is it not?

Best regards
John

Hi Nick, Having owned an earlier roadster MGB which required hardened valve seat replacement, can you confirm that this later model has the necessary lead free seats already fitted please.
Also, any photos of the underside of the car would be appreciated.
Many thanks Barry

Hi Nick, are the chrome over sills hiding anything? Thanks for your time Dave
