Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Finished in a beautiful British Racing Green, a timeless classic that's perfect for the summer.

First released to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the original origins. The good looks, honest charm, and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but the Pininfarina-styled cars still provide that authentic classic car experience.

Coming from 19 years family ownership, this example finished in a traditional British Racing Green is the archetypal classic. With the summer shows and meets about to start, this is a car ready to be acquired and used.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Robin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This car is such a joy to drive around the Shropshire hills whenever I get the chance.

Robin has always wanted an MGB, he found and purchased this green roadster 19 years ago. Robin is having the car MOT'd to ensure the car is good to go for the new owner, along with getting the carbs tuned.

After noticing he's only putting around 200 miles on the car each year he made the decision to auction the car with us. Robin also has a campervan and finds himself travelling with his dog a lot more often in that. He will be more than happy to answer any quesitons you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

An early example of the MGB, featuring Pininfarina-styled bodywork, accentuated with chrome trim.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with period-correct wire wheels on this MGB. The wheels would benefit from a refurb to really elevate the car. All the wheels are wrapped in Falken Sincera tyres dated 2012. They look good all-round, with plenty of tread still left on them.

There is also a full-size spare in the boot with a carpet cover.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this MGB with the shut lines all looking good for a 70s classic.

The car had a minor accident around 5 years ago, the rear nearside wing was replaced and fits flush with the other panels. When getting underneath the car, we did notice some minor signs of surface corrosion, which can be seen in the mechanical photos.

Paint

Finished in a British Racing Green, the paint appears even in coverage and colour across the whole car. The car is ready to be polished and detailed to a high standard which would really elevate the deep lustre the paint has to offer.

You'll notice some small stone chips along the leading edges of the bodywork when you get really close. Please take a look at the exterior videos for a 360° detailed tour of the paintwork on this car.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim along the sides of the car appears in good condition, at the front a little amount of pitting beginning to show on the grille and headlight surrounds.

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks, chips or discolouration, the window rubbers are beginning to show slight signs of age. Robin is also including the tonneau cover within the sale, and the convertible hood looks in excellent condition. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this MGB Roadster.

Interior

A charming MG interior with its original Smiths dials, gauges, and timeless looks.

Seats and Carpets

The seats look really good in this Roadster example, clean throughout with very few signs of wear, the bolsters show a few creases but overall a lovely example.

The carpets and door cards tell a similar story, the car is fitted with nice MG branded rubber mats and look great within this practical classic.

Dashboard

A highly original dashboard can be found within the MGB Roadster, it's in line with its age and mileage and would really benefit from a deep detail and some smartening up in areas.

The car is a usable classic and yet with a little TLC in places would create a fine MGB example. As pictured the armrest glove box is missing its catch, a job for a Sunday afternoon for the new owner. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

We love to see a classic steering wheel with MG badging and gear stick too. The Italian-inspired steering wheel, wrapped in black leather presents in good condition for its age. The gear stick is beginning to show signs of wear. Overall an original example, with lots of character.

Mechanics

The MGB Roadster is a remarkable car that offers trouble-free classic motoring, performance, and handling.

Engine and Gearbox

The MGB is powered by a feisty 4 pot, offering 98BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.9s. We filmed a mechanical video during our visit, where we start the car cold, show around the engine bay, and underneath the car. As mentioned, Robin is getting a fresh MOT actioned on the car, and the engine tuned at the same time.

Please take a look at the video for a closer look at the mechanics of the car in more detail. Robin also mentions the car was fitted with a new radiator recently.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB was much softer than it's predecessor with independent front suspension.

Robin informs us the car drives just as it should and stops on demand too, the brakes recently being tended to, to ensure even performance.

The Drive

Robin loves how this car looks and mentions how head-turning the car is whenever he takes it out. He also loves the drive and handling, mentioning it's responsive and fast when you want it to be.

Electrics and Other

Robin reports all the electrics are working on the car to his knowledge, with the exception of the aftermarket stereo, he prefers the sound of the engine!

History and Paperwork

A nice example of one of the most popular and affordable classics, plenty of power in the little 4 pot.

Owned by the family for the previous 19 years, he's really enjoyed the car over his retirement. It's a great usable classic that's ready to go on many more adventures. Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance, and MOTs.

The car's tonneau cover is included within the sale.

We have actioned our usual checks; Photo ID, V5C, HPi - the car has a Category D marker, this is from the accident that required a new nearside rear wing in June 2016.
