Introduction

Stuart McIntyre
Professional Consigner

The timeless British classic, this MGB has been recently resprayed in a vibrant yellow, just in time for the summer.

First shown to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the origins. The good looks, honest charm, and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but the Pininfarina-styled cars still provide that authentic classic car experience.

This lovely example is coming to sale from Jenny and Paul after 7 years of custodianship, the previous and original owner since 1974 was Paul's sister. During their ownership, they've enjoyed many trips in the car. Coming with service receipts and MOTs this MGB Roadster is ready to be enjoyed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Stuart after meeting Jenny and Paul the owners, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This MGB Roadster has been in the family since '74 and holds many memories. We love getting the car out in the summer and cruising with the roof down.

The car has been in the family since 1974, and owned by Jenny and Paul for last 7 years. In February 1993, the car was fitted with a new gold seal engine and since then has only covered ~17,817 miles. The car has also spent a period of its life out in France.

You can see all the detailed receipts and invoices in the history and paperwork of the car below. Feel free to ask any questions below, and Jenny and Paul will get back to you shortly.

Exterior

An eye-catching and vibrant colour paired with the brightwork really makes this classic stand out on the road.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with period-correct MGB wheels which look great and are free from any major curbing or marks. The tyres on the car look good all-round, with a good amount of tread still left on them.

Please take a look at the exterior photos for an extensive view of the wheels.

Bodywork

When assessing the car we noticed the panel gaps look good on this MGB with the shut lines for doors etc all looking great for a 70s classic.

With a fresh coat of paint in 2021, we didn't notice any corrosion to the exterior of the car, we did spot some minor signs of typical surface rust under the passenger side carpet which can be seen in the interior photos.

Please take a look ate the photo gallery and videos to appreciate the condition of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant classic yellow, the paint appears even in coverage and colour across the whole car following the recent respray.

Please take a look at the exterior videos for a 360° detailed tour of the paintwork on this car.

Glass and Trim

The brightwork, desirable on the MGBs before the switch to the rubber bumpers, appears in great condition. The glass too appears in good condition, with some minor signs of clouding at the bottom of the windscreen. The rubbers are showing signs of age and would benefit from some TLC.

All details are captured in the exterior media pack for your review.

Interior

A classic British roadster interior, finished in a simple and smart black with classic dials and switch gear.

Seats and Carpets

Jenny and Paul have opted for sheepskin covers for the seats, adding to the retro appeal and comfort alike. When we removed these for photos, the faux leather seats showed some signs of age. A tear is present in the driver's seats which a new owner will likely want to retrim.

The carpets are in good condition, clean, and free from any major wear. Please review all the photos and videos in the interior section to assess the condition.

Dashboard

The condition of the original dashboard is in line with the age and mileage and would really benefit from a deep detail and some smartening up in areas.

Detailed images are available for you in the interior media pack below.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original MG steering wheel and gearstick are in place, both in a condition in line with the rest of the interior. The car is a very usable classic but some TLC in places in the interior would bring it up a level as the exterior respray has.

Detailed images are available for you in the inferior media pack below.

Mechanics

The MGB Roadster offers owners that classic experience in performance, and handling, in what is often a simple and easy to work on package.

Engine and Gearbox

The MGB is powered by a feisty 4 pot, offering ~98BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.9s. The engine was replaced in 1993 with a genuine "Gold Seal" engine (a recondition BMC guaranteed engine which was painted gold). This block was replaced around 17,817 miles ago.

We filmed a mechanical video during our visit, where we start the car cold, show around the engine bay, and underneath the car - please have a look.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB was much softer than its predecessor with independent front suspension. Jenny and Paul inform us the car drives just as it should and the brakes have always being tended to when required.

The Drive

A fun and enjoyable sports car, especially when you get the chance to put the roof down. The car offers great handling and performance.

This car means a lot to Jenny and Paul, since being in the family from 1974, therefore they've always given the car the mechanical attention it requires, and recently yearly MOT's even though it is exempt.

Electrics and Other

Jenny and Paul report all the electrics are working on the car to their knowledge.

Additionally, the car is still fitted with a classic Phillips radio from the '70 that isn't working but certainly adds to the retro look.

History and Paperwork

UK RHD, recently resprayed and a BMC gold seal engine fitted ~17,817 miles ago makes this MGB Roadster really stand out in the market.

Long term family owned, Jenny and Paul have really enjoyed the car over their ownership. It's a great usable classic that's ready to go on many more adventures. Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance, and MOTs.

The car's tonneau cover is included within the sale. Jenny and Paul will be more than happy to answer any question you might have in the comment section below.

We have actioned our usual checks; Photo ID, V5C, HPi.
