Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

It has become a British icon in the world of classic cars, and it's easy to see why - smooth, sleek lines create the wonderful MGB Roadster.

The MGB needs little introduction. Immensely popular and widely regarded as Britain’s favourite sports car, the MGB was certainly the most successful. With over half a million made and a production run of 18 years, the MGB has earned its rightful place in British motoring history. Replacing the beautiful MGA in 1962, the MGB was an instant hit, and its following today remains undiminished. There are specialists covering every aspect of the B, so they are easy to look after.

This lovely 1973, well-presented MGB in "British Racing Green", comes with a nice history. The car has had very little use over the past six years, covering just over ~1,300 miles in that time, and it comes to market from ~2.5 years ownership.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Diane the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We've not really used this lovely MGB enough, and so we'd love for a new owner to enjoy it.

The MG is registered to Barry, Diane’s husband, but it is, in fact, Diane who has spent most of the time driving the car, and she has absolutely loved it!

Although she enjoys driving the car, as you can see from the MOT history, it is not being driven very often, which is the reason for the sale of this usable British classic. The family will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Classic looks for a British classic car - like a fine wine, the MGB Roadster has aged beautifully.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the classic chrome wire wheels, these do have some slight tarnishing to the finish and some surface corrosion to the spokes. The tyres are a matching set of Falken Sincera that have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the MG is very good; the panels align well, and there have been new wings, sills, bulkhead panel and work to the floor carried out in 1989. The driver’s door doesn't quite sit flush but may be able to be adjusted to bring it back in line. There are a couple of small blisters just below the windscreen, which haven’t broken through the paint. We did notice some visible corrosion on the bottom edge of some panels too.

The car's underside has been coated in under seal; some of this has flaked off in places, and there is the usual amount of surface corrosion you would find on a car of this age. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in what is thought to be "British Racing Green", the MG was repainted several years ago and has stood the test of time well. There are a few small marks and blemishes, but generally, the car presents very well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition with no chips or damage. There are some age-related light scratches, but nothing excessive. The door window seals have a couple of splits in them. Although not necessary, these are readily available should you wish to replace them.

The headlights are in good condition with no damage to the lenses, and there is a small amount of age-related tarnishing to the chrome. The same can be said for the bumpers, but it is very minor, and a good polish would improve it.

The vinyl roof fits tightly, and there is no damage to point out. The plastic windows are also in good order with no discolouration or excessive creasing.

Interior

Classic looks with a Moto-Lita steering wheel and chrome bezel instruments.

Seats and Carpets

The MG seats are in good condition; they look to have been retrimmed at some point, but both present well with no damage or excessive wear. Both door cards are in good order with no scuffs or tears.

The carpets have a light amount of wear along the sill area caused by getting in and out of the sports car. The MG rubber mats are in good shape with light signs of use. Inside the boot, the boot floor is clean and tidy, and the carpet is in place, which also covers the spare wire wheel. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The top of the dashboard is finished to match the seat and is in good condition. The fascia is finished in satin black; there are some small areas where the paint has chipped off over the years, but this would be relatively easy to repaint on a Sunday afternoon.

The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~63,398 miles. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a three-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel, this has a small amount of wear and a small split in the lower left section. The gear knob also has light wear in keeping with the age of the car.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The MG is great fun to drive, the engine having enough power for the light body, thanks to the 1.8L engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The MG fired up first time on our cold start video, it needed some extra choke to start with but once up to temperature there was no issues reported with the running of the car. Everything appears to be in good order, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay.

The four-speed gearbox operates as it should, and the MG pulls well through the range. There is also overdrive fitted, which is operated via the dash-mounted toggle switch, and this also works correctly.

Suspension and Brakes

The car handles nicely, giving a firm yet reassuring ride as you would expect from a sports car, and there are no noises coming from either corner. The brakes operate well, bringing the MG to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

An enormous amount of fun to own and drive, especially when you get the roof down on a crisp morning. On the road, the car performed very well with healthy oil pressure, it sounded fantastic, and obviously, being an MGB Roadster, it will always turn heads.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear is reported to be working correctly. There is a light amount of wear to the lettering on a couple of the switches. A Goodmans radio cassette player is fitted, and this is on a snatch plate so can be removed.

History and Paperwork

Previous MOT certificates and maintenance invoices provide a well-documented history for the MG.

There are several invoices showing work carried out over the years; one dates back to 1989, when the bodywork was carried out, fitting new wings and sills and work to the floor.

The car is ready to jump in and enjoy; for anyone looking for a British classic, the MGB Roadster is by far the one to go for. There are so many positives that come from owning this classic car. Spares are readily available and there are clubs and events all over the country to meet fellow owners who are all happy to help and share advice. What's not to love about the classic MGB Roadster?

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle - the car has a Category D marker, this is from the accident that required a new nearside rear wing in June 2016.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above. However, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail. This has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything on this listing to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi. Did the car pass its mot? And, has it been written off at any stage?

Am I correct in that the last MOT the car was subject to on 6th December was a fail? Has any work been done on the car recently?
