Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Wonderful - simple, clean and elegant lines, tried and tested mechanics and impeccable road manners made the MGB everything a 60’s sports car should be.

The MGB needs little introduction. Immensely popular and widely regarded as Britain’s favourite sports car the MGB was certainly the most successful. With over half a million made and a production run of 18 years the MGB has earned its rightful place in British motoring history.

Replacing the beautiful MGA in 1962 the MGB was an instant hit and its following today remains undiminished. There are specialists covering every aspect of the B so they are easy to look after. Values are on the up to – the MGB has been a solid, steady market performer for a long time and we see no reason why that trend shouldn’t continue. The epitome of a useable classic, these cars are still enormous fun and easily able to hold their own in modern traffic. They’re not just about B roads and country pubs either – although they are great for that! MGB’s continue to enjoy huge success in historic racing and rallying due to their fantastic handling and the flexibility and tuneability of the ubiquitous B series engine.

This lovely, 1973 model, MGB is presented in magnificent, iconic 70’s, Harvest Gold over a black leather interior. Used regularly and having completed around ~15,000 miles since an extensive restoration in 2007, the car was professionally resprayed and benefitted from new, chrome wire wheels in 2017.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Melissa and Tom the owners, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“It’s such a lovely car. It’s tight, responsive, wonderful to drive and absolutely everyone loves it”

Tom and Melissa have owned this MGB for 15 years. It was love at first sight for Tom; “I had one when I was 18, so I leapt at the chance to buy this one when a friend was selling it - I just love the colour and the way it drives”.

Tom goes on to say “We completely rebuilt the car in 2007 – it was a labour of love and everything was replaced or refurbished. The hood hasn’t been used in 15 years because I never take it out in the rain”. They tell us “We really enjoy taking this MGB out for drives in the beautiful Sussex countryside and, of course, ending up at the pub. Just what it was made for – it’s heart-breaking to let the car go but we are moving abroad so it’s time for another enthusiast to enjoy it” Tom and Melissa will be happy to answer any questions about their MGB in the comments section below.

Exterior

Looking amazing and recognisable anywhere – in gleaming Harvest Gold this MGB transports you straight back to the 70’s

Wheels and Tyres

The Chrome wire wheels, knock off hubs and tyres were replaced new in 2017 and still look amazing. They are clean and we could see no signs of rust, marks or damage. The tyres look excellent and have plenty of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight and we could see no evidence of accident damage or any significant dents or dings. The car had a new bonnet as part of the 2007 restoration and this still presents in good condition. The doors and boot would benefit from some attention to improve the alignment and fit, typical fettling for an MGB of this era.

Paint

Resprayed in 2017 the paintwork still looks great. It’s an original 70’s paint option and suits the car extremely well complimenting the black leather interior.

Overall, the paint job looks very good with only some very minor blemishes. Check out the photos and videos to assess the condition of this charming roadster.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and light lenses all look very good with no significant scratches or marks. Chrome and badging are good with only minor signs of age-related wear. Chrome headlight surrounds would benefit from resecuring.

Interior

The legendary MGB styling extends to the interior, making this a cabin you really want to be in - well laid out, comfortable and purposeful.

Seats and Carpets

Seats are in good condition with no rips or tears. Leather seat covers and black carpets were replaced as part of the 2007 restoration and still look great.

The interior is surprisingly spacious, comfortable and has a real period feel about it. Check out the interior videos and photographs – unfortunately you won’t get the wonderful smell from that, but can see all the detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents really well and the Smiths dials, gauges and switches look crisp and sharp and appear undamaged. Tom and Mellisa assure us everything works exactly as it should. The sellers have pointed out that the glovebox is locked, although they appear to have the keys, they have been unable to open it.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather covered, steering wheel with, period correct, drilled spokes was replaced in 2007 and still looks great. Gear lever, leather gator and chrome bezel all appear in very good condition

Mechanics

Powered by the ubiquitous B series engine with tried and tested drivetrain, this car had a thorough overhaul in 2007.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1,798cc engine delivers a factory specified ~95BHP to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. Modest by todays standards, maybe, but this is a small car and the unit is free revving, responsive and pulls really well.

The car had a new engine fitted back in 1998 and has completed around ~20,000 miles on this unit, in 2007 as part of the major work the head was converted to cope with unleaded fuel. We actioned a start-up video, but the car was not stone cole, you will see from the video that it starts well and displays none of the lumpy idle sometimes associated with these engines. In a 2007 refurbishment, the car also had a new radiator and water pump, exhaust, starter motor, petrol tank lines and pump, engine mounts, clutch and rebuilt carbs.

Suspension and Brakes

With discs on the front and drums on the rear the brakes on these cars are more than adequate for the design. The calipers look very good through the wire wheels and the braking system was renewed during the 2007 rebuild. On the road the car pulls up cleanly and evenly with no judder. The suspension was attended to in 2007 too, new springs all round and the rear suspension overhauled.

The Drive

Well, it’s an MGB! It pulls well, gear changes are clean and precise, roadholding is excellent and the car is well behaved and compliant. All the reasons why this is such a fun classic to own – the straight four sounds fantastic too. Check out the “On The Road” video to share in the brief test drive we took with Tom

Electrics and Other

The electrics on the MGB are pretty straightforward. All switches and lights appear in good condition and Tom assures us everything works as you would expect.

History and Paperwork

A real, ready to enjoy, practical roadster, this MGB comes with a new MOT and lots of history. Affordable, with superb club support and spares availability, just made for the British summertime.

Driving a British classic like the MGB with the hood down will put a smile on your face and will take you back to motoring from a different era. If the B series soundtrack isn't enough consider Slade, Sweet, T-Rex or the Bay City Rollers

This is well looked after classic that’s been extensively and lovingly restored with the paperwork to back it up. As part of a rebuild in 2007 it had a new petrol tank, fuel lines and pump, rebuilt carbs, front and rear springs, clutch - the list goes on and is all detailed in the paperwork. This was followed by a professional respray and other work in 2017. We’ve captured a lot of the history in our paperwork section and it’s well worth taking the time to have a good look through it.

The work that’s been carried out is a credit to Tom and Melissa - it demonstrates careful, diligent and conscientious ownership.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
