Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The MGB is a stalwart when it comes to vintage British sports car, perfect for anyone looking to step into the world of classic cars.

First released to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the original origins. The honest charm, good looks and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, soon becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but the Pininfarina-styled cars still provide that authentic classic car experience.

This lovely example has been cherished by Philip for the past 5 years. Having taken the car as far as he could mechanically and cosmetically, plus also owning another MGB which is in need of restoration. Backdated with all the important parts properly to an earlier chrome bumper look, it's certainly sitting pretty now.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Philip the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have always loved the MGB Roadster, they are a pleasure to drive and so simple to work on, it’s easy to get carried away in the garage for hours!

Philip has owned the MGB for 5 years. He purchased the car from another MG enthusiast, who had owned the car for a number of years but had never really used it. Philip has loved taking the car out with his wife, usually only on sunny weekends, and has enjoyed it immensely.

The reason Philip has decided to part with his British classic, is that he has another MGB which is partially restored. This came from a close friend who sadly passed away, and his promise was to get it finished and enjoy it, which is exactly what he is going to do. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

Pininfarina was given the task to design this British classic, which we're sure you’ll agree was executed with great success.

Wheels and Tyres

The MGB is sitting on steel Rostyle wheels, painted in the original silver/black style. There is some slight surface corrosion and a couple of kerb marks to the rims, but these should quite easily be sanded down and repainted.

The tyres are matching and have a good amount of tread remaining. There is some cracking to the side wall on a couple of the tyres. Please take a look at the gallery for detailed images.

Bodywork

The MGB looks to be in nice condition with no corrosion noted to the exterior of the vehicle. The panel gaps look to align well for the classic two-seater. There has been some work to the rear quarter in the early 80’s, but this is not noticeable and has stood the test of time.

Please take your time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this 70s icon.

Paint

Finished in "Brooklands Green", Philip reports the paint is 85% original, just the paint to the rear quarter repair being the exception. The finish is very good indeed, with just a few small age related marks, as you would expect for the age of the vehicle.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing off the wonderful lines of the MGB Roadster at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car looks to be in excellent condition along with all the window rubbers, and there are no noticeable scratches to mention.

The chromework on the car is also in very good order. There is some very slight tarnishing in places, but this is minimal. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

The roof is in good condition and has been replaced prior to Philip owning the MGB. It fits well and it is nice and tight when closed.

Interior

Tan and cream was the order of the day when this 1976 MGB Roadster was born.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in tan vinyl which are believed to be the originals and are in very good condition, with no obvious signs of any wear. The door cards are finished in cream, adding some light inside the cabin, and these are also in very good order.

The black carpets are in nice condition throughout with no excessive wear to them. Inside the boot is matching black carpet, with the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace present. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in black and shows no signs of any cracking to the top. The fascia has been painted in black, and there has been some paint which has come off and touched in, but it is well presented.

The instruments are reported to be working as they should. The odometer is showing a reading of ~81,579 miles, which tallies up with the MOT history.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three spoke steering wheel is in good condition, with no obvious signs of wear to the rim. The gear knob shows 1-4 and is also in good condition. It’s also worth mentioning here that the overdrive is located on the indicator stalk.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

The 1800 MG engine is the perfect choice for either spirited driving or a more slow sedate pace.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1800 fires up as it should, with a little choke needed for the cold weather and engine. Within a minute or so, the choke can come off and the engine ticks over just as it should, with no untoward noises coming from the engine.

Fitted with a 4-speed manual gearbox, and, as mentioned, the overdrive is activated via the indicator stalk. The change is smooth and the gears select with ease, which can be seen in our "On The Road" video.

Suspension and Brakes

Looking to sit as it should, the MGB is firm but also smooth over uneven ground, and there are no noises coming from either corner of the car.

The brakes are reported to be working as they should, bringing the car to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

There’s nothing that Philip and his wife love more than dropping the roof down and heading off for a drive out into the countryside. The MGB Roadster turns heads wherever it goes, and is never too far away from a pleasing compliment from a casual passer by.

Electrics and Other

The switch gear is reported to be working as it should. A Goodmans CD head-unit is fitted, which is connected to two speakers behind the seats. Everything is reported to be working as it should and the switchgear all looks to be in good order.

Please see the high quality images for the interior of the MGB Roadster.

History and Paperwork

Enthusiast owned by Philip and the MG’s previous keepers, as can be seen from the history which has travelled with the MG.

Philip has really enjoyed tinkering with his MG over the past 5 years. He has given the underside a light restoration to tackle any areas of concern by cleaning off the relevant areas before future-proofing and re-undersealing the whole floor.

The mechanical side has not been left untouched, with regular servicing and maintenance, meaning that the MG fires up on the button and drives as it should. Backdated with all the important parts properly to an earlier chrome bumper look, it's certainly sitting pretty now.

The last work carried out was in February 2021, when it received a clutch slave cylinder, fuel pump, filter and service. There is some extensive history with the car dating back to the early 2000’s, and MOT certificates dating back to the late 1980’s.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
