Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The charming and best selling British sports classic, resprayed in vibrant red - just in time for summer shows.

The MG MGB first came about in 1962 and was produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced 98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from its origins. The good looks, honest charm, and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, shortly becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. Not only are these cars incredibly fun to drive, they look great with their sleek and attractive body lines.

To meet impact regulations in 1974 the chrome bumper over-riders were replaced with oversized rubber ones, nicknamed "Sabrinas" a steel-reinforced black rubber that gave major restyling to the MGB's nose.

This MGB has been in the hands of toolmaker Cyril for the past 4 years, he's carried out a restoration of the exterior and tidied up the engine bay of this lovely low mileage example.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Cyril the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Cyril's owned several different variants of the MGB over his life, he loves tinkering and restoring them back to their former charm.

While on the search for a classic car to enjoy and work on during his retirement, Cyril, stumbled upon this example. Knowing how popular the car was he knew there would be no shortage of parts and with his previous engineering experience; he got to work.

Cyril has carried out most of the work himself over his 4 years of ownership, he had the car resprayed by his son, a professional panel beater.

Due to lack of use, and carrying out the restoration, Cyril has decided to bring the car to auction to find a new custodian, someone who will enjoy the car as much as he has. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Not only are these cars incredibly fun to drive they look great, especially in a bright colour and vibrant colour - like this one.

Wheels and Tyres

This MGB is fitted with uprated V8 styled wheels. The wheels look in great condition all round, refurbished to a very high standard. All the wheels are wrapped in Falken Sincera, dated 2016. They look good all-around, with a good amount of tread still left on them.

Please take a look at the exterior photos for an extensive view of the wheels. Cyril reports the original steels are still present if the new custodian would prefer the original set.

Bodywork

When assessing the car we noticed the panel gaps look good on this MGB with the shut lines for doors etc all looking great for a late '70s classic.

With a fresh coat of paint in 2020 and recent restoration, we didn't notice any corrosion to the exterior of the car - we did spot some very minor chips which have been touched up and can be seen in the interior photos. We also noticed a slight indentation to the right side of the Sabrinas bumper.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in vibrant Red the colour of the car looks great on this iconic MGB. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout. Cyril reports his son resprayed the car for him in 2020. There was a slight mark made to the front nearside wing while reinstalling the engine.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the mileage. We didn't notice any discolouration during our visit. The window seals look good too and are in line with the rest of the condition of the car. The steel-reinforced black rubber or "Sabrinas" appears in great unfaded condition.

During the restoration, Cyril has also fitted a new Mohair roof, which presented in great condition on our visit.

Interior

This MGB has retained its original interior with sporty red piping and classic controls.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats look good in this roadster, clean throughout with little sign of wear - the bolsters show a few creases but overall a lovely example in line with the age and mileage of the car.

The condition of these carpets look good, along with the door cards - take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the cabin.

Dashboard

Cyril was tempted to fit a wood veneer dash, however, decided to leave the interior original to retain the character of the car.

The dashboard is in line with the age and mileage and would benefit from a deep detail.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Great to see the original MG steering wheel with MG badging and gear stick too. The black rubber and metal steering wheel presents in good condition for its age.

The gear stick tells a similar story.

Mechanics

Offering passengers a authentic classic wind-through-hair motoring experience with a great blend of performance and handling.

Engine and Gearbox

The MGB is powered by a feisty 1.8L 4 pot, offering ~98BHP and a 0-60 time of 10.9s. The engine was replaced in 1991 with a genuine "Gold Seal" engine (a recondition BMC guaranteed engine) by M.G. Centre Cardiff.

We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view around the engine bay. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the clean mechanics.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB Roadster was much softer than the previous MGA offering a much smoother ride. British Layland also raised the car's suspension by 1 inch to meet headlight height restrictions.

It looks like the running gear has been well maintained, with no significant issues to be reported - please take a look through the extensive pictures underneath to see the components in detail.

The Drive

Even though some purists are not a fan of the increased ride height, the MGB continued to sell very well with the safety modifications and 1977 saw the cars highest ever year of production.

The MGB offers the perfect blend of speed, handling, and power. Cyril mentions the car always draws positive attention whenever he ventures out in it.

Electrics and Other

Cyril reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car, including the clock.

History and Paperwork

Recently resprayed in vibrant red and restored to a high standard, this is the practical classic you need for summer trips.

A lovely low mileage MGB example that has survived from corrosion and been restored to a high standard by Cyril and the previous owners. The car is coming to auction with ~41,000 miles on the clock, this MG MGB really has been taken care of mechanically since it's been on the road - take a look below to see all the previous service work carried out.

Cyril will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.
