Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Consigner

Britain's best-selling sports car - the MGB offers honest charm and mechanical simplicity.

The MG MGB Roadster was produced between 1962 and 1980 and it was a pure two-seater convertible loved by the masses There are many reasons why the MGB is so popular, perhaps it's the hardy mechanics that still come with performance not to be sniffed at for a classic car like this. Not only are these cars incredibly fun to drive they look great with their sleek and attractive body lines.

To meet impact regulations in 1974 the chrome bumper over-riders were replaced with oversized rubber ones, nicknamed "Sabrinas" a steel-reinforced black rubber that gave major restyling to the MGBs nose.

Sadly this car is subject to a wills and probate sale that is being handled by siblings Lance and Helen who are selling the vehicle.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Tom after visiting and photographing the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Arthur was one meticulous owner who really enjoyed driving his MG MGB Roadster.

As mentioned in the introduction, sadly this is a wills and probate sale - the owner was Arthur that bought the car back in 2010.

The car is now being stored at the family home, siblings Helen and Lance are dealing with the sale.

This MGB was Arthur's pride and joy and he really loved getting the car out for holidays with the family.

Exterior

It's good looks and honest charm made it a huge success in its heyday and an ever-popular classic today.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with MG silver Rostyle wheels with black painted inserts, which gives the car a rather sporty appeal.

The tyres wrapping the Rostyles are period-correct Michelin MX - they are showing signs of age in the form of cracks on the side walls.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of this car.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this MGB with the shut lines all looking okay for a '70s classic.

The driver's door appears a little prouder, which would benefit from some fettling. When getting underneath the car we did notice some minor signs of surface corrosion around the arches, which can be seen in the mechanical photos.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant red, the paint appears even in coverage and colour across the whole car. The car is ready to be polished and detailed to a high standard which would really elevate the deep lustre the paint has to offer.

The black front rubber bumpers feature some minor stone chips.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim along the sides of the car appears in good condition - the trim surrounding the front windscreen appears to have some minor scratches.

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks, chips, or discolouration, along with the window rubbers.

The convertible hood looks in good condition and it shows signs of being repaired in areas over its lifetime. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this MGB Roadster.

Interior

A charming and characterful interior that features timeless good looks and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The seats look in very good condition within this roadster example, clean throughout with very little signs of wear.

The carpets and door cards tell a similar story and the car is fitted with MG branded rubber mats which maintain and upkeep this popular sports car.

Dashboard

A highly original dashboard is present and it looks to be in line with its age and mileage.

The dials, controls, clock, and switches are in good condition, and all are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in excellent condition on this example with no issues with wear, along with the gear stick.

We love the sporty look of the aluminium against black leather steering wheel - please take a look at the images for a closer view.

Mechanics

The MGB offers brisk power and torque from the B-series pushrod engine to offset the extra weight of the new structure.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the 1.8L B-Series inline 4 combined with the 4-speed manual, this MGB has the potential to sweep you down any road very swiftly.

Please watch the video to see the car starting from cold - it just took a few moments to clear itself but then settled well and went up to temperature promptly.

The gearbox is said to function well, with no issues with gear change.

Please take a look at the video for a closer look at the mechanics of the car in more detail.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension in the MGB Roadster was much softer than the previous MGA offering a much smoother ride. British Layland also raised the car's suspension by 1 inch to meet headlight height restrictions.

It looks like the running gear has been well maintained, with no significant issues to be reported - please take a look through the extensive pictures underneath to see the components in detail.

The Drive

The archetypal British sports car, offering great handling and performance.

Even though some purists are not a fan of the increased ride height, the MGB continued to sell very well with the safety modifications and 1977 saw the cars highest ever year of production.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics are reported to be working on the car to Lance's knowledge.

The car is fitted with an aftermarket Panasonic radio.

History and Paperwork

Finished in a vibrant red, and with great accessibility to parts means this is the practical classic you've been looking for.

This roadster comes with hundreds of pages of paperwork, mostly in the form of receipts for parts and work carried out by Arthur himself.

With the previous work actioned together with a little TLC in areas, this reliable car is ready to be enjoyed this summer.

Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance and MOTs.

We've actioned our usual HPi check and seen a copy of the death certificate. The car has the V5 present, the current ownership removed after the DVLA were notified of Arthur's passing.

Also what’s happened to the car between 2012 and now? I appreciate the car would have not needed MOT after 2017 but there are no records between 2012 and 2017 or service receipts.
Will you agree to put the car through an MOT with a Pass, before collecting the car?
Thank you

Hi. Sorry for your loss.
Regarding the car, there seem to be big amount of rust under the driver door and front driver side wing. The driver door seem to be a different colour too.

Is this a photographic issue or am I correct.
Thank you
