Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The MG B remains one of Britain’s most recognisable and usable classic sports cars, offering simple mechanicals, timeless styling and a driving experience that still feels engaging nearly fifty years on.

This 1977 Roadster presents particularly well in its striking 'Orange Red' finish and benefits from long-term ownership, having been with its current keeper since 2011.

Having undergone restoration and a respray around a decade ago, the car still presents strongly today, retaining a very honest and usable feel throughout.

With its manual gearbox and classic open-top layout, this MG B captures exactly what makes these cars so appealing, uncomplicated, analogue motoring with genuine character.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've loved owning the MG but it's time for it to go a new owner that will use it more.

Anthony purchased the MG B in 2011 and has enjoyed the car for a number of years, using it as a classic weekend and summer cruiser. During his ownership the car has been maintained and improved where needed, including retrimmed seats, replacement roof material and maintenance work such as replacing the water pump.

The car is now being offered for sale simply because it is no longer seeing regular use, with Anthony explaining that the car has spent much of the last year stood unused.

As a result, Anthony feels it is time for the MG to move on to an enthusiast who will use and enjoy it more regularly.

Anthony will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in striking Orange Red and paired with classic MG styling cues throughout, the car has plenty of presence while retaining the charming character expected of a well-used British sports car.

Wheels and Tyres

The MG sits on classic-style MG wheels which suit the car well and complement its period appearance nicely.

The tyres appear to present well overall, while the owner notes the wheels would benefit from a light refurbishment to bring them fully back to their best cosmetically.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

This MG B Roadster still presents as a very attractive and honest example today. The bodywork presents well overall following restoration work completed around ten years ago. The panels appear straight and the car retains a clean and attractive stance from all angles. The panels remain in good condition, with the car still showing nicely today.

The front grille does feature some visible dents, while the chrome trim on the passenger side has a few small imperfections. Aside from this, the trim and exterior brightwork present well overall.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in 'Orange Red', the MG has plenty of visual presence and suits the shape of the Roadster particularly well. The older respray still presents strongly with a good shine throughout and a very period-correct appearance. While there are a handful of smaller cosmetic imperfections noted, the overall presentation remains strong and highly usable.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The lights, lenses and exterior trim all present well overall, with the majority of the chrome and brightwork remaining in pleasing condition.

There are some minor dings to the passenger-side chrome trim and slight imperfections around the front grille area, though overall the car retains a tidy and attractive appearance.

The replacement roof material also remains in good usable condition.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

The cabin retains the classic and uncomplicated layout that makes the MG B such an enjoyable period sports car to sit in.

Seats and Carpets

The black interior features retrimmed seats with red piping, giving the cabin a slightly sportier appearance while still remaining sympathetic to the period feel of the car. The seats present well overall and remain comfortable and supportive.

The carpets would benefit from refitting and a thorough clean in places, though all major interior components remain present and usable.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

Finished in black with red piping, the interior has a distinctly vintage feel while benefiting from some tasteful improvements during ownership.

The dashboard remains original in style and layout, retaining the classic MG switchgear and instrumentation.

The dashboard top would benefit from being re-stuck in areas, though the gauges and controls remain functional and retain a pleasingly classic appearance.

Anthony assured us at the time of the visit everything is in working order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A wood-rimmed steering wheel adds nicely to the cabin atmosphere and suits the character of the car very well.

The manual gear lever presents honestly and the owner reports the gearbox operates as it should, with the gearbox also having overdrive.

Mechanics

Powered by its original 1.8-litre engine and paired with the factory manual gearbox, this MGB Roadster offers the simple and engaging driving experience these British sports cars are known for.

Engine and Gearbox

Power comes from the original 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with the original manual gearbox. The owner reports that both the engine and gearbox perform well overall, with the gearbox operating correctly through the gears.

The engine starts and runs well, although there is reportedly a slight hesitation at idle. During ownership the water pump has been replaced as part of routine maintenance.

The car has clearly been maintained and enjoyed over the years, with mechanical work including a replacement water pump carried out during ownership. While the car has spent the last year largely unused, it remains running and driving, presenting an honest example with plenty of classic charm.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is reported to function well overall, with the owner describing the ride as slightly bumpy, something very much in keeping with the character of these classic MGs.

The brakes are currently somewhat hard, which Anthony attributes to the car having stood unused for around a year. A period of regular use or light recommissioning may improve this.

The Drive

This MGB Roadster appears to offer exactly the kind of classic British sports car experience enthusiasts look for, light, simple and engaging.

With its open-top layout, manual gearbox and rev-happy four-cylinder engine, it remains a highly usable classic that can be enjoyed on sunny weekend drives, local shows and countryside runs alike.

Electrics and Other

Anthony reports that all electrics are functioning correctly, with the switches, lights and gauges operating as intended, to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

The MGB benefits from restoration work and a respray completed around ten years ago, alongside interior improvements including re-trimmed seats and replacement roof material.

This MG B has been owned by Anthony since 2011 and has clearly been cared for during that time. The car presents as an honest and well-kept usable classic with long-term ownership behind it, while there is no paperwork to go with the car apart from the V5 and some MOT certificates.

There are a handful of smaller cosmetic and recommissioning items noted by the owner, including minor trim imperfections, wheel refurbishment, carpet refitting and slightly hard brakes from storage.

The MG remains an attractive and appealing classic overall with plenty of character and strong road presence.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
