Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

An icon in its own right - the MGB Roadster is a true British classic and will remain as such for years to come.

First released to the world in 1962 and produced until 1980, the soft-top sports car formula of the MGB stayed relatively simple throughout. A B-series engine produced ~98BHP at 5400RPM, a big step up from the original origins. The honest charm, good looks, and simple mechanics made it hugely successful, soon becoming Britain's best-selling sports car. With an estimated 23,000 still on UK roads, they may not be particularly exclusive, but they still provide that authentic classic car experience.

Peter has cherished this lovely example for the past 29 years, just 1 former owner before him. He is a true enthusiast who has enjoyed just shy of 30 years with the MG, which would continue if he wasn’t losing his storage area. Finished in an ever popular red over black colour combination, and backdated with the desirable chrome bumper look, it presents as a great way in to classic ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had some fantastic times in my friend's MGB during my 20s, when I saw this, I knew it would be the perfect summer car.

Peter has owned this MGB Roadster for nearly 30 years; “Reminiscing about my 20s made me purchase the MGB Roadster, when I spotted this for sale, I just had to have it”. He goes on to tell us “It's such a fantastic car to drive, especially with the roof down in the summer months. This was when the car was used the most it gives an incredible feeling of freedom cruising along the coastline”. In his ownership, he hasn't had to do any major work over and above maintenance, and as such this car presents as a very honest example of the model.

Unfortunately, due to storage issues, twenty nine years later, Peter has decided to part with his beloved MGB Roadster and let what will be the third custodian enjoy it as much as he has. Please feel free to ask Peter any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Wire wheels, chrome trim and a two-seater, could you really want anything else from a British classic!

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are finished in silver and look in good order, with just a slight amount of surface rust at the base of the spokes. Chrome knock-offs on each corner look in good order too.

The tyres are matching Dunlop SP7 and have a good amount of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Looking around the MG, the panel gaps are ok, but there is some room improvement on the doors and bonnet as can be seen. From a corrosion perspective, we didn't spot anything on the bodywork, and the underside looks ok too with just some surface marks showing.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a similar shade to "Pillar Box" red, the MG does appear to have had a coat of paint at some point in its life, as there is quite an amount of micro blistering which has emerged over the years. There is the odd age-related chip and scratch, as you would expect, it's an honest car that could be driven as is but really would benefit from a respray.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no noticeable scratches spotted. The window seals appear to be in good order, and the chrome window surrounds are free from excessive tarnishing. The bumpers are also in the same condition, with some very light age related scratches. The grille is straight and has a bright finish with no damage. The headlights are free from chips or splits, as are the spotlights, indicators and rear light lenses.

The roof is in good condition. There are a couple of small holes in the rear window, but fear not, there is a new roof included with the sale, ready to be fitted.

Interior

It’s a lovely place to be - the necessary gauges give you all the information you need without any modern interference, as they say, less is more.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in black leather with red piping, the seats are considered to be the originals, although we haven't seen this design before. There is some slight patina, but they are in very good condition for the vehicle's year.

The carpets are in good condition with some light wear in places, in keeping with the age of the MG. Inside the boot area, the spare wheel is present and matches the others. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition with no apparent damage to the surface. The instruments are the original Smiths items that look to be in good order. There is a small amount of tarnishing around some of the bezels, but these are said to be working correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of ~4,791 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a leather Mountney three-spoke steering wheel, this is in good condition with minimal wear. The gearknob has an MG logo on the top and is in good order with no splits seen.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

Reliable, easy to work on and spritely enough to keep up with modern traffic - the B-series 1800cc is a fantastic engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1800cc fires up nicely and takes just a few seconds to clear its throat through the twin SU carburettors. Peter has mainly maintained the MG, carrying out regular oil changes and services, no major work required in his ownership.

The gearbox is a four-speed with overdrive operated via a dash-mounted switch. The change is smooth, and the car pulls well through the gears with no untoward noises from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the ride in the MGB is nice and smooth, with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the vehicle. Peter reports that the MG comes to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

It’s a fun two-seater ready to be enjoyed! Drop the roof down in the summer months or on a crisp autumn morning for the ultimate two-seater experience. Being out in the MG, it handles well and is surprisingly smooth for a classic sports car.

Electrics and Other

Inside the MG, there aren’t many electrics to get bogged down with and cause issues. What switchgear is there is in good condition with minimal wear and reported to be working correctly.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

Although it’s been enthusiast owned, just ~369 miles have been covered in the past 17 years, but still, it has seen servicing and taken for an MOT.

The bonus of buying a car owned by an enthusiast is that you can usually ask anything about the vehicle, and the owner will know the answer, especially for a car that has been with the vendor for 29 years, so feel free should you wish to ask any questions. In addition, there is a nice selection of invoices for parts purchased over the years. Especially the one in 2018, which came in at ~£1378. And let us not forget Peter is including a new hood.

The V5 is present and shows just one previous keeper. The previous MOT expired in November 2019. Although an MOT test is not needed, Peter feels it would easily pass a new test.

An excellent opportunity to become just the third owner of the 1979 MGB Roadster. It’s a usable classic, perfectly suited to the British countryside or coastal roads with the roof dropped; you too can experience the sense of freedom Peter experienced when driving the British classic.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

On the video it looks like the paint work has micro blister faults on it, does it? Or was it just water/rain, its hard to tell. Thanks.
