Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The square jaw gave a more sophisticated look to the classic Mini.

Taking the original rounded Alec Issigonis design, the Mini Clubman was introduced with a longer front end and flatter grille, giving a more conventional look that aligned with the styling of the early 1970s.

Changing the interior layout, the Clubman instruments were moved in front of the driver rather than the centre; this improved visibility of the instruments and gave a more modern feel when behind the wheel.

Available with a 998cc or 1098cc A-Series engine, both offer modest performance and excellent fuel efficiency and, thanks to the low weight, the Mini is great fun to drive.

This 1973 Clubman has been owned by Lee for the past three years, he purchased the car to save it from deteriorating any further, carried out the necessary bodywork and gave it a mechanical recommissioning.

A great opportunity to get behind the wheel of an iconic British classic at entry level money.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Lee the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Lee purchased the Mini after spotting it sitting in a farmer’s barn.

Rescued from a farmer’s barn, the Mini had been sat for some time, looking rather sorry for itself.

As a fabricator and welder, Lee knew this was something he could tackle and resurrect the classic Mini from its current state into a usable car which could be enjoyed.

This was three years ago and, since completion, it has been used mainly by his dad, taking it to classic car shows and events.

Now time for a change, the 1973 Austin Mini Clubman is up for grabs and looking to be enjoyed by another enthusiast owner.

Lee will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Quite possibly one of the most recognisable British cars ever made.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are covered with what’s believed to be the original chrome hubcaps, which are in good condition with a bright finish.

All the tyres have been replaced and have only covered a few hundred miles, so therefore have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

Looking around the Mini, there are no obvious dings or dents to point out.

There are a couple of small blisters in places and some minor areas of corrosion under the paint, but nothing which has broken through.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Repainted in the original colour of 'Harvest Gold', the Mini presents well all over. The car has been repainted in 2K paint for a more durable finish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows in the Mini appear to be original and look in good condition, with just a few light age-related marks as you would expect. The seals look in good condition, with no signs of perishing.

The headlights and rear lights are in good order, with no damage to the lenses, and the chrome bumpers have a bright finish with just some light tarnishing to them.

Interior

A colour-matched interior to the exterior is very 70s.

Seats and Carpets

The vinyl seats are finished in a similar colour to the exterior. The driver's seat does have a split across the back edge of the seat base, and the rear seat appears to have faded a little with age. However, there are plenty of specialists around the country who would be able to supply replacements or repair.

The carpet is a thick underlay which has been cut and fitted in place - this is in good condition and no doubt adds some soundproofing.

Dashboard

The dashboard is as you would expect for a Mini of this age… minimal.

The instruments are working correctly and the odometer shows ~61,580 miles at the time of our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is fitted, and this is covered in a soft-grip vinyl, all the rage in the 70s.

The gearknob is also in good order, with just light signs of age.

Mechanics

A 998cc A-Series engine offers reliability and makes driving the Mini a pleasure.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is believed to be the original and, aside from some recommissioning work when Lee got the car, the engine runs lovely with no issues reported.

Fitted with a four-speed gearbox, the gears are easily selected and the car pulls well through them all.

Suspension and Brakes

Sitting as it should, the Mini handles as you would expect, with no untoward noises coming from either corner of the car.

The braking system had an overhaul when the restoration work was carried out and, more recently (the day before we arrived to photograph it), a new brake cylinder was fitted.

The Mini comes to a stop in a straight line with no problems mentioned.

The Drive

How much fun can you have in a small car? Lots! Nimble handling, light steering, perfect for tight city streets or winding roads; the compact size and raw feel give you a great connection to the road. Its modest 998cc engine won’t break any land speed records, yet it still feels very lively and engaging, just how a Mini should feel, and does everything it needs to be enjoyable.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the Mini is pretty much as simple as you can get. The main things like the lights and wipers work as they should; the only thing mentioned is the radio doesn’t work, but it hasn’t been looked into.

History and Paperwork

Spending several years unused has resulted in a lack of paperwork.

There isn’t any paperwork with the Mini apart from the V5C. Lee did try to get some from the previous keeper, but this was unsuccessful as the former keeper couldn’t find any.

It's a drivers' example as it starts, drives well, looks great and is ready to be enjoyed - so with regards to some ageing invoices from years ago, it doesn’t really matter and is factored into the reserve. Just jump in and enjoy this usable British classic and take it to some local shows.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off and does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
