Introduction

Tom Brett
Content Editor

Around 2000 were sold to the UK market in collaboration with the famous Mary Quant.

In 1988, Quant designed the interior of the Mini for a limited edition version. It features black-and-white striped seats with red trimming. The seatbelts are red, and the driving and passenger seats had Quant's signature on the upper left quadrant. The steering-wheel had Quant's signature daisy, and the bonnet badge had "Mary Quant" written over the signature name. The headlight housings, wheel arches, door handles and bumpers were all "nimbus grey", rather than the more common chrome or black finishes.

The Mini looks to be in immaculate condition and we cannot wait to find it a new loving owner.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dee, the owner's daughter, having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After owning for 20 years I will be really sad to see the 'Mary Quant' go.

Ruth has owned this stunning Mini for the past 20 years and has been such a good owner to this little car. The Mini has featured in a BBC programme in 2010, a number of high profile magazine articles, as well as winning many concours shows across the country, claiming first trophies along the way.

She ran the car as a daily driver during the first few years of ownership before really getting to work with this example by commissioning a number of cosmetic repairs, as well as a full engine rebuild. Wait till you get to the paperwork gallery - hundreds of documents for the new owner to enjoy.

Exterior

As always, the Mini makes heads turn - particularly the 'Mary Quant'.

Wheels and Tyres

All looking in excellent condition and likely to be the original wheels that came on the white version of the 'Mary Quant'.

Having covered minimal mileage recently, the tyres still maintain an excellent tread all round. As you look in and around the wheels you notice how rust-free this example is in the usual weak spots. Ruth has kept on top of the wheels having had them balanced and refitted in 2009.

Bodywork

Upon inspection of the photos and videos, this example does look really good.

Dee, the owner's daughter, assures us the car has been stored correctly to avoid any rust. As well as looking great, we saw no dents or bumps across any body panel with all shut lines looking good too.

Paint

The Mini Mary Quant came in two limited edition colours on the UK market; Diamond White and Jet Black. The underside was cleaned and repainted in 2012 along with a touch up of paint to the front and rear bumpers in 2013, please see the invoices.

The Diamond White finish on this example is nothing short of excellent. It looks even in finish across the whole car with no signs of bubbling. The interior paint was also repainted in 2006.

Glass and Trim

All in excellent condition across the car, please review the photos and videos.

As you can see by the invoices, the seals and trim have been maintained.

Interior

The interior designed specifically for the Mini by Mary Quant really does steal the show.

Seats and Carpets

The black and white striped seats were given red piping, colours that were consistently used by the fashion designer in her works. They are in a fair condition in line with the car's mileage, as the white has been marked slightly since being replaced in 2006. We saw no tears or rips in them and look a joy to be seated in.

All carpets are in excellent condition.

Dashboard

A simple speedometer paired with the fuel and oil temperature gauges next to them are as simple as it gets - both are in good condition in line with the car's age. An aftermarket modern radio has been fitted to the car that works.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 3-spoke steering wheel has Mary Quant's signature daisy situated in the middle. The wheel itself is free from wear and tear, and the stitching is tightly bound.

Mechanics

A complete restoration of the car took place in 2006.

Engine and Gearbox

The Mini 1000 utilises a 1.0L four cylinder engine and we are assured by the seller that there are no issues when starting the car up after a full service was commissioned in July 2020.

With a 4-speed manual gearbox, we are also assured the car changes gear reliably and responsively.

Suspension and Brakes

The underside of the car looks great, free from any significant rust and corrosion - this little Mini looks to be a solid example for any new prospective buyer. Please review all the images and videos to make up your own mind.

The Drive

What else is there to say about driving a Mini around? They're great for those small journeys when you are out to impress.

Heads will turn even further from the unique styling this car possesses over the standard ones.

Electrics and Other

All door seals were repaired and replaced in 2005 along with new headliner. During July 2020, a full service was commissioned in preparation for the sale, providing any new respective owner with the confidence of driving this example away safely.

History and Paperwork

Ruth has owned the car for almost 20 years now and will be sad to see it go.

When looking at the provenance of the car, it is clear to see the passionate and meticulous ownership Ruth has prided herself on. The new owner will be pleased to see folders of history concerning all MOTs, invoices, restorations photos and other such as: articles the car has featured in; photos of Ruth and her Mini winning prizes at various concours shows across the country, and even a personal photo of Mary Quant more recently at an event.

There is also a detailed folder of all the previous V5s concerning the car, describing how long the previous owners had the car for.

Hi!
I had one of these minis as my first ever car until someone drove into me and wrote my car off! I was deverstated and completely heart broken and never got over the loss of the car.
Would I be able to see the car at all before the auction is over?

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling and values are not shown on the listing – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
