Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

One of the most collectable limited editions of the model, Paul Smith put his unique design touches on this already iconic British classic.

Over five million Minis were produced between 1959 and 2000, however, with lots of choice between many different models and editions, each car has its own place in the history. The Paul Smith limited edition was a run of ~1800 examples (with only 300 designated for the home market), this was one of the most distinctive limited-edition Minis ever produced. The car shared the spec of the revered Mini Cooper, powered by a 64BHP 1,275cc fuel-injected engine, Minilite-type alloys, full leather seats, colour-coded wheel arch extensions and mirrors finished in a distinctive purple/blue hue chosen by Paul Smith himself.

This particular example has got to be one of the most original and best-kept available. Considering this is a low mileage example with just ~11,000 miles recorded, it comes with a remarkable service record with the main dealer who sold the car, A E Wilcox & Son Ltd. The car has been stored in a garage its entire life, presents in excellent condition and comes to market from 23 year ownership, the vendor buying the car when it was just 4 months old, the only prior registered keeper being the dealership themselves.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've effectively owned this car since new, and had it looked after by the same Rover garage since it left the showroom in 1999.

Tim, the owner of A E Wilcox and Son Ltd (Main MG Dealer) is bringing this car to auction with us on behalf of Stuart, the owner. Stuart purchased the car from A E Wilcox and Son LTD (MG/Rover main dealer) brand new, and A E Wilcox ordered the car from Clarks. Since then Stuart has covered very little mileage, ~11,000 in fact, and had A E Wilcox MOT test the vehicle every year since it required one in 2002 along with 14 main dealer services, unique for a Paul Smith we think.

When the car was ordered new, there were a number of extras ordered which were as follows; two extra driving lamps (making four on the grill), stainless steel front bumper with over-riders, sump guard, rear window-mounted brake light (there are two 'Paul Smith, stickers on the rear window, rather than one), one extra rear fog light (making two) and the spare tyre is full size. With the car now receiving very little use, Stuart has decided this car needs to go to a new home. He will be more than happy to answer questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The custom blue/purple hue makes this Paul Smith unique and easy identifiable by collectors, it's an iconic Mini.

Wheels and Tyres

The Paul Smith special edition is fitted with charcoal Minilite 12" alloy wheels as standard. Previously you would only find these on the Cooper 35 and Monte Carlo editions. These wheels present in great condition on each corner, with no obvious areas of concern.

Fitted with Infinity LMA9 tyres on the front and Nankang on the rear, all the tyres appear to have a great amount of tread, nothing noted on the MOT. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Paul Smith Mini looks in excellent condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align well for this car. This limited edition Mini saw the addition of body colour wheel arches, mirrors and front fog lights, two additional fog lights have been fitted onto the front (customer order).

During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dinks down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp. Both the doors, boot, and bonnet open and close with ease, and door shuts/sills which are typically problem areas all looked clean and free of issue. The only thing we would point out being really picky is room for a slight improvement/fettling is the gap around the passenger door when shut.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a limited run Paul Smith "Blue", a colour chosen by Sir Paul Smith himself, it is a beautiful colour that has a purple hue in some lights too. As part of the limited edition, he chose hidden "Citrus Green" body parts, a trademark contrast touch, which you'll notice as you open the boot, bonnet and glove box.

The finish on the paint is excellent for what is believed to be the original paint. It is even in colour and finish across all the panels as you'd expect, and there are only a handful of very small stone chips to the front, and a small imperfection in the paint towards the top of the nearside front wing.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look great too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Benefiting from being garage stored all its life, they haven't perished as you see on higher mileage examples.

The car is fitted with a 24-carat gold-plated Paul Smith bonnet badge, and the "Citrus Green" GB badge on the front grill. All the chrome work appears in great condition. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Interior

A luxurious all leather interior with the signature Paul Smith contrast design touches - a really special place to be.

Seats and Carpets

Paul Smith customisation continues within the cabin, this Mini was fitted with black leather seats with matching door cards and pockets. This style was only available on the Paul Smith Mini at the time.

As you would expect for a low mileage example, the interior matches the exterior and appears in excellent condition. You can tell this car has been meticulously cared for over its lifetime. The door cards and carpets present in great condition with no issues noticed, the boot space with the "Citrus Green" covered storage floor. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

Fitted with a body colour dashboard, which was only ever seen again in the Classic Cooper end of line edition. The dashboard in this Mini has no signs of any major damage or scuffs. Magnolia clocks and dials with custom-styled numbers appear on the gauges, you'll also find the Paul Smith signature logo on one of the dials along with its plaque inside the glove box.

No warning lights displayed when we started the car and the odometer showed a reading of 11,651 on our visit. The only thing that could be addressed in the cabin could be the rattling glove box door, which only wants tightening or a bead of foam or rubber to stop the vibration.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear selector are presented in excellent condition and show very few signs of use.

We noticed the slightest signs of wear to the accelerator pedal. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the cabin.

Mechanics

This mini is fitted with the taller final drive ratio, the 1275cc fuel-injected engine with the unique Citrus Green rocker box cover.

Engine and Gearbox

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, Tim operated the gears with ease. Just what you would expect given the service history this car comes with, last serviced in 2021 some ~100 miles ago.

Various parts under the body of this Paul Smith edition were given custom Citrus Green coloured contrast items. These included the rocker cover, HT leads, glovebox, petrol tank and boot board.

Suspension and Brakes

Stuart reports regular maintenance on this example has been carried out throughout his ownership and when required, ensuring that everything works as expected.

Please view the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

An extremely enjoyable, fun, yet refined driving experience is offered in the limited-run Paul Smith Mini. Stuart has thoroughly enjoyed his ownership of the car over the past 23 years.

With its distinctive paint and styling, it's certainly a fashion statement, a favourite amongst Mini enthusiasts and classic car lovers alike.

Electrics and Other

Stuart assures us all the electrics within the car are working as intended. Please take a look at the photographs and videos for a detailed tour around and inside.

History and Paperwork

1 of 1800, low mileage, effectively one owner, and excellent main dealer service history, this car is investment quality we think.

A E Wilcox and Son LTD were the first registered owner of this Mini Paul Smith before Stuart purchased the car back in 1999. Since then Stuart has had the car serviced and MOT'd with A E Wilcox for the previous 23 years. The car has bags of originality from all the important Paul Smith bits. Take a look at the media to see all the genuine service history included within the sale of the car, the last service was carried out last February (100 miles ago) and the car passed mot in March this year.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
