Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Built with bags of charm, the last of the Mini Coopers are the ones to have.

All good things must come to an end, and Rover prepared a series of run-out Mini’s to celebrate the end of an era of one of Britain’s most celebrated motoring icons. In the last few years of production, the factory prepared several limited edition models, including five distinct versions during the very last year of production. Amongst these cars was the Mini Classic Cooper Sport, which utilised the popular Sport pack option as a standard fitting. Distinguishable by its use of platinum Silver roof and bonnet stripes, the significant difference was inside, with a tasteful alloy dashboard, window winders, door pulls and handles. The seats too were also given a colour silver theme, with Nickle silver leather seats with black facings.

This beautifully presented example was first registered in South West London in April 2000, making it one of the earlier limited edition Cooper Sports models. Finished in "British Racing Green", this one was one of the three available colours for this model. Fitted with the optional sports style 13” alloy wheels, its main focus of desirability aside from the excellent overall condition is the factory-fitted electrically operated Webasto sunroof. Furthermore, the car has since been fitted with an upgraded Moulton Smootha-Ride suspension kit and an aftermarket Alpine head unit with iPod connectivity. It comes with an MOT to January 2024, 2 keys, as well as a stack of invoices and previous MOTs, all supporting its low mileage of just 47,892.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Philip the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car is guaranteed to be a smile on anyone's face, and I love it in this colour.

Phillip explained to us that the car was likely to have been bought by several Mini enthusiasts over the years, who have carefully maintained its originality. Unusually for a Mini, he informs us that it has never needed welding, and its spending has revolved around maintenance and upkeep.

As a fan of the original Mini, he bought this car fairly recently, specifically looking for a well-kept limited-run model but has decided that his two existing Minis are enough, and he has decided to place this one for sale. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Beautifully presented, this car has been truly pampered and is arguably the best spec for the Sport.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13" Sport alloy wheels are in excellent condition, with very little in terms of wear or damage to observe.

They are mated up to a set of Yokohama tyres, all are in good shape, with even wear. Take a look at the pictures for the detail.

Bodywork

The underside is solid with no signs of damage under the Lanoguard anti-corrosion treatment. The subframes, floor pan and inner wings all look good too, Philip mentioning that to his knowledge this car has not required any welding. The exterior follows the same positive script, with no signs of significant rust, with the front wings, A-pillars, roof seams and doors all in decent shape.

The car is free from any obvious dents, with flush fitting panels and acceptable door gaps. All doors open and close without issues. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "British Racing Green" paint has a pleasing lustre, with even coverage and colour across all panels. There are odd signs of minor under-paint blemishes, mostly noted on the boot lid. The car is also free from any significant road wear or stone chips.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in very good condition in line with the age and mileage of the car. The standard fittings include a heated rear windscreen and push-out rear windows. The rest of the glass and door seals are intact, and the fittings such as the wheel arches are well-mounted.

The chrome is in decent shape, and the lights and lenses are intact. The front fog light glass show minor signs of age, but otherwise free of damage. The badges and trim decals are intact and correct for this model, giving it that extra special appeal.

Interior

Plushly furnished, the cabin has retained much of its originality and presents very well.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are neatly presented with just a little age-related creasing on the front, with a few marks on the back of the driver's seat.

The carpets and mats are in good shape and all damp-free. Watch the interior review video to see the detail.

Dashboard

The aluminium dashboard displays well and is complemented by a set of intact magnolia instrument gauges. The facia padding, controls and switchgear are all neatly presented, and all are said to function correctly.

The cabin is completely standard, with the exception of the aftermarket fitting of an Alpine head unit with iPod connectivity. The headlining is intact with minor marks in places, the door cards are intact with a little rippling observed on the front items.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black and nickel silver leather-trimmed steering wheel shows just minor signs of age. The aluminium gear knob is original and matches well with the trim across the cabin.

Mechanics

The 1.3-litre fuel injection engines liveliness simply adds to the fun, and sounds great.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is well presented, with ancillaries and hoses looking good, and with evidence of regular attention. The car started up immediately in its secured storage, with no untoward noises coming from the engine.

The stainless steel exhaust sounded healthy, with no blowing or excess smoke. The gearbox is said to engage without any issues, and the owner is also happy with the clutch's biting point. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride is typically firm but free of any knocks or thuds. It was fitted with a Moulton Smootha-Ride suspension kit, which is said to help the comfort and ease of driving.

The brakes are effective, with no reported issues with their performance.

The Drive

The Mini driving experience is all about the fun factor, a genuine go-cart white knuckle ride, yet the Cooper Sport is actually quite a refined little runabout, with our little country drive at urban speeds offering the same thrills one might expect from a faster and more aggressive car.

No unwanted noises were heard over the bumpy road conditions. The steering was free from vibrations, and the car felt tight around those corners. There have been no reports of oil pressure or engine temperature issues.

Electrics and Other

The car has been fitted with the factory option electrically operated Webasto sunroof, which works perfectly without any strains. It is said to be watertight, although the car is not generally used in weather other than dry conditions. The car has been fitted with an aftermarket Alpine headunit as mentioned previously.

History and Paperwork

Over £2,000 has been spent in the last three years, an impressive history file, low miles and recorded owners, along with being beautifully presented make this Cooper Sport a great example.

First registered in April 2000, the car comes with evidence that it has seen plenty of care from its successive owners. Recent spending includes a service, along with a 2022 bill for almost £700, with sundry items and a complete set of front adjustable suspension cones. £1,800 was spent in 2020, which included a new radiator, some renewal and service work on its steering and brakes on top of its servicing. The car appears to have had regular servicing throughout its lifetime, with a previous owner's notes alluding to its early service history, with more recent evidence being shown in the service book.

Other notable maintenance aspects include the installation of a Moulton Smootha Ride suspension kit in 2017 and a repair to the gearbox in 2015, around 1,700 miles ago. The current owner informs us that the car has been kept in careful storage, having covered not much more than ~700 miles over the last ~7 years. It also comes with a batch of previous MOTs, going back to 2003 and a current one to January 2024. The car has retained its original owner's booklets and wallets and comes with two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi How many owners has the car had?

Drahcro

The MOT history highlights corrosion in various areas (seat belt anchorage points /cills) at different times in the past, also damage to seat frames and seat adjustment mechanisms. There is no receipt paperwork etc for remedial work to resolve these issues. The seat frame damage, could this be a result of accident damage ? The MOT history clearly show that this car has not always been cherished by all of it’s previous owners. therefore some explanation is required to explain the discrepancies/ omissions in the description text.
