Introduction
Jacob Boodrie
A rare final flourish of a British motoring legend — the John Cooper LE marks the end of Mini production with unmistakable character and collectability.
The car that sparked the small-car revolution, the Mini remains one of the most influential designs in motoring history. Launched in 1959, it pioneered the transverse front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout that would become the template for generations of compact cars. Its motorsport success only enhanced its legend, particularly under the Cooper name, where its agility and balance made it a giant-killer on rally stages across Europe. After ~41 years of production, the curtain finally fell in 2000 — but not before a fitting finale.
The John Cooper LE represents one of the very last and most desirable iterations of the classic Mini. By the late 1990s, the Mini had evolved considerably, benefiting from meaningful upgrades including a driver’s airbag, seatbelt pre-tensioners, side-impact protection beams, an immobiliser and distributor-less electronic ignition — making these final cars among the most usable and refined examples ever built.
This example is instantly recognisable by its wider arches, 13-inch alloy wheels, lowered stance and distinctive old english white roof and bonnet stripes. Inside, the cabin is elevated with alloy dashboard trim, a leather steering wheel, matching interior details and red leather upholstery; a tasteful blend of heritage and late-era refinement.
Having been in the care of our vendor for ~13 years, this John Cooper LE presents a rare opportunity to acquire a cherished, long-term owned example. It has been garage-stored throughout ownership and has benefited from front discs, callipers and a stainless exhaust. The car is offered a document portfolio and carries a current MOT valid until 21.08.2026.

Hi,
I just wanted to double check how long it was in France for and if there was any paperwork from its time out there. I presume it’s a UK supplied car rather than an import?
if there’s any bubbling in the paintwork
Lastly if there’s any additional paperwork outside of what’s listed. I can’t see any services listed in the 26 years only MOT’s.
Thank you
Hi
The mini was bought by the previous owner in Feb 2004 and by me in Feb 2013 so it was in France for something under 9 years as I’m not sure when they moved there. I don’t have much paperwork for that period but I do have the French reg. plates. Ive used it very little so it hasn’t needed much routine servicing. Ive done it myself. Ive had work done by Somerford mini and Slark tuning. There{s not much rust. Mainly a couple of places in the boot floor.
Hope this helps. All best Barrie
Hi
In the pictures it looks a few different shades of green, would it be fair to say it’s had panels poorly painted that don’t match ?
What are the under silks like for rust ?
What is the rear subframe like for rust ?
Why is their silver take over one of the lights in the dash ?
Has the main binnacle silver dash cracked right through ? How did this happen ?
Thanks
Chris
Hi
I didn’t notice the paintwork differences until a mechanic pointed it out to me. When I bought the car the previous owner told me that it had been scratched by a vandal so I guess she had it partially re sprayed and either it wasn’t a perfect match or it has aged differently to the original.
There is some rust underneath as you would expect from a 26 year old mini but it has never been mentioned in the MOTs. One garage commented that there was some rust in the boot floor but not structural so not a failure.
The duct tape was to cover the airbag light which was on permanently and annoying at the time. Ive never managed to get the airbag system to work though Somerford mini claim that they can sort it.
The binnacle cracking is just from age. I think that you’ve nudged me into trying to find a replacement!
I like the mini. It should not pass mot’s with the Airbag light permanently on though as it is faulty and perhaps cheap or costly to fix. What else are they ignoring at mot time….
Hi Matthew
The airbag light is off now but there is definitely something wrong with the system. I don’t think the mot testers have been lenient with the car. They probably don’t expect an old mini to have an airbag system I suppose.
