Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A refined open-top-sports car experience, Morgan have been doing this for years, this late +4 example is no different.

The Morgan plus 4 is a more powerful and larger model than the earlier 4/4 model. It ran in production from 1950 to 1969 and was revived in 1985 until 2000 until the plus 8 came along. Morgan slowly improved the plus 4 over the years, one of the bigger changes being the introcution of Rover's punchy 140BHP T16 2.0L engine along with the firm's five-speed gearbox in 1992.

Finished in black (a welcome change from green in our opinion), and with ~38,000 miles on the clock and lots of history to back this up, it looks like a Morgan that stands out from the crowd.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Trevor the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I bought this Morgan over a year ago, a gift to myself for my retirement.

Trevor loves buying and tinkering with cars, a former trader in the industry, this Morgan was a car he bought to enjoy in his retirement. Unfortunately due to a health issue relating to Trevors eyes, he's not comfortable driving the Morgan any more and hence the reason for sale.

The car comes very well spec'd from the factory, with a few tasteful modifications added along Trevor's ownership. Finished in a glossy black and combined with the red leather upholstery this car truly looks the part. Trevor will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Craftmanship at its finest, a galvanized steel chassis and the wooden frame is used to hold the hand-beaten panel-work together.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on 15" wire alloys, sprayed in silver, which look in great condition all around.

The multi-spoked wire alloys are wrapped in Toyo Proxes CF1 rubber, which is dated 2010 and has a great amount of tread left for the new owner.

Bodywork

The plus 4's basic structure is a galvanized steel chassis, with wooden framing used as a frame for the hand-beaten body. The panel fit and condition are very good, with even and equal panel gaps throughout. Trevor reports all doors open and close without problems.

The underside appears solid, and very clean along with the engine bay, take a look at the photos and videos just to see how good these areas are.

Paint

Just as you would expect for a well cared for, modern example of the Morgan +4, the paint appears in excellent condition, it's even in colour and coverage across each panel.

We did notice some very minor marks left from the bolt-on roof and sides, just behind the doors. There are some very minor marks around the front of the bonnet panel gaps, and to the roof supports. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the finish of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading.

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the chrome trim, which doesn't have any obvious signs of pitting. The car comes with the removable roof in matching red as pictured.

Interior

Morgans are all about that classic feel, the cabin follows suit.

Seats and Carpets

Fixed-back sports seats became standard on the two-seat plus 4, reclinable seats were an additional option. The red leather upholstery looks simply excellent when contrasting against the black paintwork.

We did notice some very minor wear to the driver's bolsters, however, you'll have to get really close to notice this. The interior is lined with black felt-backed carpet an additional extra from the factory, along with many other features which really make this +4 stand out.

Dashboard

The upgraded walnut dash looks great along with the leather panel switch found in the centre of the dashboard. The dashboard looks very good, with only the slightest marks to the leather behind the steering wheel. Overall in great condition.

All of the gauges, switches, controls, and dials are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto Lita steering wheel appears in excellent condition and was upgraded a few years ago.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the interior of this car.

Mechanics

Powered by the punchy and desirable 2.0L Rover block, these Morgans are all about the open top experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The Morgan +4 saw many engine changes over the years, however, this 1997 example is fitted with the T16 2.0L Rover block and only shows ~38,000 on the odometer.

We noticed a very slight weep around the rocker cover gasket and sump on our consignment, no major leaks were observed. We did see a very minor patch of corrosion around the seat box, still early enough to catch.

We captured a cold start video with the +4, which can be seen in the mechanical video. The car started without fuss and with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

Trevor mentions the suspension and brakes work faultlessly, mentioning an exciting yet enjoyable ride with brake performance to match.

The Drive

Trevor tells us that driving a +4 is a unique experience that is bound to put a smile on your face wherever you travel. He describes it being fun, sporty, and exciting, all in one little package.

Electrics and Other

We're assured that all the electrical systems on the car work as expected.

The car is also fitted with spot lamps from the +8 which were fitted at factory as an optional extra.

History and Paperwork

Black over red, this Morgan +4 comes with a healthy history file and importantly presents in excellent condition.

The car comes with 24 years of extensive history, MOT certificates and receipts, including photos of the car being built at the Morgan factory. The original owner ordered the car with a lot of additional extras, which have really made this Morgan Plus 4 a unique roadster.

Options ordered from factory; Red leather upholstery, Walnut dash, spot lamp upgrade to +8, Rustproofing, Red Hood, Tonneau cover, Luggage carrier, Passenger door mirror, Clock, Leather instrument panel, Door handles.

Additional extras during ownership; Badge bar, Moto Lita steering wheel, Union jack badges, Stainless steel exhaust.

Trevor will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi Trevor, The still photos of the body look as though the car has had a poor quality respray with a lot of orange peel on the finish, particularly on the bonnet and doors. Can you throw any light on this? Barry
