When the early ‘CBA’ generation R35 GT-R touched down in the UK in mid-2009, it didn’t just join the supercar establishment - it shattered it. It earned instant mythic status by offering exotic-slaying performance at a price tag that baffled traditional European marques.

At the core of the R35 legend is the hand-built VR38DETT 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6. Factory-rated at 480 bhp and 430 lb-ft of torque, these early power units were famously understated in their official figures - delivering a relentless wallop of boost that launched the GT-R from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. Coupled with a rear-mounted 6-speed dual-clutch transmission and the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system, its power delivery wasn't just fast; it was explosive and unflappable regardless of British weather.

Visually, the R35 carved out a unique aesthetic. Unapologetically industrial and heavily influenced by Gundam mechanics, its muscular stance, aggressive front grille, and quad round taillights gave it an unmistakable highway presence. It projected an aura of raw, technical dominance, earning its 'Godzilla' moniker by systematically outperforming Italian and German exotics costing two to three times as much.

Smartly presented with an unapologetically aggressive, muscular design and iconic quad round taillights.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20-inch RAYS Engineering forged alloys are in superb condition, free from any notable marks or blemishes.

The front and rear of the car is fitted with Toyo Proxes Sport tyres with the front show a spec of 255/40 and 285/30 to the rear. Although date-coded 2021/2022, these have covered fewer than 150 miles.

Bodywork

Paint

The red paintwork retains consistent coverage and a rich lustre across all panels. While it presents impressively for its age, a thorough detail would elevate the depth of gloss and address minor surface blemishes.

Imperfections are minor and typical for the age, confined mostly to light stone chips on the front end and roof, subtle marks elsewhere, and mild scratching on the offside front wing. Overall, the car makes an outstanding impression.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in smart condition, and all lights and lenses remain clear and damage-free. Exterior trim is neat throughout, and the bumpers sit flush with no notable marks.

The only minor points to highlight are paint fade on the roof gutters trim, slight lacquer peel on the nearside headlamp washer cap, and light scuffing on the bottom edge of the nearside front air dam.

Seats and Carpets

The half-leather and half-Alcantara seats present in fantastic condition, showing only light, age-appropriate wear to the driver’s bolster.

Below, the carpets and luxury delivery pack GTR-emblem floor mats are in excellent shape throughout.

Dashboard

Designed in collaboration with Gran Turismo creators Polyphony Digital, the central screen offers advanced telemetry including boost pressure, G-forces, oil temperature, and lap times, all set within a clean matte black centre stack.

The dashboard has been remarkably well preserved, showing no significant signs of age across trim or padding. The fascia presents brilliantly, with decent controls, dials, and displays - all of which function exactly as they should.

There were no issues with the door cards, headlining, or interior trim.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multi-function steering wheel and gear lever are both in excellent condition.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts effortlessly from cold, flaring up instantly before settling into a smooth, steady warm idle. Because the VR38DETT engine utilises a mechanical valvetrain without hydraulic lifters, a distinct, rapid clicking is audible when cold - this is completely normal. The engine runs smoothly with no rattling, sputtering, or exhaust smoke.

All dashboard warning lights clear as expected, with oil pressure holding steady at 5 kg/cm². The engine idles evenly without hunting or unwanted noise, and the exhaust remained clean and smoke-free throughout our visit.

Note: The warning light illuminated on the speedometer during the cold-start video is simply the open-door indicator.

The engine presents very well overall, displaying only mild, age-related surface patina on some metal components.

The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission delivers a wonderfully raw, connected mechanical feel. It shifts smoothly at normal speeds with no uncharacteristic noise or harsh feedback.

Suspension and Brakes

Characterised by its firm, purpose-built ride, the car features Bilstein DampTronic adjustable suspension that effectively absorbs harsh bumps while keeping unwanted feedback at bay. Engineered by Nissan for maximum track performance, the setup delivers razor-sharp handling with zero noticeable body roll.

Factory-equipped with massive Brembo 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers on cross-drilled rotors, the car delivers genuine track-level stopping power. The brake pedal demands a firm, deliberate foot, responding instantly with superb modulation at higher speeds. As expected from a race-derived setup, there is a slight amount of operational noise, but the ultimate stopping performance is outstanding.

The Drive

At the heart of the Nissan GT-R lies the legendary VR38DETT- a 3.8-litre, twin-turbocharged 60-degree V6 widely regarded as one of the most over-engineered production engines ever built. Each power unit is hand-assembled in a dust-controlled clean room at Nissan's Yokohama plant by an elite group of master craftsmen known as Takumi, with a signed aluminium plaque on the engine block bearing the individual builder's name. In 2009 specification, it produces 480 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, laying the groundwork for a platform capable of far higher outputs.

Driving an early R35 GT-R is a brutally fast, highly visceral experience that feels delightfully raw and mechanical. Once the twin turbos spool, acceleration is explosive, planting you into the seat as the advanced all-wheel-drive system bites into the asphalt. The chassis remains completely flat through corners, offering incredible grip and track-bred stability.

During the drive, mechanical health remained in check: oil pressure dropped to 3 kg/cm² at warm idle, rising smoothly to 4–5 kg/cm² while cruising, with coolant temperatures holding steadily just below the halfway mark throughout.

Electrics and Other

Standard equipment includes a Cobra tracking system, rear park assist, the Luxury Delivery Pack, and an all-weather car cover.

History and Paperwork

The car comes with its history file supported by over £6,500 in receipts.

First registered in June 2009 by Nissan Oxford, this is an early UK-market 'CBA' generation GT-R officially imported by Nissan GB. Having had just one former keeper, it shows a remarkable 10,061 miles on the odometer. The history file features invoices and receipts totalling over £6,500 - including its original sales invoice and service records from both Nissan GB and renowned R35 specialist Litchfield.

In 2012, Litchfield performed an ECU remap alongside an MY12 gearbox software update. After being placed in dry storage in 2015, the car was recommissioned in 2022 with a £3,700 refresh, which included a full Litchfield service, new tyres and a reconditioned ABS pump. It holds a fresh MOT valid through July 2027 and is accompanied by its complete owner’s book pack, sales history, and two original keys.
