Introduction

Journey back in time to an era when driving was an experience, and cars were works of art.

The Opel GT stands as a timeless icon of automotive design, capturing the spirit of an era when sports cars were revered for their sleek, minimalist aesthetics and exhilarating driving experiences. Designed in-house by Opel, these stylish two-seater coupes were true sports cars, offering good performance with great handling.

With its striking, aerodynamic silhouette, the Opel GT made a bold statement on the road, earning it the nickname "Baby Corvette". This compact roadster not only boasted a captivating exterior but also featured innovative engineering under the hood, making it a dynamic performer.

A great amount of effort has been put into this example over its years with highlights including an engine rebuild ~2,000 miles ago, uprated suspension, new dash, headlining, new Weber carburettor, water pump, distributor rebuild, electric fuel pump and refurbished front brake callipers.

American design, German mechanicals, and a French body; something a little different - there's a reason the Opel GT still holds a special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts and collectors.

The Opel GT comes to the market from ~2 years ownership, with just one former keeper registered in the UK, having been imported in 2017 - this is not a run-of-the-mill type of car, we saw it first in a car show two years ago and fell in love with it then and think you will too.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Quirky, cool, stylish and sporty - one of my favourite cars!

The car's current owner, David, has been a big fan of Opel GT's for many years and has formed a big part of his motoring life for the last ~2 years.

An opportunity came up to buy the Opel after a lot of time spent searching for the right one, David said, "I've been a fan of these cars for as long as I can remember and I just had to own one. The shape of them is amazing, Corvette at the front and Ferrari Dino at the rear. To me they are near perfection in their styling and 'cool factor'. The unusual headlight mechanism is a great feature which I love. It's a stunning little car and I'm so glad I found this one. It's given me plenty to smile about when driving and lots of fond memories".

Affectionately known as 'Oliver', it's been a hard decision for David to sell the car, he said, "It will be really sad to see him go, but I also have a TR6 that I've had a long time and couldn't bear to sell that. The funds from the sale of the Opel will go towards more upkeep on the TR6, as that one needs a bit more of my attention."

If you have any questions about the car, David would be pleased to answer them in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its low-slung profile and pop-up headlights, sleek curves and bold lines, the Opel GT combines form and function.

Wheels and Tyres

The Opel 13" wheels add a sporty touch, they are original, although they have been banded adding extra depth to the rim, allowing a wider and taller tyre to be run.

We didn't observe any significant signs of damage and these presented well. The centre badges showed a little sign of wear but overall, not an area of real concern.

The wheels are fitted with Nankang tyres, which also appear to be in great condition and have been replaced by the current owner in 2019. The specification was noted as 205/60 across all four corners.

For a more detailed view of the exterior of the Opel and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

The car maintains well-aligned shut lines, and we couldn't spot any visible panel distortions. The Opel wears its age with pride, both doors and bonnet open and close smoothly and nothing stood out as a real concern for us when looking over the car.

During our visit, we didn't come across any significant dents on the car and there were thoughtful additions with protective edging to the door shuts.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a stunning orange tone, the paint was a great highlight of the car. Colour and finish was consistent across the entire car, and we struggled to note any major concerns with coverage or markings to the paint work, a great looking exterior.

If we were being picky, we noted a very minor blemish to the paint on the offside rear section on the boot edge.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please, take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass sections on the Opel GT appeared in great condition, including the windscreen, windows, mirrors, and lenses. We didn't observe any cracks, chips, or significant scratching during our visit.

The lights, both at the front and rear of the car, appeared to be in lovely condition consistent with the overall presentation of the vehicle, likely to have been previously replaced. We also noted the condition of the chrome trim to be in a great condition, with no significant damage or wear present throughout.

Interior

Minimalist elegance and driver-centric design, the Opel GT's interior is an invitation to embrace the open road with a touch of classic charm.

Seats and Carpets

The smart grey seats feature a ribbed inlay and are in great condition having been refurbished under previous ownership. The rear bench section appeared to be in lovely condition also, with hardly a mark on this area.

The cabin carpets are in great condition although could benefit from a light clean up. The carpets were replaced and new 3 point inertia roll seatbelts were fitted in 2020.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black dashboard shows in great condition having been restored by the previous owner in 2020. The top of the dashboard is showing no major issues. A smart touch is the fabric overlay adding some additional protection and style to the dash area. The odometer displayed ~13,136 miles at the time of our visit, this is reading is likley to have been around the clock.

The dials, switches, and controls are well maintained; all the surfaces appear clean and clear, with no fogging or scratching. We did not observe any issues with warning lights when starting the car from cold or during our road assessment. Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the GT's dashboard. Head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A deep-set Opel branded steering wheel shows a lovely wood trim finish in the interior. We did note signs of cracking to the joining points where the wheel meets the spokes.

The auto gear selector displayed a few marks related to its age, but with no major damage and maintaining a lovely condition. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The GT's 1.9L four-cylinder ~90BHP engine was capable of delivering 0-60 in ~10.6 seconds from the ~900KG Opel.

Engine and Gearbox

The transmission was smooth out on the road, a great note was the the current owner has had the gearbox sump gasket recently replaced along with a new oil filter and top up of transmission fluid.

Additional upgrades of the mechanical elements on the Opel include; an engine rebuild ~2,000 miles ago by the previous owner, KN filter, new Weber carburettor, new water pump and coil, distributor rebuild, electric fuel pump and a stainless steel exhaust.

We took the car on some local roads with the current owner to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, working through the automatic gearing in the GT and receiving an overview from David's perspective on the car's performance.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive, we didn't detect any significant knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension, overall the car performed as anticipated without any observed issues.

The brakes in the GT felt good, with no noticeable pulling or vibrations during the journey, allowing the car to come to a stop smoothly, meeting our expectations. The front brakes have been refurbished in August 2023 which is reflected in the paperwork section.

We cover the underside of the Opel in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

The Opel GT is sporty in its design, but didn't leave us with any major concerns on its ride feel as we found it supportive and comfortable on the journey. The tracking was adjusted recently giving the car a greater feel in its responsive handling.

The current owner, David, has enjoyed many happy miles in the GT, he said, "The Opel is just such great fun to drive, you can't beat driving down the A-Roads in it, it's just amazing".

Electrics and Other

On our visit, we observed that the temp and fuel gauge, oil pressure, speedometer and rev counter were all functioning without any issues. We did note however, that the clock wasn't working, although this is fairly standard on these cars.

A lovely feature were the charismatic 'pop-up' headlights mechanically operated from within the cabin. There is also an aftermarket Kenwood CD / Stereo fitted with handsfree mobile feature. Switches located in the centre section were also working when we visited the car.

David let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car so everything should be working correctly with the exception of the clock.

History and Paperwork

Imported to the UK in 2017, this Opel GT has seen numerous upgrades during its ~2 year ownership and with plenty of future potential, take a closer look at the Opel GT.

The car has been imported into the UK from America, included in the sale is the original Californian plate noting its history, a nice touch.

Originally yellow when it came out of the factory, the GT was then resprayed green at some time in its life before having a bare metal respray to the orange it is today. The colour on show today is an original Opel colour, the respray was completed by its previous owner.

The car has seen a good amount of beneficial work carried out on it which we've detailed in the paperwork gallery section. Particular highlights include; an engine rebuild approximately ~2,000 miles ago by the previous owner, uprated suspension, new dashboard and headlining, updated chrome work.

Other works include a new Weber carburettor, KN filter, new water pump and coil, distributor rebuild, electric fuel pump and the front brake callipers have also been refurbished.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Should any questions be required, David would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
