Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Good things come in small packages, arguably the best hot hatch from the '80s, the 1.9 205 GTi.

The high-performance GTi variant first launched in 1984 as a 1.6L. The 1.9L GTi came with a XU9JA engine that produced a whopping 128BHP. The 1.9L also gained half-leather seats, disc brakes all around, and 15" Speedline SL299 alloys. Even after its production stopped in 1993, its popularity never subsided. It went through an affordable track toy stage, yet now has made a massive bounce back as a rapidly increasing classic hot hatch, with unmodified examples being the most desirable.

This unmodified example has been owned by David for the previous 26 years and has been unused and dry stored in his garage for the previous 10 years, it's the ideal highly original appreciating classic for any enthusiasts collection.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This rare little 205 GTI 1.9 has been in the family since new.

The car was originally purchased by David's mother in 1989, a few years later she was switching cars and David bought the 205 GTi off her as a second car.

David used the 205 GTi 1.9 occasionally. The car needed a new alternator as it failed in 2010, and he has stored it in his mother's garage with the intention of replacing it. Ever since then, it's been sitting wait for that alternator. David very recently replaced the battery, and the result was of course that the car fired back in to life. David will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A visual masterpiece, this French hot-hatch is unmistakeable, nostalgia always wins over with these cars now.

Wheels and Tyres

Each 15" Speedline SL299 alloy looks in good condition, with curbing and marks on the outer edges. Put them in for refurbishment and they would look excellent.

The rubber looks to be in good condition, with plenty of tread for the new owner, due to lack of use and age the side walls are cracking. Please review the images and videos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this example, it appears all original with no signs of accident damage. We did notice a little dimple in the bonnet. All panel gaps look correct and flush around the car. The gas struts in which hold the boot up have lost their gas and would require replacing.

Paint

Finished in Peugeot Alpine White (POWT). The paint looks in good condition, overall deep in finish and colour and even across all the panels. With a little polishing, the paint would look excellent, and really give the car a new lease of life.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in great condition and in line with the rest of the car, all the trim/seals look good too with some slight signs of wear over the previous years.

The light lens look clear and free from any humidity. The front fog light lenses are missing, and the black trim around the car has started to fade and could do with a back-to-black restorer.

Interior

A leather interior designed by Paul Bracq lines this performance-focused 205.

Seats and Carpets

The 205 GTi 1.9 was graced with half-leather sports seats, with large bolsters to support those in the front. These original seats look great, the driver's bolsters are beginning to show their age with a little wear and cracks. The passengers and rear seats look great in this example.

The red carpets look great in the 205, clean and sporty, they really elevate it from any other 205.

Dashboard

An all-original affair, the dashboard looks great in this example. Crisp dials with legible numbers found on this well-cared for example. Please view the photographs for a closer view of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The distinctive sports GTi steering wheel is fitted within this cockpit and looks in excellent condition for it's age and mileage.

The gearstick is showing little signs of age with a few cracks after drying out during its dry storage.

Mechanics

A perky engine with plenty of power and precise steering are all well-known characteristics of the 205 GTi.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.9L arrived at the end of 1986, with tall gearing, effortless torque, disc brakes all around, and crisper dynamics.

The car has a 0-60mph speed of 7.6 seconds and a top speed 127MPH with 128BHP, impressive for this zingy little hot hatch.

As mentioned, the car has been stored in the garage for 11 years, David replaced the car's battery and it started up without issue. The idle was showing a little high at 1,500 rpm but after warming up dropped down a little. Due to the petrol being rather old within the tank, there was a little smoke at first, which cleared up after a little time running.

The alternator is currently disconnected, and the car is being sold without an MOT. With a few hours spent bringing the car up to roadworthy standard, David believes the car will pass with flying colours.

Suspension and Brakes

The 1.9 205 gained disc brakes all around to tame the speeds you'll be reaching in the 1.9L.

Having not been used for some time, the discs are showing a surface corrosion as you'd expect, David thinks these would clean up nicely and importantly they are still functional. Please take a look at the photos for a closer look at the brakes and suspension.

The Drive

The taller gearing offers effortless torque and disc brakes offer crisp dynamics in the 1.9 thanks to the low profile tires and revised offsets for the bigger wheels. The 1.9L engine weighs the same as the 1.6, yet no doubt offers a bigger thrill and prices reflect that.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the car appear good and mostly working (bar the alternator of course), the clock is working along with the electric windows. There has been an aftermarket Kenwood stereo along with 6x9's cut into the parcel shelve yet this system is currently disconnected.

History and Paperwork

A very desirable UK RHD 205 GTi 1.9, one family since new ownership, and highly original spec.

Having been stored since 2010 when the alternator developed an issue, this car is being sold without an MOT. It will need a bit of work to ensure it's road legal, but you'll see from the media shared that time has been kind to this Pug, most likely due to careful storage. The 205 GTi comes with it's original manuals, paperwork, service history which is great to see on this low ownership example.

David purchased the car 26 years ago from his mother, who bought the car new from Peugeot in 1969. The car appears in a high-originally unmodified state, with the only addition being the Kenwood radio and 6x9's on the parcel shelf.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi.
