Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

Arguably a car that has never been bettered by Peugeot - its legacy remains popular to this day and is reflected in the rising values.

The hot hatch is said to have killed the traditional sports car, and while the Peugeot 205 GTi wasn’t the first of the genre, it was certainly one of the most memorable. The combination of the Pininfarina style, complemented by outstanding handling, supple ride in a practical compact hatchback endeared it to millions of people. Powered by the later 115bhp 1.6 engine, this version is often considered the more evenly balanced of the 205 GTi range, as the manageable power output best suited the chassis.

The car has been subject to sympathetic owners over its 31-year life and has been spared much of the abuse that these plucky little cars may have experienced. As a later 1.6 GTi with the desirable no-sunroof option, it is in excellent condition having been subject to a recent cosmetic body restoration. The car has retained much of its originality throughout including the period Peugeot Clarion tape deck. All you need to do is to dig up your old rave mixes and enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Adam the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I think it's the ultimate pocket rocket and I've loved every single moment of driving this car.

Adam took ownership of the car in 2017 and has not needed to do much to the car, thanks to a thorough cosmetic restoration by its previous owner. Used as an occasional car, Adam is now looking to sell the car to facilitate his next driver car - an Aston Martin! It may have a more desirable badge Adam, but will it be as much fun as this little Peugeot (quizzical face).

Exterior

This is an excellent survivor and has all the key ingredients you're looking for - in absolutely the right color combination too.

Wheels and Tyres

The silver alloy wheels look great against the graphite colour - it really is a great colour combination that seems to suit the car so well.

The Speedlines were refurbished last year and are in sharp condition, they're complemented by a set of 2016 Continental tyres, with well above the legal tread.

Bodywork

The panel fit is consistent throughout, with flush fitting panels. No issues with the opening and closing of doors, with a refreshing lack of panel damage that seem to inflict Peugeots of this age.

Importantly, the boot area, all doors, engine bay and underside are all solid.

We just noticed a very small spot of corrosion observed in the near-side rear section of the sill.

Paint

The paint finish is in excellent condition, with a consistent evenness and no mismatched colours.

There are a few very small scratches observed on the tailgate, with a handful of stone chips evident on the lower front valance.

Glass and Trim

The glass is is excellent condition too with no chips or laminate issues seen. The glass rubber trim is also in good condition, with no splits or evidence of water ingress.

The plastic trim condition is above the expectations of a 205 GTI of this age - it's been very well cared for.

Interior

Originality is the key for this car - a genuine step back to 1990!

Seats and Carpets

The interior presentation is very good and has worn the years well. The seats are in fine fettle, with no signs of damage. They are in tear-free condition with no significant wear to the bolsters. The carpets and mats are in good condition too, with no signs of major wear or colour fade. The door cards and headlining are unmarked.

Dashboard

The dashboard plastics have resisted age really well - please take a good look at the images as you'll see no signs of significant damage, scratches or misuse evident. The switches, dials and controls are in good condition and all are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel and gear stick are fitted.

The steering wheel shows some signs of wear, as to be expected. The gear stick is in line with the decent condition of the interior.

Mechanics

Peugeot's mechanical durability really shines through in this example - you won't be disappointed.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine condition is nicely presented as a result of a minor overhaul in 2015. Also, the cold start presented no issues for the 1.6-litre block; it fired up with no hesitation. No unwanted engine noises, rattling or blowing was observed and it gets up to temperature as expected.

No leaks were observed, with all of the old coolant hoses being replaced 2 years ago with modern black silicone replacements. The exhaust is in good condition and the gearbox is said to be in good working order too.

Suspension and Brakes

The pads and discs were in good working order, with no specific issues reported. Anti-roll links have been renewed. The suspension is standard and appears to be in good condition.

The Drive

All GTi model cars drive with agility but they do need that level of maintenance to help preserve the magic - evident on this car.

Adam assures us the car doesn't produce any unwanted knocking noises from the steering and feels tight around those bends. This is one of the things he'll miss most about the car.

Electrics and Other

Some of the engine electrical system has been partly renewed in recent years, with the general lighting and driver controls said to be in good working order.

History and Paperwork

The car was treated to an effective cosmetic restoration 6 years ago and looks amazing today.

A carefully arranged file of documentation stretching back to the '90s is always a good sign of a cherished car. In recent years, the car has seen a period of inactivity, with more recent use suggesting a leisurely time for the car. It was treated to a body restoration in 2016, with some engine bay work carried out in the previous year.

The car was also subject to a service, including a timing belt kit and water pump in 2015. The owner also carried out a little detective work with the DVLA, to find out the details of ownership of its previous keepers and includes some fascinating handwritten notes.

The car also comes with the original order form and has just been given 12 months of MOT.
