Introduction
Alan Stuart
A true hot hatch legend - light, punchy, and endlessly fun to drive - it remains one of the most thrilling and iconic drivers' cars of its era.
The Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 stands as a true icon of the hot hatch era — a car that defined driving excitement for an entire generation.
Launched as the more powerful sibling to the 1.6 GTi, the 1.9 took everything that made the original great and turned it up a notch. Its lightweight chassis, superbly balanced handling, and lively 1.9L engine producing ~126 BHP created a driving experience that was both thrilling and confidence-inspiring.
Praised by enthusiasts and journalists alike, the 205 GTi quickly became the benchmark for small performance cars, offering pure mechanical feedback and agility that few rivals could match. With its flared arches, red trim details, and unmistakable stance, it looked every bit as exciting as it felt to drive.
This particular 205 has received a great amount of project work carried out on it during its current ~4 year ownership. Works have been completed in conjunction with the owners friend who was at the time, Honda’s lead UK mechanic and worked with their racing team.
Works completed were a cooling system renewal with a new radiator and thermostat. The wiring was checked and repaired where needed and plugs and connectors replaced for reliability. The engine oil, filter, distributor, and plugs were all replaced. A custom oil cooler and temperature valve were fitted, and both front lower arms and front brakes were renewed. It comes with a currently MOT valid until 11.01.2026.

I WANT ONEAsk Questions
Good morning Ben. For a short period I put one of my private plates on the car which was from memory G17 DRK. I regretted it as I like to keep things original as possible, so moved it back onto my Audi SQ7 and reinstated the original numberplate which is now on the car again. Thanks Tim
Hi Tim
I see that there is a plate change on the vehicle in the past. Do you have any information with regard to this. Was it a private plate?
Thanks
Ben.
Hello Tim. Can I ask when the car was last serviced, especially the cambelt/waterpump? Many thanks, John.
Hi John. There was some work undertaken on the headlights and wheel bearings at the last MOT in December. I have only done 1000 miles in the car during my four year ownership because of my back problems, so I’ve maintained and MOT the car as required. The water pump and cam belt have not need addressing during my ownership, and note we did do a numberplate to numberplate review and carried out the following work:
Front radiator replaced. New coolant , new Thermostat.
Engine bay wiring address . Plugs replaced were needed and and wires repaired/ replaced
Engine oil replaced, oil filter , distributor replaced, Spark plugs replace.
Oil cooler custom fit inc new hose creation and oil temp valve fitted.
Both front lower arms replaced.
Front disc’s and pads replaced.
The car has always been kept with the rest of my collection in an insulated and dehumidifier garage. You’re welcome to come and test drive the car should you wish.
Thanks Tim
Hi Tim. I see that the car had a new boot floor and some welding work done in June 2020 but most on the invoice is redacted. Can you provide some detail on the nature of this work? I’m particularly interested in whether this was crash damage repair or replacement due to rust. Thanks in advance, Sonny.
Hi Sonny. All of that work was done before I owned the car. The previous owner was also a car collector and had restored this car to original spec. None of my mechanics spotted anything at all that would be considered a result of an impact so my assumption is that it was a rust repair – it’s of course French car from the 80s! Regards, Tim
Hi Tim, thanks for your response. Are you able to share any of the missing (non-personal) information from the invoice? For instance, what does it say after “Unit Repairs to…” ?
Hi Sonny. I’ve checked the invoice and the wording after ‘Unit repairs to’ is a person’s full name, starting with ‘Dale… ‘. I assume that’s why it’s been redacted. Thanks, Tim
Hi Tim. Ah, ok. Thanks for clarifying. Sonny
Hi Tim.
A bit of a silly one but what fuel do you currently use plus if I was the winner would it be viable to drive it from yours to mine in Eastbourne with no issues.
Many thanks
Paul
Hi Paul. I always try and use the best quality super unleaded, the Shell 99 RON is good. I also put in Redex to stabilise the fuel and clean the fuel system. The 205 has a current MOT and is in perfect driving order. All you would need to do is to get the car insured and everything will be sorted. Tim
