Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner and Photographer

A true hot hatch legend - light, punchy, and endlessly fun to drive - it remains one of the most thrilling and iconic drivers' cars of its era.

The Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 stands as a true icon of the hot hatch era — a car that defined driving excitement for an entire generation.

Launched as the more powerful sibling to the 1.6 GTi, the 1.9 took everything that made the original great and turned it up a notch. Its lightweight chassis, superbly balanced handling, and lively 1.9L engine producing ~126 BHP created a driving experience that was both thrilling and confidence-inspiring.

Praised by enthusiasts and journalists alike, the 205 GTi quickly became the benchmark for small performance cars, offering pure mechanical feedback and agility that few rivals could match. With its flared arches, red trim details, and unmistakable stance, it looked every bit as exciting as it felt to drive.

This particular 205 has received a great amount of project work carried out on it during its current ~4 year ownership. Works have been completed in conjunction with the owners friend who was at the time, Honda’s lead UK mechanic and worked with their racing team.

Works completed were a cooling system renewal with a new radiator and thermostat. The wiring was checked and repaired where needed and plugs and connectors replaced for reliability. The engine oil, filter, distributor, and plugs were all replaced. A custom oil cooler and temperature valve were fitted, and both front lower arms and front brakes were renewed. It comes with a currently MOT valid until 11.01.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Driving it is a real treat - it reminds you why these cars were so highly praised in their day - even on today’s roads it feels so composed and eager.

Tim had always wanted to own the trio of a Mk1 Golf GTi and a Renault 5 GT Turbo, so finding a 205 GTi 1.9 was a major piece of the set. The 205 always felt like it was the one that got away when he was younger. Tim says, "It’s always stayed with me as one of the greats. Being able to finally buy one in later life felt like closing the circle".

When he was looking to complete his set, mileage didn’t matter as much as condition and authenticity and wanted a genuinely straight and original car, Tim said, "This one stood out because of its history, the care of its previous owner, and the excellent bodywork and paint. Inside and out it was clear this car had been cherished".

Tim is reluctantly reducing his car collection after major spinal surgery last year. He says, "These cars deserve to be driven and enjoyed, and I can’t do that as much as I used to. This 205 has had a lot of care and attention, and I’d love to see it go to someone who appreciates its originality and the effort that’s gone into keeping it at such a high standard".

Should any further queries be needed on the car, Tim would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

The 205 is a true hot hatch icon - compact, purposeful, and instantly recognisable, and with its flared arches and red pinstripes, it perfectly captures the spirit of ’90s performance style.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15" alloy wheels, finished in silver all appeared to be in excellent condition. We noted no concerns here as the wheels have been previously refurbished.

The 205 is fitted with Toyo Proxes T1R tyres to the front and rear showing 195/55 with date codes from 2015 at the front.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Peugeot and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The exterior is nicely presented and the panels are flush to the body with positive shut lines. Both doors, bonnet and boot open and close with ease.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The paintwork on the car has great coverage and overall quality across the panels, finished in a classic grey colour.

The car is currently stored inside a dehumidified, insulated garage, just part of the reason the 205 looks as good as it does.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side and rear windows all displayed well although there was a small area of scratching on the boot glass.

Front and rear lights all appear in great condition.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the condition of the rest of the car.

All plastics have been re-dyed so the car looks factory fresh.

To the interior, door cards showed in stunning condition and the headlining of the cabin displayed well too, a lovely place to take in the road ahead.

Take a look through the gallery section and review videos. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

image

Interior

Step inside the 205 and you’re met with a pure drivers' cabin - supportive sports seats, red stitching, and a focused, nostalgic feel that defines the golden era of hot hatches.

Seats and Carpets

The Peugeot is kitted out with black leather seats with red piping and detail - they show in good condition, but there were a few areas of wear to the driver's and passenger bolster although nothing major here. To the rear of the cabin, there were no real concerns.

The car is fitted with black and red floor mats. The carpet areas in the cabin and front boot are also in excellent condition and looked stunning. We found no major issues when looking underneath the floor mats.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in great shape with no cracks or scratches to report. The mileage counter showed ~132,133 miles at the time of our visit.

The display area of the black dials and gauges is clear and without concern, with the setup looking very smart. All dials are functional, showing clearly with no obvious marking or scratching to the facings across the driver's section.

Our interior gallery section offers some closer images of the 205 dashboard - head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Finished with leather edges, the steering wheel is in a nice overall condition.

The manual gear selector showed very well and without major concern. The handbrake showed in great condition and without concern.

We've detailed more images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, in our Interior Gallery section - head over to see more shots of what the 205 has to offer.

image

Mechanics

Powered by a lively 1.9L engine producing ~126 BHP, the GTi sprints from 0–60 mph in ~7.6 seconds from factory - a true hot hatch icon with power and sharp response.

Engine and Gearbox

The car hadn't been driven for some time but had no issues starting up and we noted no concerns here. The Peugeot also performed without issue while running out on the road and we saw no worrying notes or signs of smoke. It comes with a stainless steel exhaust to give a it a slightly throatier sound.

The manual gearbox worked well, with no unwanted noises or concerns with the functionality of the car. The 205 showed no concerns regarding its performance while we were driving out in it. A pleasurable drive taking on the roads with ease.

We took the car out on some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the GTi through the gears and filmed our overview on how the car performed.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Both front lower suspension arms were renewed as part of the previous restorative works.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey, and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. The front brakes have been renewed through the car's current ownership.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the 205.

The Drive

Tim, the current owner, tells us more about his driving experience with the Peugeot:

"What I love most about the 205 is the way it drives. With a big engine, and hardly any weight, it’s quick, balanced, and utterly alive on the road.

Jeremy Clarkson once said the 205 GTi was the fastest way to get from A to B in Britain, and he wasn’t wrong. I’ve owned and driven plenty of hot hatches, but this still feels special.

It’s light, responsive, beautifully sprung, and somehow manages to feel both classic and modern at the same time".

image

Electrics and Other

The car is equipped with an upgraded Kenwood stereo, with the LED's smartly colour coded to the interior.

New stereo speakers are also featured in the cabin.

Tim told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car - all switches and gauges appear to be in great condition.

History and Paperwork

Keenly restored, this stunning 205 comes to market with an updated radiator, custom oil cooler, new temperature valve and has been dry stored - very well set for its next owner.

When Tim first bought the car, the previous owner had said there was nothing left to do. Tim didn't want to stop there, as with his keen eye for detail, there’s always something.

Tim commissioned a full mechanical refresh from front to back with his friend, Matt Close, who was then Honda’s lead UK mechanic and worked with their racing team. Tim tells us, "He’s now Yamaha’s lead technician, so the standard of work speaks for itself".

Working with Matt, Tim went through everything on the car. The cooling system was renewed with a new radiator, cooler, and thermostat. The wiring was checked and repaired where needed, plugs and connectors replaced for reliability. The engine oil, filter, distributor, and plugs were all replaced. A custom oil cooler and temperature valve were fitted, and both front lower arms and front brakes were renewed.

The result is a car that runs exactly as it should, ready to be enjoyed. Since then, it’s been stored inside Tim's dehumidified, insulated garage.

There are no modifications, and that’s one of the reasons Tim loves it so much, saying, "It’s how Peugeot intended, with the rare and desirable detail of having no sunroof". The 205 has a period-correct stereo with LEDs that match the red carpet piping, and new speakers for modern usability. The wheels have been fully restored, and all plastics re-dyed so the car looks sharp and factory fresh.

We cover the history of the Peugeot in our paperwork gallery. Take a look over the previous records and MOT certificates to see more behind the 205, it has a currently MOT valid until 11.01.2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Tim

I see that there is a plate change on the vehicle in the past. Do you have any information with regard to this. Was it a private plate?

Thanks
Ben.

Hello Tim. Can I ask when the car was last serviced, especially the cambelt/waterpump? Many thanks, John.

Hi Tim. I see that the car had a new boot floor and some welding work done in June 2020 but most on the invoice is redacted. Can you provide some detail on the nature of this work? I’m particularly interested in whether this was crash damage repair or replacement due to rust. Thanks in advance, Sonny.

Hi Tim, thanks for your response. Are you able to share any of the missing (non-personal) information from the invoice? For instance, what does it say after “Unit Repairs to…” ?

Hi Tim.
A bit of a silly one but what fuel do you currently use plus if I was the winner would it be viable to drive it from yours to mine in Eastbourne with no issues.
Many thanks
Paul
