Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A perfect blend of comfort, handling and affordability, is the Peugeot 306 is now considered a modern design classic?

Following the near-perfect FWD ingredients of the iconic 205, the 90s generation of Peugeot was noted for its handling finesse and driving dynamics. Every single one of that generation of Peugeot was a genuine hoot to drive. The 306 arrived in 1993 and became a best seller, thanks to its wide range of options, engines and 4 different body styles, including the Pininfarina penned Cabriolet. Tapping into the budget touring market, the 306 is amongst the most stylish of 90s rag-tops, and its elegant styling, sturdy construction and practicality made it a popular choice for sun-seekers. With the 2-litre versions being deployed for the higher spec models, the ~133BHP engine gave the car a useful turn of speed to match the already superb handling and ride.

This 1999 Series 2 Peugeot 306 Cabriolet is the SE edition, fitted with full leather seats, alloys, PAS, full electric windows and ABS. Sold with an MOT valid until June 2024, it has also seen a new cam belt and service not much more than ~600 miles ago and has evidence of spending over the last two years.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Daniel who is dealing with the sale, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Sleek, enjoyable to drive and based on proven mechanicals.

The car is being handled by Daniel on behalf of the owner who sadly passed away. The car has not been used for a few months but appears to have seen a fair amount of attention and spending while it was in the care of its owner.

There are a few things that require some attention, and so the car should be considered a bit of a rolling recommission. Daniel will answer any questions he can about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The elegant Pininfarina lines of the 306 Cabriolet still cuts a dashing figure today.

Wheels and Tyres

The five-spoke alloys are in good shape, with some minor scuffs, particularly on the offside front wheel.

All four of the Uniroyal tyres were fitted in 2022 and therefore show plenty of tread.

Bodywork

The floor pan, inner wheel wells, and engine bay appear to be in good shape, with the boot floor looking solid too. Externally the body presents positively, with no issues in terms of the panel flow or shut lines. It is generally free from panel blemishes, except for some mild corrosion on the offside rear arch lip and a treatable dent on the rear valance. All of the doors open and close without issues, but unfortunately the hood is not working.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car's paintwork is well presented with an even hue and decent lustre. It would benefit from a deep clean to reveal the true finish, but aside from a handful of minor chips on the driver's door edge and around the fuel cap, it suggests the car has been well cared for.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The bumpers are well mounted and free of significant scuffs and the glass all appears to be intact. There is perishing noted on both quarter light seals, although the door seals are generally good. The lights and lenses are intact.

Both door mirrors have minor scuffs and the driver's side door handle is finished in black, not the body colour. The plastic trim is well mounted, with some minor signs of age noted.

Interior

The plush and well presented leather seats add an element of decadence to the near perfect driving position.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with a full leather interior, the driver-side seat shows some mild wear on the outer bolster. They would benefit from a deep clean but are all free from rips. The rear seats also have headrests. We noted a little condensation of the rear glass, with some mild evidence of mold on the seats.

The carpets show some mild wear around the driver's footwell but overall present well. All were dry on the day.

Dashboard

The plastic dashboard, centre console, trim and facia are in decent condition, with no significant damage. The switches, instruments and controls are intact, although the digital clock will need attention. The leather door cards are in decent order, with some mild lifting on the passenger side.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

There is mild wear on the gear knob but its gaiter is in good condition. The steering wheel is in a similar condition.

Mechanics

Rewarding to drive, the 2.0-litre engine is not only peppy but offers reasonable economy too.

Engine and Gearbox

The car started up without any issues, no unwanted noises were heard from the engine, although there was the lightest of ticking - a characteristic of the XU engine. The warning lights stayed off on the dashboard, as it was left to run for a further 10 minutes after the initial start up. There were no signs of misfiring, undulations or hiccups from the engine. No unsightly smoke was noted from the exhaust after the condensation cleared.

The gears were not given a proper chance to be used on the move but the clutch appears to engage with no issues as first and reverse were easily selected.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension and brakes appear to be in good working order, the brakes didn’t appear to bind at low speeds.

The Drive

Due to the car not having any road tax, nor Daniel having the insurance to drive the car, we sadly cannot offer a true reflection on the way the Peugeot drives. However, it comes with evidence of a regular online MOT record and has been lighly used over the last 10 years which should offer some confidence.

We managed to drive the car around the car park, to ensure the gears and clutch engaged as they should, the clutch had a good biting point. The engine temperature and oil pressure remained stable as we left the car running.

Electrics and Other

The hood appears to be in good physical condition, but we were unable to test its functionality. It might be operated manually. It was checked by a Peugeot main dealer in February 2023, who concluded that there was an issue with leaking rams and the operation of the storage lid - it was apparently fixed on that occasion.

History and Paperwork

There has been recent attention to both the cosmetics and mechanical aspects of the 306 Cabriolet, being sold on behalf of the deceased, it should be considered somewhat a rolling recommission.

Originally registered in Coventry in April 1999, it appears to have been used lightly used over the years, as suggested by the online MOT records. Placed into storage in 2014, it was then recommissioned in 2021 and sold to the last owner in the spring of 2022. According to the MOT records, it has covered around 1,000 miles since then and is backed up by over £2,000 worth of invoices including cosmetic repairs, attention to the brakes, roof investigation, 4 new tyres, a service, a new cam belt and a radiator. It passed its MOT last June with nothing more than a light oil seepage as an advisory and has only seen 50 miles since then. It has an MOT to June 2024 and comes with a current V5.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi
Do all of the 4 window electrics work properly and did you attempt to clean any of the marking / staining from the seats? Thanks.
