Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

The Targa blends open-air freedom with iconic 911 performance, delivering classic style, thrilling pace, and the unmistakable soundtrack that defines Porsche’s legend.

The original Porsche 911 Targa, retaining the unmistakable lines of the mid-1970s 911 but with its distinctive Targa roof - it delivers the pure, open-air driving experience that defined an era.

What sets this car apart is the later replacement to a 3.2-litre engine, an upgrade from its original 2.7-litre unit. With a great deal of restoration behind it as well, including a 2010 respray, works to the kidney bowls, panels and new seals, the result is a car that blends updated classic character with a sharper, more engaging drive.

Recent servicing was completed in June 2025 where the fuel was drained, engine checked over, earth leads cleaned, the spark plugs and fuel filter was replaced and the rear arches were cleaned and waxoly'd.

With its mix of vintage charm and upgraded performance, this special Targa 3.2 stands out well - a car that looks every inch the classic Porsche while offering a more versatile and rewarding experience behind the wheel.

The previous owner had the car for over 40 years and has documented some of the past history of the car in the paperwork section - a fascinating read. The same owner carried out a lot of work to the car and it's clear to see by our images and videos how good that restoration was. A lot of money has been spent on the engine when it was changed, back in 1989, plus on the body work too, with all the usual areas of concern being addressed, e.g. wings, sills, kidney bowls etc.

So this is a little something different to factory stock example, but it has all the right ingredients making it a fantastic opportunity to buy a '74 car at sensible money, due to the low reserve the owner has set.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Adam the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car delivers exactly what I was looking for, a setup that makes every journey feel truly connected, offering pure driver engagement on the road.

Adam, the current owner, has always been a fan of Porsche, having owed several models through his time driving.

Adam was on the look out for something just right when he saw this example for sale, he said "I jumped at the opportunity to pick up this restored 911, I always wanted to get one and was looking at sale for many months before coming across something I really liked. It was hard to find a decent car with good condition at realistic price and this is the one I decided on".

The 911 has been one of Adam's favourite Porsches that he's owned so far, saying, "The analogue experience is the best thing about it for me, you feel really connected to the road. For the age of the car, the performance is unbelievable".

A change in recent circumstances now means Adam has decided to part ways with his 911.

Should you have any questions about the car, Adam would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Targa is all about classic open-air motoring, combining timeless design, engaging performance, and the pure driving joy only an early 911 can deliver.

Wheels and Tyres

The car comes with 16" 5-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels with Porsche centre emblems. All appeared to be in lovely condition having been refurbished in 2010, just a couple of age related marks, although nothing major here.

The front of the 911 is fitted with Toyo Proxes tyres and a spec of 205/55. To the rear, the car was fitted with Falken FK542's with a spec of 225/50.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Porsche and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork of the 911 showed in lovely overall condition. Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned.

Thanks to the restoration works, the quality shows well across the body when we looked over the car on our visit; both doors, bonnet and boot open and close without concern with the panels gaps all looking good too.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Showing well in a smart finish of red, the coverage is even across the car with no noted imperfections to colour.

We didn't note any real concerns with the paint apart from a handful of small marks across the front of the car. Overall though, the car looked really stand out, and it was clear a lot of effort had gone into its restoration.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, front and rear lights all appear in excellent condition, and we could see no signs of scratching or chips on the glass.

Badges and emblems are present and look very smart.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The interior cabin trim sections showed well, just a couple of very minor marks.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

Step inside the Targa and you’re greeted with a perfect mix of classic simplicity and driver-focused design, capturing the pure spirit of '70s Porsche motoring.

Seats and Carpets

The seats showed well and looked presentable - there were some minor wear to the driver's bolster, as to be expected. The front seat backs showed a couple of minor marks from the internal springs. The rear seats appeared to be barely used.

The restoration works have continued through the interior, and the 911 looked great overall in the cabin area.

Black carpets with red piping in the front of the cabin show in a great condition after being replaced in 2014, complimenting the seats. The boot reflected the same standard as the cabin, showing well, just some cleaning to bring up the level slightly. Underneath the cabin carpets on the floor pans, showed no concerning issues.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in good shape, but there were a few signs of age to the trim edges above the steering wheel.

The classic 5 dial set up in the Porsche with its black dials looked great and these were all functioning as expected. The odometer showed with ~81,545 miles at the time of our visit.

The switches and controls all appear to be in nice condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge and oil temp and were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Porsche steering wheel is in keeping with the rest of the interior - no major issues to report.

The gear stick looks to be in good condition, although the numbers were a little worn.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

Powered by an upgraded 3.2-litre flat-six, the 911 Targa delivers strong performance and an unmistakable air-cooled soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up, we noted no concerns and the Porsche performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all.

The manual gearbox is mechanical in its setup and showed no concerns with shifting the 911 through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no observed issues and the car felt solid on the road.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem, and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

Adam told us more about his experience with the Porsche, "The Targa is a really engaging car to drive and very driver focused. When you get a bend just right it really flies as the driving dynamics are just so brilliant".

Please take a moment to view the On-the-Road video to see the car starting and being driven around the local area.

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in good overall condition.

The Porsche is fitted with an aftermarket Pioneer stereo and speaker set.

A spare engine lid with whale-tail spoiler is also included with the car.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Adam told us everything was in working order. You'll notice the internal indicators light up with the handbrake applied, Adam told us. "Regarding the indicators being on with the handbrake applied, there is no fault with the car, it's due to the quality of the replacement flasher relay from Porsche. With earlier 911s the replacement relays from Porsche cause the indicators light to blink (only on the dash). This was confirmed by Autofarm on its last visit in June when they fitted an original relay the problem went away. However they wouldn't sell the relay as it was from a technician's own stash for testing.".

History and Paperwork

Previously restored with a new engine and servicing completed in June 2025, the Porsche is well set for many more miles on the road ahead.

The Porsche has seen its fair share of restoration over the years with the results showing clearly today. Through the '80s and '90s, the car was fully restored in stages and has been stripped down to its bare shell with a respray completed in 2010. The kidney bowls and panels were updated, and new seals were fitted.

Most notably, after a failure on the original 2.7L engine, the Targa was upgraded to a 3.2L unit.

In June 2025, the Porsche was taken to Auto Farm were the fuel was drained, the engine was checked over, a clean up of the earth leads completed, electrical investigations actioned, and a clean and waxoyl of the rear arches carried out. The spark plugs and fuel filter was also replaced with work costing over ~£900.

The Targa is complete with its Porsche drivers' manual, pocket guide and service book.

You'll notice the mileage drops in 2016 on the MOT records, Adam tells us, "This was because the original speedo failed and rather than clock up unknown mileage the previous owner fitted another speedo and then swapped it back once the original was repaired. This just explains why the mileage changes on the MOT history; I also have the speedo that was fitted temporarily (see images), so the next owner can have a bit of peace of mind". Of course not many KMS (that's what the clock records in) were completed in that time, as you can see - it works out at 187 KMS only.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

I see the car has a km speedometer with it. Was it originally LHD and converted to RHD? Do you know what the total mileage is on the car (the bodyshell, suspension etc.). Thanks John
