Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

With a Porsche 718 RSK costing in the millions - the next logical step for most of us is a replica based on the versatile VW Beetle.

Porsche started to design the 718 RSK in 1956 in preparation for the 1957 race season. It was a continued development of the 550A Spyder, but using a lighter tubular space frame chassis, stronger brakes, and revised front suspension. The RSK stands for RennSport (sports-racing), and K is the shape of the revised torsion-bar suspension setup. Mid-engine and running a 1500cc quad-cam engine taken from the 550A produced 142 bhp. Unfortunately, prices for a 718 RSK are into the millions, putting them out of reach for most of us.

This is when companies like the one that has produced their take on the 718 Spyder come into play, meaning anyone wanting to have the looks of the 718 can do at a fraction of the cost. Based on a VW Beetle chassis means the car is relatively easy to maintain, and spares are readily available.

This was the appeal to our seller Rodney who is a retired mechanic - he fancied something to have a tinker with whilst being cheap to run and drawing attention wherever it goes.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Rodney the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The fibreglass body is a great take on Porsche’s 718 RSK.

Wheels and Tyres

The Smiths 14” chrome 5 spoke wheels are in excellent condition and have new matching tyres fitted, which have covered very few miles.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The body, being a replica, is fibre glass which is in good condition. The doors look to align as they should and open and close nicely. The engine cover also fits well, unclipping at the bottom corner to enable it to be lifted up when fuel is needed, as the tank is mounted behind the engine. The front cover also looks to align as it should. With this lifted off, there is access to the steering and front beam.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Paint

Finished in bright yellow, it's safe to say that the 718 stands out from the crowd. The finish is good, but there are some odd chips and scratches dotted over the body, which have been touched up before it made its way to the UK.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off this 718 RSK replica as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The front screen is tinted and has a few fine scratches. This doesn’t affect your vision as you tend to sit higher than the screen. The headlights have perspex covers to keep the lines of the 718 nice and smooth. These look to be sealed around the edges preventing any water ingress.

Please see our detailed gallery showing the whole exterior.

Interior

Minimal but practical is all that's needed for a sports car - this does what it says on the tin.

Seats and Carpets

The seats look to be in as new condition and have no signs of any wear or damage. They are covered in vinyl with yellow piping to match the exterior bodywork.

The carpets are in good condition and fit the floor pan well, and these also have no excessive wear to be seen.

Please see the interior gallery section for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished with a carbon look panel with what looks to be the original Beetle gauges. These are reported to be working as they should, and the odometer shows a reading of ~44,239 kilometres.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An ergonomically designed steering wheel is fitted, which is in good condition and shows little signs of any wear. The gearknob has a similar carbon fibre effect as the dash, which has some light wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

1600cc VW Beetle engine is what powers the 718 RSK.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a 1600cc engine from the Beetle, it fires up as it should with no issues. There is a performance intake fitted to allow more air into the air cooled engine. With the engine being fitted by Rodney, he has given it a once over to ensure everything is as it should be. He has also fitted two stainless steel silencers, giving the 1600 an improved note when the loud pedal is pressed.

The car has only been driven very short distances since its completion, but it is reported to go through the gears as expected.

Suspension and Brakes

The car handles well with the chassis and suspension from a Beetle, and is quite versatile; just like a Beetle.

The brakes are reported to be working as they should, pulling the car to a halt in a straight line.

The Drive

It may not be the fastest engine ever produced in the Beetle, but put a fibreglass body around it, especially one with no roof. The lightness becomes apparent as the car moves along at an acceptable pace.

The main thing is its looks! It turns heads, and we are sure you'll agree that it is undoubtedly a ‘stand out from the crowd’ kind of car.

Electrics and Other

There's not a tremendous amount of electrics to worry about in the 718. The headlight switch is new, and all of the electronics are reportedly working as they should.

History and Paperwork

With the car now registered the 718 RSK is ready to go.

There are just a few invoices showing some parts purchased for the vehicle. The car was registered with the DVLA on the 1st May 2022.

We’ve done seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and HPI check.

The car is registered as a 'VW Beetle' on DVLA - the registration number is LFM 829N.

We've summarised our view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
