Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Carrera 3 was a combination of elements from Porsche’s most legendary cars, it would go on to be the basis for all future 911 development.

The 'Carrera 3' has a very special place in history for the Porsche 911, bringing together elements from Porsche's most legendary cars. The Carrera 3 2993CC engine used the same die-cast aluminium crank-case as it’s 930 Turbo cousin. The model was built between ’76-’77, and slotted in between the standard 911 and the 930 turbo. During its short life span, ~3687 cars were built, with only ~1123 of these being Targas.

This 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa is coming to market from a whopping ~18 years of ownership with Peter. It comes with a great amount of history that details the upkeep and maintenance of the mechanical aspects of this sporting semi-convertible since new.

Presented in an attractive Grand Prix White over black pinstripe colourway the car turns heads at every Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club meet.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Coming out of ~18 years of beloved ownership, this Carrera 3.0 Targa has been Peter's pride and joy, joining him every TIPEC meet and road trip.

In 1976 Peter's cousin had a brand new Porsche 911 Targa and ever since, he has fancied owning one of his own. Then in 2005 the opportunity to purchase one arose, and Peter jumped at it, picking up this lovely 1977 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa finished in Grand Prix White.

Peter has thoroughly enjoyed ownership of this 911 Carrera 3.0 Targa over the previous 18 years. The car has been his pride and joy, he's had the car in his dry garage, reserved for sunny weekends and regular trips away with the Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club (TIPEC).

Peter has enjoyed this example for many years, however, due to lack of use and reserving the car for very exclusive drives out after the purchase of a classic Porsche Boxster, Peter has decided to part with the car to find a new owner, someone who will cherish and enjoy the car as much as he has.

Peter will be on hand to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The 911 Carrera 3.0 retained its sleek looks and distinctive style, now with wider rear wings to accommodate the wider tyres / track.

Wheels and Tyres

The 911 is fitted with 16" black centered Fuch's with Porsche badged valve caps. On this example, the wheels appear in good used condition, with minor signs of wear and the slightest signs of curbing.

The wheels are fitted with grippy Falken Ziex tyres and these appear to also be in great condition, dated 2016-17 with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking, or signs of age to the sidewalls that we could see.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this 911 looks in great condition for its age, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well. During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp.

We did notice some light stone chips, marks to the wing mirrors and minor corrosion around the offside front bumper - nothing too serious.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Presented in this iconic Grand Prix White colour, the paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

We did notice the odd very small and minor stone chip to the front of the car, however, you'll have to get really close to notice these, you can see these small defects in the photos and video below.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this 911 example looks great and in line with the ownership, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The black trim, door handles and window surrounds all look in good condition too. We did notice some slight corrosion around the Targa side badges on the black trim.

Please take a look at the exterior photos to see the Targa top in great condition too.

Interior

Black vinyl with pinstripe cloth offers a very attractive yet comfortable journey in the Carrera 3.0 - sit in the driver's seat and you'll notice everything is placed ergonomically to offer peak performance.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl with cloth pinstripe inners seats have held their shape very well over the years, as you would expect for cherished and careful ownership. There are only slight signs of age on the seats in terms of the expected creasing to the vinyl that comes with age.

A similar story is told with the door cards and black carpets. The door card pockets have started to lose their shape a little with age. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks in good condition and presents six black gauges with striking red needles in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this 911 shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~117,844 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A black leather three-spoke wheel is fitted. This original steering wheel presents in great condition and looks to be in line with the mileage of this car; the black gloss gearstick looks good too.

Take a look at the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Using the same 2993cc die-cast aluminium crank-case from its faster cousin - the Carrera 3.0 offers ~200 bhp on tap.

Engine and Gearbox

As mentioned, the Carrera 3.0 used the same die-cast aluminium crank-case from the legendary 930 Turbo and the 6-bolt flywheel and a crank from the legendary 73 Carrera RS.

On the day of our visit we started the car from cold, and the car performed well out on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Peter reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual 915 five-speed gearbox powering the rear wheels.

Please take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath the 911, and the smart rear mounted air-cooled engine.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition on this 911 and provided a smooth journey on the sweeping country roads the Cotswolds had to offer.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a 911 from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

An extremely fun yet performance-focused drive is offered in this 3.0-litre. Peter has loved using the car as his holiday and road trip transportation option - he joins many friends at The Independent Porsche Enthusiastic Club meets for many European road trips.

The 911 fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Peter, the car felt tight and positive, it had plenty of power to unleash on the straights and around sweeping corners. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

Peter reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car, except from the electrically adjustable mirrors that need some attention.

The car has a Panasonic stereo unit fitted with 4x Pioneer speakers.

History and Paperwork

Complete with an extensive history file, original service book and 18 years of previous ownership - this is one very well-looked-after example of the rare Carrera 3.0 Targa.

The car is coming out of a ~18 year ownership with Peter. The car has bags of originality and the same 2993CC die-cast aluminium crank-case engine from the 911 930 Turbo. Offering the driver ~200bhp - a little bit more oomph to it than the earlier cars.

Peter had the car tested on a Dyno Dynamics rolling road at Triton Motorsport in 2008, showing the car putting out 183bhp. The car comes with a black Targa top, a space saver spare wheel, and a very extensive history file with the original service book, showing the car's 18 main dealer services, all with Porsche Lancaster, Colchester. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts this 911 Carrera 3.0 has received over its life.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi
It looks like there were issues with the engine a couple of years ago – oil leaks, poor compression, misfires and at the last mot, black smoke on throttle. Have the engine issues been addressed? Sounds like It needs a rebuild?
