One of the most iconic versions of the 911, the impact bumper era is arguably one of the most popular too.

The Porsche 911 first arrived in 1964 to replace the 356. The rear-mounted air-cooled engine layout remained the same, however, the 911 switched to unitary construction for the body-shell and dropped the VW-based suspension in favour of the McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. Most importantly though, the engine was upgraded to an air-cooled flat six, a legendary change. Two years after the release of the introduction of the original coupe, Porsche announced their convertible variation, named the 'Targa' after their multiple wins in the Sicilian classic. The Targa featured a large roll-over bar to meet safety legislation and removable roof and hood sections that could fit in the front storage space.

We really like the look of this particular 911 SC Targa, coming to market from 7 years of ownership and having been restored to its former glory, this car will ticks a lot of boxes. Finished in a classic colour of Platinum Silver Metallic over beige interior, this UK RHD presents in excellent condition and comes with the UK dealer Sports options of whale tail, front sports spoiler, 16" Fuchs wheels and Bilstein dampers.

Meet the owner

Having owned a 924 in the 80s, the 911 is a car I've always wanted, I'm glad I managed to find and enjoy this one.

Adam came across this lovely 911 SC 7 years ago, a solid car but with opportunity to turn it back to its former glory. This was an ideal purchase for him, as it meant he knew exactly what he was getting with this classic Porsche. He commissioned a full respray and interior refit and trim, and has clearly cared for it in his ownership since.

Adam goes on to mention the grip and handling are outstanding, especially for the cars age, and mentions how quickly it can accelerate. He has another love in his life though, a recently acquired Austin Healey 100. Justifying keeping both of this icons has been a challenge, and so he's decided to find the SC a new home. Exterior

A modern classic, finished in Platinum Silver Metallic and desirable with its large whale tail.

Wheels and Tyres

As you would expect from a restored classic, the wheels have been given full attention. This 911 SC has 16" Sports Fuchs, colour matched to the body with an outer chrome polished lip. The wheels are wrapped in Continental ContiPremium Contact 2's all dated 2013. The tyres appear in great condition with very light signs of use.

The wheels look to have been finished to a very high standard and only have the slightest signs of wear since the restoration. Please take a look a the photos for a closer look.

Bodywork

Just as you would expect from a recent professional restoration, the bodywork is finished to a very high standard. Clean sweeping lines, complementing the elegant body shape of the 911.

Shut lines and panel gaps look great on this example, and Adam reports the doors require a firm hand to close, as the new door seals haven't yet bedded in. Please take a look at the photos and videos of the exterior to really appreciate this lovely Targa example.

Paint

The Platinum Silver Metallic paintwork has been applied to the body by professionals, it has a deep lustre throughout and the finish appears excellent. This 911 SC is ready to show. When getting really close to the car, we noticed the slightest signs of stone chips to the offside headlamp surround.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in great condition with no areas of concern to report, the door and glass rubbers are mentioned to have been replaced with the restoration. The black rubber trim on the car is very good too. The Targa top looks in good condition too, no marks or wear to note, just some creasing to the outer edges that comes with age when the top is kept folded and could benefit from some TLC.

Interior

Retrimmed to a very high stand, navigating from the cabin of this Targa is a thrilling experience.

Seats and Carpets

Retrimmed in beige, the cabin has a beautiful airy and light feel to it, particularly with the Targa top removed.As you would expect the condition of the seats is excellent, with no areas of concern to note. The carpets too have been recently replaced and all present to a very high standard.

We did notice some of the door jam rubbers require a little more glue having been new replacement items, and the passenger side wing mirror adjustment arm is missing. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look around this cockpit.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks in great condition with the original dials, switches, and black trim showing the character of the car.

The switches and controls are also fully functional and are in good condition with very little sign of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A sporty three-spoke steering wheel and a chromed Momo Italy gear shifter appear in great condition with very little wear throughout, the three spoke steering wheel is an original item which Adam had retrimmed as part of the restoration process.

Mechanics

A roaring rebuilt 3.0L block offering the driver ~204BHP at a moments notice; this 911 SC is ready to be enjoyed.

Engine and Gearbox

Adam reports that the car is powered by a 930/10 engine which offers ~204BHP at the tap of a pedal through the period 915 gearbox.

As well as being treated to a fresh cosmetic restoration, the car has seen its fair few mechanical services over the years, most notably an engine rebuild in 1999 some ~20,000 miles ago. This included new modern style head studs being fitted as well as new piston rings etc.

Please watch the mechanical video to see and hear the engine running smoothly. The car started the first time from cold. Also, take a look at Adam driving the car, and smoothly changing up and down the gears. The car also had the gearbox serviced including the synchros for 1st and 2nd being replaced in 2001 ~3,000 miles ago, and when Adam restored the car, all the major engine related pipes were renewed including the oil lines to the front cooler.

Suspension and Brakes

A selling point for the 911 was switching from the VW-based suspension to the McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. This offered plenty of grip and precise steering around any corner. This example has a sports package applied by the UK dealer and therefore has Bilstein gas-filled dampers.

Adam reports the brakes are working very well and just as you'd expect after the restoration this car has received. He mentions the suspension feels good too, no unusual knocks or noises to be noted.

The Drive

Strap in, it's a quick one! Adam mentions how much he loves driving this car. He goes on to mention the grip and handling are outstanding, especially for the age - the 911 was far ahead of its time, and set the standard for sports cars from then on.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a Kenwood aftermarket CD player (although Adam has never used it, he prefers to listen to the flat-six). To Adams knowledge, all the electrics are working as they should, with the exception of the interior light and the passenger door mirror which was an item fitted after the car left the factory.

History and Paperwork

A UK supplied RHD 911 SC with its classic Platinum Silver Metallic paintwork, and UK dealer Sports specification 16" body matching alloys, sporty whale tail and suspension.

This particular car has seen the benefits of a full respray in Platinum Silver Metallic and interior retrim in the current ownership. The 911 SC comes with a stack of history, receipts, and MOT history reports. It's just had a fresh MOT actioned with no advisories, and as part of the preparation for sale the indicator column and associated switch gear/wiring loom have been replaced due to an old fault.

This car benefits from having had a top end engine rebuild some ~20,000 miles ago in 1999, a gearbox rebuild in 2001 ~3,000 miles ago, a thorough going over with many ancillaries and important engine related pipes replaced in 2014 with the restoration, and regular oil servicing by Adam himself since then. Used sparingly on dry days in the summer, it's a car that has clearly been cherished over time.

The car is a 1981 model B-Series, it has a 930/10 engine coupled to a 915 gear box. UK dealer Sports options included: rear tail wing, front spoiler, Bilstein gas-filled dampers, Fuchs 16" alloys. Please feel free to ask Adam any questions you may have in the comments below.
