Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

An engaging and reliable drive with a unique visual appeal.

By the early '80s, Porsche was at a crossroads with the 911's future. Earmarked for deletion, a change of heart and a revival of the Carrera name proved to be a turning point for the 911. Offered with three body shapes, a Coupe, a Targa and a Cabriolet, all sporting a new 3.2-litre engine with numerous upgrades. Yuppies were overjoyed and took to the re-invigorated 911 in their droves and secured its place in 1980's social history.

Paul's 1983 example is a perfect period piece for the 911's best-remembered era. Finished in a decadent (but also official Porsche) Metallic Gold finish, which does actually work well for such a colour sensitive shape. First registered in October 1983, the car underwent a flat nose Turbo bodied (DS935) conversion in 1988 which was carried out by Dage Sport, a well known reputable Porsche specialist. Following the purchase of the car, Paul went about returning the car back to a more stock 911 look, but has retained the side skirts, rear quarter vents and the front glass fibre valance to give the car a very distinctive appearance.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn Parry after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the original 930 look, it's what drew me to this 3.2 widebody conversion when I first saw it.

Paul has owned the car for around a year, and has enjoyed using it in the summer months with his son Tom, in amongst their other 911's. The car has always been garaged, and rarely used in the wet as can be seen in the condition of the car.

Having had the opportunity to purchase a 911 Turbo from the 80's, Paul is now putting the 3.2 up for auction to find it a new home.

Exterior

The combination of 935 elements and 930 brutality gives this 911 an exclusive look.

Wheels and Tyres

Wheels have a nice gloss, nicely finished with a polished lip. They have some minor evidence of typical use - chips and small scratches but nothing significant to worry about. Bridgestone SO2’s all-round, with good wear.

Importantly, the car is sitting on the correct size wheels front and back, to fill those widebody arches correctly. Take a look through the photos for the detail.

Bodywork

Originally bought by the current owner with a flatnose conversion, the car has now been remodelled to a more traditional 911 front end. The renewal of the original panels have been fitted to a high standard.

Overall underside is good condition with no structural corrosion to the floorpan or around doorsills, watch the "Mechanics" video to see the detail of the underside.

Paint

The overall presentation of the paint is excellent, with a good deep paint finish and no unsightly marks or chips on the car.

Take a look at the exterior review video to see the quality of the paint finish.

Glass and Trim

The rubber trim is in good condition, showing a little wear in places. Two drill holes are present on the front rubber but will be hidden by the number plate. The glass is in good condition with no noticeable hazing, cracks or scratches.

Roof

The hood looks as new and is a very good fit and leak-free. There's an extra fan heater fitted as standard for cabriolets. The cover for when the roof is down is missing one button down clip, about the only fault we could find.

Interior

The 911's interior is compact yet accommodating, some patina in places as you'd expect on an 80's Porsche.

Seats and Carpets

The overall presentation of the interior is one of originality, with some small imperfections here and there.

The front seats show signs of drying out most likely due to sun exposure, with a handful of cracks. The rear seats look unused, and the carpets are good with matching Porsche mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard is complete with no significant damage, wrapped in matching brown leather to the seats and carpets. The instrument bevils have minor signs of ageing that is typical of this era of 911, but the dials are all fully functional.

The car comes with a recent Pioneer 4-speaker stereo CD MP3 player with remote control. Door cards have the usual expected age wear but are still in very presentable condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel shows the same signs of drying as the seats but again completely salvageable. The gearstick and console and adjusters are in good condition. Take a look through the pictures for the detailed view.

Mechanics

911s were famed for their engine note and still considered one of the best-performing sports cars.

Engine and Gearbox

Engine presentation is good, wiring loom is tidy, the engine is not going to win concours events but it behaved itself during the cold start. There was no smoke while being revved with no lights flashing on the dashboard, engine purring nicely in the autumn morning. The car also has a stainless exhaust.

Suspension and Brakes

All the running gear items are said to be in good working order, with no known issues with the bonus of recent new front brake calipers. The rear torsion bars aren't sagging.

The Drive

The appeal of an open-top Porsche is not necessarily to be seen, but rather to hear the glorious air-cooled engine at work. The nimble handling and comparatively compact dimensions live up to the excellent reputation these cars have generated over the years.

Electrics and Other

There are no significant issues with the car in terms of electrics, all are said to be fully operational. The engine lid strut will need replacing.

History and Paperwork

A "bullet-proof" 3.2L flat-six, with the good looks of the "LE" in gold, this is an 80's 911 through and through.

This car has been cherished all of its life, as one would expect from a rare breed. The 911 has lots of service history from new including all bills including the Dage conversion invoice, all old MOTs, tax discs and the original Porsche driver's / maintenance manual in a wallet with service stamps. It comes with 12 months MOT.

I Cannot find the paint code colour, can you confirm the Porsche colour please.

Hi BIGM,

I’ve done some digging, I’ve found it listed on the following website as the classic colour of “light bronze metallic”; https://type911shop.co.uk/All-Paint-Codes

Best,

Paul, the owner, has kindly confirmed that the colour is Hellbronze metallic. Rgds Garry

Good stuff, Hell = bright in German, so that makes sense. We’ll update the key details to reflect this. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics

Is there any more service history since 2007? All I can see on the images is some parts in 2014? Also is the listing correct that the tyres are from 2005/2006? Thanks!

Thanks
