Introduction

If you think of a serious '80s Porsche, then this is it: a Guards Red Convertible with the Whale Tail.

I purchased the car just under a year ago, with every intention of getting it really sorted. As such, I've had it serviced, and had the interior re-upholstered.

I originally planned to give it a full re-spray in future, not that it really needs it in my opinion: just personal choice. Unfortunately a change of circumstances means I now need to sell.

This example is a great usable car, with scope to improve over time. I welcome viewings and inspections.

This is the epitome of a classic Porsche, in Guards Red with the famous Whale Tail.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16’’ Fusch alloy wheels are in unmarked condition, with matching Continental tyres all round.

Bodywork

The car looks fantastic in Guards Red paint: all door shuts and panel gaps are even.

It's now a 43 year old car, so there are some areas of minor stone chips and a small area of damage under the rear bumper on the driver’s side as photographed.

Paint

The paint appears even across all panels.

Since being in storage over the winter, some minor bubbling has developed on both doors between the door mirrors and handles. I have tried to capture this in the photographs, but it doesn’t show up very well. The reserve is set accordingly.

Glass and Trim

All the Glass is in good condition, with no cracks or chips, and the rear plastic screen is clear with no milking.

A new roof was fitted in 2012, along with cables and elastics.

The trim is in very good condition for the age of the car.

Interior

This is the classic Porsche interior with the 5 gauge dashboard: all gauges function as they should.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats and head lining were refurbished in October of last year, costing almost £3,000.

The rear seats are in very original condition and look like they could be unused (see the photos).

Dashboard

The Dashboard and door cards are in original condition with no rips or tears.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the steering wheel and gear stick are original, and show wear commensurate with 43 years of use.

Mechanics

The engine starts on the turn of the key, even after a few months of storage over the winter.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine and gearbox are both smooth and responsive.

A new clutch was fitted in 2013, with only minor indicated mileage covered since.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension seems in good condition: the car sits nicely with no undue knocks when driving.

The brake discs were all replaced in 2013 as part of a major service, with only minor indicated mileage covered since.

The Drive

It starts first time every time, even after being parked up for a while, and then it drives fantastically - just as you would expect from a classic '80s Porsche. It pulls well through the gears and stops on a button.

The car drives fantastically, with excellent response. There are no undue knocks or bangs.

Electrics and Other

Not a great deal of electronics to explain on a car this age!

The front windows are electric and operate smoothly.

The roof is manual and easily operated.

There is a modern DAB stereo fitted, with hands free phone connectivity.

History and Paperwork

It was in storage at QV of London between 2013-2019. A service carried out in 2012 including new clutch and disc, with only minor mileage covered since, according to the invoices and odometer.

Regularly MOT tested, even during a time of long term storage and despite being registered as an historic vehicle - with new MOT expiring February 2027.
Last serviced September 25 including a gearbox oil change.
There isn't a massive history file with the car (it was lost by a previous owner), but I've shown the receipts for the major service in 2013 and most recent service in September 2025.
A new roof was fitted 2012.
There are receipts for other bits and pieces as shown.

Good afternoon, and thank you for your interest.
I am selling purely due to personal reasons.
As mentioned in the listing, it’s a great car no smoke or oil leaks that I am aware of.
The car drives great, as detailed in the listing, it had quite a major service along with a new clutch, with only minor mileage covered since.
As I say, I had every intention of getting it really sorted, having made a start with the seat re-furb.
But unfortunately circumstances change.

Hello, can you please elaborate on why you are selling the car so soon, doing a quick search it seems you purchased this car in July 2025, are there any issues with it? does the engine smoke at all on start up? is the gearbox ok, does it change gear smoothly? any oile leaks etc, the normal questions with cars like this, many thanks.
