Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

The bigger and more purposeful Porsche 944 hits the sweet spot in both price and performance.

First released in 1982 the Porsche 944 was based on the 924, but featuring considerably more striking contours as well as a redesigned front bumper with lower spoiler and wider, more angular wings.

Powered by a 2.5L inline four engine, the Porsche 944 produces ~163bhp which is plenty of power for the 1,180kg chassis. Combined with the typically low Porsche driving position and driver centric dashboard design, this meant the Porsche 944 offered an engaging and interactive experience for the driver.

This particular example has competed in multiple Porsche Club concours competitions, placing 3rd in the Porsche Club GB Chiltern Region competition of 1988. Since the the vehicle has been well maintained with regular servicing and maintenance, as can be seen in its extensive history.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Rob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This car was quite literally a poster car for me as a child, and when the opportunity to own one came around I simply couldn’t say no.

Rob has owned this car since June 2020, and when we spoke to him about his reason for purchasing the car he explained that as a child he had a poster of this car on his bedroom wall - only wearing red paint instead of the Zermat Silver of his own car.

Having always wanted to own one he looked at multiple vehicles, predominantly in red, before settling on this particular vehicle. Surprisingly despite having fantasised over the red painted 944 on his bedroom poster, he found the Zermat Silver to be a far more enticing colour.

Unfortunately having purchased the car shortly after the initial easing of lockdown restrictions, he had little chance to drive it before having a recent knee operation which has left him unable to use the car as he would like to - this is unfortunately why he has chosen to part ways with the car of his childhood dreams.

Exterior

The Zermat Silver paintwork shimmers an almost champagne gold in the sun, paired with the Fuchs wheels and strikingly contoured bodylines, this Porsche 944 is a well presented modern classic.

Wheels and Tyres

The Fuchs alloy wheels appear to be in good condition, with little visible damage or signs of corrosion, and no obvious issues that we could see. The painted centers aren’t suffering from any chips, scratches, or peeling paintwork, and the metal rims do not appear to be curb damaged or otherwise sullied.

The tyres whilst being manufactured circa 2011 appear to have good tread on them, and show no visible signs of degradation or damage to the outer sidewalls or tread surface.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork is in good condition, when photographing the car we noticed no misaligned panels, all bodylines looked matching and even, and all panels appeared straight.

We did notice one spot of damage just in front of the passenger rear wheel arch, this can be seen in our high resolution images below, however overall the car is definitely up to scratch with no obvious signs of damage or repair elsewhere on the vehicle.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car has had small areas painted in the past, presumably to deal with corrosion on lower sills. The paintwork appears to be an even and well matched colour, with no visible differences in texture or finish. The paint colour is Zermat Silver, which really does need to be seen to be appreciated as it has a gold tint in the sun that gives it an almost champagne shade under direct sunlight.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Featuring a large rear windshield that operates as the hatchback boot, the glass on this 944 is in good condition throughout, with no visible chips, cracks, or major scratches.

The trim is also in good condition, with the rear spoiler showing no heavy fading which can be common on plastic trims of this age.

Interior

Taking interior design cues from the 924, the 944 features comfortable part leather upholstery, and has a simplistic dashboard design with yellow lettering on the dials and gauges.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are part leather with grey / black berber cloth, they are in good condition throughout with no rips or tears, and provide a comfortable ride.

The interior carpets are also in good condition, showing no signs of wear through and retaining the original colour nicely, with little to no fading.

Dashboard

The dashboard is simplistic in its design, with all buttons, gauges, clocks, and vents easily within reach and easy to find. The condition of the dash is in keeping with the rest of the car, showing minimal signs of age and presenting well throughout.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel features the Porsche logo embossed in the leather, which is holding up well for the age of it. To the best of our knowledge the steering wheel has never been retrimmed or dyed and is the original item. It does show slight signs of use in the heavier traffic areas, however this does not take away from the overall appearance.

Mechanics

Powered by a 2.5L in-line four cylinder engine producing ~163bhp, the Porsche 944 provides a fun and engaging driving experience for both driver and passenger.

Engine and Gearbox

During our visit the engine started with little hesitation, and idled comfortably with no smoke on start up. When out in the vehicle on the road we didn’t observe the engine struggling for power, it accelerated on demand and without issue.

The manual gearbox seemed just fine, speaking to the owner Rob he described the gearbox as smooth and easy to operate and said the same again for the clutch, not struggling to find or hold the bite point when waiting at junctions.

Suspension and Brakes

The car drove nicely, with the suspension offering ample comfort whilst cruising and not making any untoward noises or crashing unnecessarily over bumps.

The brakes worked quickly and efficiently to stop the vehicle with no squealing or crunching, and when looking underneath the vehicle in our ‘On The Road’ video the callipers can be seen to be in good condition.

The Drive

Speaking to Rob he describes the car as being a pleasure to drive, it offers plenty of fun whilst giving a nostalgic and classic feel to the drive. During our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the car out on the road from a passengers perspective, and we must agree with Rob when we say that the car drives very well and has plenty of character.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we tested the electronic systems thoroughly and found all but the drivers side fog light to be working fully and as expected, including the pop up headlights which can be seen to be working in our exterior gallery below.

History and Paperwork

There's a good amount of paperwork dating back over nearly four decades, including concours competitions.

Rob has records of all maintenance, with stamps in the service book and further receipts for servicing and maintenance work.

The complete list of equipment on the car is as follows;

215/60 Tyres on Standard Rims
Sports Seats
Sun Roof
Alarm System
Cassette and Coin Holder
Fog Lights

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
