Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Beautifully engineered, agile, elegant and a delight to drive - the 911 is the epitome of the sports car.

1984 brought us the replacement for the SC (Super Carrera), this was the Porsche 911 Carrera (3.2). A claimed 80% new engine brought the higher-displacement over the previous 3.0 litre engine. New inlet and exhaust manifolds, together with the crankshafts from the 1978 Turbo 3.3, and increased compression ratio, boosted the 911 to 207BHP. The 915 gearbox from the SC was used up until 1987, when it was changed to the G50. Fitted with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection gave better fuel economy and lower emissions.

This example finished in Porsche's iconic "Guards Red" over black leather comes in the most desirable coupe form with sunroof. It is coming to market from the trade, having previously been with the former keeper for ~2 years. It most certainly appears to be an original car, looking at the paperwork in the extensive history file, it spent some time off the road from 2014 - 2018, and has only covered ~5,000 miles since the early part of 2012. A major service at ~128,022, around 550 miles from where it is now - all that is needed now is for a new owner to enjoy it!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Graham the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a big fan of '80s Porsches, especially ones with a high spec like this.

Graham is a trade seller, and a connoisseur when it comes to Porsche 911's, having owned a few in his time. He has a particular penchant for "drivers cars", and is always on the lookout for sports cars like this 911 that can give drivers a thrilling experience.

Prepped for sale, this car has been given a full machine polish and looks excellent in the winter sun. The previous owner bought the car from a friend, and spent some time fettling as a home enthusiast, as well as having a major service actioned. Properly maintained, these 3.2's are good for miles and miles, with the mileage sitting at ~128,500 this example presents excellent value for someone who wants the authentic analogue 911 experience.

Exterior

1980’s styling at its very best, the G-Body curves and elegant styling has made the 911 the icon as we know it today.

Wheels and Tyres

Classic wheels on a classic car, the Fuchs wheels look to be original and are in good condition. The Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres are all matching with a good amount of tread remaining, having been prepped they look lovely as a contrast black against the red paintwork.

The Fuchs are painted black as was the standard option for the model at the time, and fitted with black Porsche crest centre caps. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

In coupe form with sunroof, it is arguably the "one to have" for many. The panel fit of the doors etc looks to be as good for an 80s sports car like this, even in terms of fitment and easy to open and close.

There are no annoying dings looking down the sides of the 911, and the car looks corrosion free, no signs of issues in the common areas like under the headlights or the "kidney bowls".

Paint

What other colour would you even choose for a Porsche 911 Carrera apart from "Guards Red" - it looks fantastic with the black trim to highlight where needed. The 911 has been given a full detail which leaves the paintwork with a lovely lustre and depth, not the usual finish of swirl mark central that you'll see on 911's of this era.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show off the stunning 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera at its very best, just as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

Fitted with the iconic "whale tail", these 911's were the poster cars for many petrolhead in the 80's. All of the glass on the 911 is generally in good condition, with just some light age related marks as you would expect for the age and mileage.

The trim and rubbers look to be in good condition with no obvious signs of perishing. A new sunroof seat has been fitted, and lower down, the rubber trims that run down the sills look to be nice and straight.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Interior

Five dials with the rev counter centre stage is all you need to see to know you’re in a classic 911.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather and carpets across the cabin keep this a simple and driver focused affair. The seats do show some signs of age related wear as you would expect given the mileage, but this only goes as far as some creasing and light marks/colour loss to some of the leather.

The carpet does have some slight wear to the driver’s side, but again is in keeping with the age and mileage. View the photo gallery and video to see the detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks to be free from any splits and cracks which are often seen on vehicles of this age.

The instruments are in good working order, with the odometer reading ~128,567 miles. The bezels on the instruments are nice and clean, and the covers are clear with no obvious scratching to the plastic faces.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel in the 911 has been replaced with a more modern looking wheel, but still holds the all important Porsche crest. It is in good order with no signs of excessive wear.

A similar story with the gearstick, an aftermarket billet aluminium gear knob is engraved with the shift pattern and in good condition. Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

An air-cooled orchestra, the 3.2 flat-six 911 engine plays a wonderful symphony.

Engine and Gearbox

With the flick of the key, the 3.2 litre fires into life with that familiar sound you instantly recognise from the air-cooled flat-six, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. A well documented service history has shown that the 3.2 has been given lots of love over the years.

The gearbox in this Carrera is the earlier type 915 box, carried over from the SC model. The car is reported to change gear without any issues, Alan getting the chance to put the car through its paces to confirm this. There was a new clutch kit fitted at 97,388 miles, along with the main oil seal for good measure.

Suspension and Brakes

The Carrera sits nicely, and handles just as well as you would expect. It has benefitted from new dampers in the past, which is all documented in the history file. We would definitely encourage taking a look at this, but make sure you have plenty of time!

Cross drilled discs all around have been fitted to this example as an upgrade on the standard solid items. The red painted calipers wear a Porsche decal, and all look to be in good condition, with no obvious lip to the edge of the discs. A recent brake fluid change means that this is taken care of for a while, and the stopping power is as it should be with no juddering reported to come through the pedal.

The Drive

With some spirited driving, the 911 can take you by surprise, but with some practice you’ll soon have a take on what not to do, and what to do. The 3.2 litre air-cooled 911 with the sound and the analogue feel is certainly intoxicating to say the least, and something that every petrolhead should experience.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear looks to be in good order with no signs of excessive wearing to the buttons. The electric windows and sunroof operate as they should, and at a good speed too.

History and Paperwork

A coupe in Guards Red with sunroof looking in excellent condition and boasting an extensive history file, this 911 is one that's been clearly cherished by every owner.

You should get comfortable for this one, with your drink of choice and maybe a snack to hand! With invoices dating back to the mid 1980’s right up to present day, there is extensive paperwork, showing just how much this wonderful 911 has been cared for by every owner. From new clutches, to brake discs, shock absorbers bushes and suchlike, it's clear to see that the 911 has wanted for nothing over the years, and it’s a testament to the previous owners. It also has the owner’s folder with the service book, which shows a healthy number of stamps.

Please review all the paperwork to see just what work and parts have been carried out on the car

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.

Hi, can you share details of what may be wrong with the gearbox please? In the paperwork there are references to Gearbox? Also in the driving video the guy appeared to miss a gear. Any further info appreciated. Cheers

Having driven the car for only a few miles the gearbox felt fine to me, well spotted I did fluff up one gear change but the gearbox is fine and the clutch is nice and light.
