Introduction

Alan
Automotive Photographer

Growing up in the '80s, the Porsche 911 was probably one of the cars you lusted after - be prepared for that lust to come back with this car.

1984 brought us the replacement for the SC (Super Carrera), this was the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2. A claimed 80% new engine brought the higher-displacement over the previous 3.0 litre engine. New inlet and exhaust manifolds, together with the crankshafts from the 1978 turbo 3.3, and increased compression ratio boosted the 911 to 207bhp. The 915 gearbox from the SC was used up until 1987, where it was then changed to the G50. Fitted with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection gave better fuel economy and lower emissions.

This particular model we have here is finished in Guards Red with black leather to finish the interior. It most certainly looks to be an original car looking at the paperwork in the extensive history file. It spent some time off the road from 2014 - 2018, and has only covered around 5,000 miles since the early part of 2012.

A major service at 128,022, around 400 miles from where it is now - all that is needed is for the new owner to enjoy it!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Lawrence the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm lucky enough to have owned a number of cars from Porsche over the years, from 356's all the way through to Boxsters.

Lawrence came across this lovely 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 via a friend who was selling it, and he purchased the car to help his friend out.

A true classic car nut, he's been a member of Porsche Club GB since owning a number from the marque since 1996. He's also a keen historic motorsport competitor, owning an Austin Healey Sebring Sprite which he competes in.

Lawrence bought the car for himself in November 2020 and has since had some paintwork completed on the car to bring it to a standard he's happy with. Having enjoyed the car and time spent fettling etc, he's now looking to downsize his collection, and as a result is now looking to find a new enthusiast to take it over this 3.2 He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The exterior of this iconic car is lovely - ready to take to shows and enjoy.

Wheels and Tyres

Classic wheels on a classic car, the Fuchs wheels look to be original and are in good condition.

Being picky, they do have some light scratches to the faces and the rims could do with a little polish to freshen them up. That said, there doesn't look to be any damage to them, so not much of a job for the keen DIY mechanic or your local wheel refurbishing company.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres are all matching with decent tread left.

Bodywork

The Carrera looks to be in excellent condition all round and seems to have no troublesome areas that we could see. The common areas in the lower corners under the windscreen look to be free from any corrosion. The panel fit of the doors looks to be as good as it should and is equal on both sides.

Lawrence has fitted a nice looking fibreglass ducktail spoiler, and the fitment has been executed perfectly. The original engine cover is included with the car and photos are in the gallery.

Paint

What other colour would you even choose for a Porsche 911 Carrera apart from Guards Red - it looks fantastic with the black trim to highlight where needed.

Lawrence tells us the 911 has the original paint to the bonnet and roof. He has painted the sides and engine cover together with the ducktail spoiler. There are some light swirl marks to the roof which have accumulated over the years, but these could easily be removed with a detailing.

Glass and Trim

All the glass on the 911 is generally in good condition with just some light age related wear. The trims and rubbers also look to be in good condition with no obvious signs of perishing. The sunroof seal does show some signs of wear and has started to split slightly. The rubber trims that run down the sills look to be nice and straight.

Interior

Five clocks and a Porsche crested steering wheel is all you need to see to know you’re in a classic 911.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather was the order of the day when the Porsche rolled off the production line in 1985. The seats do show some signs of age related wear as you would expect, but this only goes as far as some creasing and a little colour loss to some of the leather. Quite an easy fix to do yourself with the products that are now available for this job.

The carpet does have some slight wear to the driver’s side but is in keeping with the age and mileage.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks to be free from any splits and cracks which are quite common on older cars. The instruments are in good working order, with the odometer reading 128,449. The bezels on the instruments are nice and clean, and the covers are clear with no obvious scratching to the plastic faces.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and the gear-knob have been replaced at some point for a more modern looking feel. Both are in nice condition with no real signs of excessive wear.

Mechanics

The 911 3.2 litre air-cooled engine is the only soundtrack you will ever need.

Engine and Gearbox

First flick of the key and the 3.2 litre fires into life with that familiar sound you instantly recognise from the air-cooled flat-six. A well documented service history has shown the 3.2 has been given lots of love over the years.

The gearbox in this Carrera is the earlier type 915 box carried over from the SC model. The car is reported to change gear without any issues. There was a new clutch kit fitted at 97,388 miles.

Suspension and Brakes

The Carrera sits just nice, and rides just as well. It has benefitted from new dampers in the past, which is all documented in the history file that we would encourage taking a look at.

Cross drilled discs all round with painted red calipers wearing a Porsche decal all look to be in good condition with no obvious lip to the edge of the discs. A recent brake fluid change means this is taken care of for a while, and the stopping power is as it should be.

The Drive

With some spirited driving, the 911 can take you by surprise, but with some practice you’ll soon have a take on what not to do, and what to do. The air-cooled 911 with the sound and the feel is definitely something that every petrolhead should experience .

Electrics and Other

Lawrence reports that the switchgear is all in good working order. The electric windows operate nice and smoothly and the electric sunroof opens and closes with ease.

History and Paperwork

Boasting an extensive history file, this 911 is one that's been clearly cherished by every owner.

Grab a coffee and your favorite pack of biscuits, because you will get through them reading the history on this lovely 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera.

With invoices dating back to the mid 1980’s right up to present day, there is everything listed from new clutch, to brake discs, shock absorbers bushes and suchlike. It has the owners folder with the service book, which has a healthy number of stamps.

We have listed the services that have been stamped in the book, however, please review all the paperwork to see other services / work carried out on the car.

We have actioned our usual checks on the seller, V5 and HPi clear.
