Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

With a more masculine presence, the successor to the 924 is certainly a desirable transaxle Porsche to own.

Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 to replace the 924 as its entry-level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as a lower-priced alternative. Many Porsche enthusiasts considered the 944 to be the first real front-engined Porsche because it didn’t have the Audi-sourced 2.0-litre engine from the 924. Instead, the 944 started life with a 2.5-litre straight-4 engine, which was based on one-half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine.

Starting with the earlier 924 body, some noticeable changes included flared wings, flared quarter panels, and a larger rear spoiler. In 1985, the 944 underwent its first significant changes. The interior was given a facelift and a much more modern feel and look, with a completely new dash and door panels. To help keep those lines nice and smooth, the radio aerial was moved from the standard vertical position, instead being embedded in the windscreen. Other changes included new front and rear cast aluminium control arms and semi-trailing arms, and a larger fuel tank.

This lovely, usable example of the 944 comes from eleven and a half years with our vendor, and features Fuchs wheels, sports seats, and all-important new sills. It also comes with a fresh MOT despite being MOT and road tax exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Doug the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“I just love cars from this era, and it’s been a pleasure to have in my collection”.

Doug is pretty much obsessed with cars and bikes from the ‘yuppie era’, and around eleven and a half years ago, this Crystal Green 944 Lux was too good a find not to add to his collection.

During its ownership, the 944 has spent all of its time in dry storage at a previous address before being moved to Doug’s current address, which has underground dry storage.

Now planning to move a few cars around and buy some others, it’s time to let someone else have the pleasure of this proper '80s sports car.

Doug would be happy to answer any questions in the in the comments section below.

Exterior

Wide flared arches took the basic shape of the 924 to the next level.

Wheels and Tyres

A previous keeper fitted a set of the much more desirable factory-upgrade Fuchs alloy wheels. These appear to have been restored at some point and are in generally good condition, with just a couple of minor age-related blemishes.

All four tyres are in good condition and are said to have covered approximately 1,500 miles.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The 944’s bodywork is in excellent condition. Doug had the sills replaced and any corrosion to the inner sills cut out, which can be seen in the photographs; for those who know 944s, this is a common area for concern that's been addressed. The panels align well, with no dings or dents spotted.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Crystal Green Metallic', the paintwork is in very good condition: some areas were refreshed a couple of years ago, as documented in the history file, and, more recently, the new sills were painted. There are a couple of minor blemishes, which are in keeping with age and mileage, but nothing that stands out.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition, with only light age-related marks. The seals are also in quite good condition. The windscreen trim does need to be stuck down at the driver's corner, as this keeps popping out; but it should be an easy fix.

The electric sunroof works as it should, and for those summer days, the roof panel can easily be removed and stowed in the original storage bag, which is included.

In true 80s style, the pop-up lights work as you would expect, and no damage was spotted on the front or rear lenses.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Fitted with upgraded half-leather sports seats, which are perfectly suited to the 944.

Seats and Carpets

A previous keeper upgraded the seats to half-leather/velour pinstripe sports seats, which have much bigger side bolsters and hold you nice and tightly. The front and rear seats are in excellent condition, with no damage.

The carpets are also in good order, with no real signs of heavy use. A set of beige Porsche fitted mats is also included, and in excellent condition.

Inside the boot, the spare wheel is in place along with the original tool kit.

image

Dashboard

During mid-1985, Porsche 944s received an upgraded dashboard known as the ‘Oval style’ dashboard, which has a more modern look than the earlier style. This is in excellent condition, with no damage. We did notice three small holes on the side of the centre console, most likely from a car phone at some point during the yuppie era.

The instruments appear to be in good order, with all the gauges working correctly and no warning lights displayed. The odometer showed the mileage at ~109,096 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original four-spoke leather steering wheel is in very good condition, with only light age-related shine on the rim. The gear knob is also in good order.

image

Mechanics

The 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produces around 163 bhp. When combined with a near 50/50 weight distribution, it's a fantastic, exciting car to drive.

Engine and Gearbox

From cold, the engine fires up without hesitation and runs smoothly, performing superbly, with no issues reported.

Doug has recently had a new radiator fitted.

The gears in the five-speed gearbox are easy to select, and the car pulls extremely well through the range, which you can see in our Mechanical Review video.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the car handles brilliantly, just as you would expect from a car with pretty much a 50/50 weight distribution.

There are no knocks or bangs from any corner of the car, and the brakes bring it to a stop quickly and in a straight line, with no problems noted.

image

The Drive

Driving a transaxle-design Porsche is an exercise in sublime balance and analogue connection, thanks to its front-engine layout paired with a gearbox at the rear.

As mentioned, the 944 boasts a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution that makes cornering effortlessly neutral, predictable and remarkably planted; something that any Porsche or driving enthusiast should certainly experience.

image

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear works as it should, with only light wear to some of the lettering on a couple of the switches. It also has an upgraded Sony CD head unit.

image

History and Paperwork

A healthy history file suggests the 944 has been well cared for.

Even though Doug hasn’t given the 944 much use, he's kept it in good order and always had any work done when needed. There are receipts for various parts purchased over the years, which have helped keep the classic 944 in the condition you see here today.

Ready to jump in and enjoy straight away? This 1986 Porsche 944 ticks lots of boxes. The common problem of the sills corroding has been attended to, the car has a great history, and it's fitted with upgraded sports seats and finished in the desirable Crystal Green Metallic – what's not to love about this 80s classic Porsche?

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note that this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
