Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Many consider the 911 Carrera (3.2) peak air-cooled Porsche, the last iteration of the G-body cars.

By the early '80s, Porsche was at a crossroads with the 911's future. Earmarked for deletion, a change of heart and a revival of the Carrera name proved to be a turning point for the 911. Offered with three body shapes, a Coupe, a Targa and a Cabriolet, all sporting a new 3.2-litre engine with numerous upgrades. Yuppies were overjoyed and took to the re-invigorated 911 in their droves and secured its place in 1980's social history.

This example is coming out of 25 years family ownership, in the desirable coupe form and a later car with the G50 5 speed gearbox. Finished in "Diamond Blue Metallic" (L697) with a two tone leather finish to the interior. This car was also optioned from factory with sports seats, and the dealer only options for 16" fuchs and sports shocks. Coming with a history file that shows regular servicing over the ownership, this is a great example ready to be driven.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Dan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This was my dad's pride and joy, it's been in the family for what seems like forever.

Dan's father owned and ran Lucky Motors in Tower Bridge for over 30 years working as a mechanic his whole adult life until he passed away just recently. Locals knew his garage was always filled with beautiful high-end cars, but he always loved his Porsches. Over his life time he has had numerous models, from 924’s through to 911's. Throughout his collection which also consisted of quite a few classic Mercedes-Benz, this 911 3.2 always his favourite. Even towards the end of his life, we discussed selling this car and he could still not go through with it. When he purchased this 911 back in 1996, he swapped out the Fuchs for more modern Cup Alloys as pictured, and also fitted a silencer with two exhaust outlets, common upgrades that owners made in the 90s.

Dan remembers the first day his dad picked him up in this car from primary school, a full circle with Dan now being a teacher with a family of his own. He's always seen this car as his dads, and not being able to enjoy it with him any longer is a painful reality. As a result, Dan feel it needs to go to an enthusiast who will cherish it and hopefully enjoy it as much as his dad did.

Exterior

Last of the G Bodied 911's, this coupe has the iconic silhouette and whale tail.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 16" Cup Alloys, these were modifications that Dans dad carried out when he purchased the car. They present in very good condition, the paint looking great, just some small marks/wear on some of the centre caps. The wheels are fitted with Nankang tyres all round.

Bodywork

In the coupe with sunroof option, this is one of the most sought after 911 3.2 combinations. Fitment of the panels and doors etc looks great on this example, and you'll see from the B pillars on both side of the car that it appears these remain the originals.

The car has clearly been dry stored over the years which is why we didn't observe any signs of corrosion in some of the typical places. We did notice some corrosion on the rear bumper by the rubber overriders as pictured.

Paint

Finished in the Porsche colour of Diamond Blue Metallic, it's a colour that takes on may facets depending on the light it's viewed in.

On this example, the paintwork looks in great condition as pictured. There are a few small marks near the Porsche logo on the bonnet, and the paint on the leading edge seems to have lost some paint. This in addition to a couple of stone chips to the wing mirror casing are the only nicks we observed. View the photos and videos for a detailed look.

Glass and Trim

All the glass across the car looks in great condition. The trim looks good too, no wear observed, but the rubber elements look a little faded, something that could probably be brought back to a solid black using the appropriate detailing products.

Interior

A classic Porsche interior, full leather Sports seats with deep bolsters keep you sitting firm in the drivers seat.

Seats and Carpets

Optioned with the Sports seats (383, 387) from factory, the deeper bolster and electric adjustment help you to set-up the seating to requirement. They are finished in dark blue with cream inserts.

The car has covered close to 100,000 miles in its life and the condition of the seats if reflective of the miles covered. They would benefit from a detailing and some leather treatment to help maintain the leather for years to come. As pictured, the drivers side outer bolster piping has worn away, but other than this there are no rips or tears to the leather.

Dashboard

The black backed dials with contrasting orange needles look in great condition, clearly legible. The metal rings and rubber surrounds show typical signs of wear you see on 911's of this generation. Take a look at the photos for a detailed view.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with stock items, the steering wheel and gearstick look in great condition. On the gearstick, both the gear-knob and gaitor don't show any excessive signs of wear.

Mechanics

Known to be a bullet proof block when regularly maintained, the 3.2 gives you that visceral 911 experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started up from cold with no full, a familiar chattering from the engine that you get from these air-cooled blocks. The car has seen regularly servicing as documented in the history section.

Later 3.2's like this example are fitted with what many say is a more usable and desirable gearbox, known as the G50. Dan reports that the gearbox and clutch operate without any known issues.

Suspension and Brakes

This car was optioned with the Sports shock absorbers (474), a UK dealer network only option, they are said to give better damping than the stock items. The brake calipers on this example have been painted red to add some contrast to the wheels, and Dan reports the suspension is in fine fettle, no advisories showing in the last 10 years of MOT history.

The Drive

Yes, it's rear-engined and yes, it has no power steering and the pedals need a certain knack to master, but that's where the appeal of these early air-cooled 911's comes from. There are simply no other cars that compare to it. Drive a 911 and any driving enthusiast will understand what the fuss is all about.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with the electric height adjustable seats and electric sunroof, Dan reports that all the electrics on the car are working correctly to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD (C16) coupe with G50 gearbox, it's one of the most desirable combinations for a 3.2, coupled with service history charting the ownership make this a solid example coming to market.

The car comes with stacks of paperwork charing the family ownership back to 1996, this coupled with the condition of the bodywork make it a cracking example.

Looking at the data sticker in the bonnet, car was optioned with what some call the "Sports" package, a UK dealer only set of options that included elements like the Sports shocks. This car also has the deeper bolstered Sports seats, and was originally optioned with 16" fuchs.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

Hi Dan
Having a quick look do you think the car would look better with the headlining replaced, it’s a little difficult to see from the pictures. Rgds graham.

Hi Dan,
In the video, it looks like the front driver tyre is badly damaged with a chunk missing and a nasty looking split.
I can see it only recently received an MOT but would it be safe to drive away.
Thanks

Hi drewg, no the originals are not present, as mentioned in the write-up Dans dad swapped them out for the modern wheels early in his ownership. Best, Kulraj – Trade Classics
