Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Iconic looks, a soulful flat-six, and the freedom of open-top driving, all wrapped in timeless 911 character.

The Porsche 911 Carrera Targa (3.2) represents the sweet spot of the air-cooled era, where classic Porsche character meets everyday usability. Its instantly recognisable silhouette, timeless proportions, and distinctive brushed-steel Targa bar give it unmistakable presence, whether parked or carving down a winding road.

At its heart lies the legendary 3.2-litre flat-six - an engine revered for its durability, responsiveness, and unmistakable air-cooled soundtrack. Power delivery is smooth yet purposeful, offering a deeply engaging, analogue driving experience that modern cars simply can’t replicate. The steering is communicative, the chassis perfectly balanced, and every drive feels like an occasion.

The Targa roof adds another layer of appeal, allowing you to enjoy open-air motoring without sacrificing the structure and refinement of a coupe. Practical, charismatic, and endlessly rewarding to own, the Carrera Targa is not just a classic 911, it’s one of the most usable and desirable examples of Porsche’s golden era with the desirable G50 gearbox too.

This lovely example, comes to market from ~10 year ownership and has been garaged stored with its current keeper.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Quick when you need it to be and that incredible styling - it's a car I've been really proud to own.

Simon, the current owner, has always been a fan of fast, older cars, having owned several different models through his time driving.

Simon was on the lookout for something just right when he saw this example for sale, he said, "I jumped at the opportunity to pick up this 911, I always wanted to get one and was looking for many months before coming across something I really liked. It was hard to find a decent car with good condition at realistic price and this is the one I decided on".

Although the Porsche has been one of Simon's favourite cars that he's owned so far, the time has come to part ways with the Targa, he said, "I've loved my time with the car, but I have another Porsche (930 Turbo) at home and unfortunately, I don't have the space to keep both - I needed to make a decision on which one I sold, and I decided to part ways with the Targa".

Should you have any questions about the car, Simon would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

Sweeping lines, muscular rear arches, and the iconic Targa bar combine to create a shape that’s instantly recognisable and forever timeless.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 16" 5-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels with Porsche centre emblems. All appeared to be in lovely condition, just a couple of age related marks and some slight wear to the finish at the centre, although nothing major here.

The front of the 911 is fitted with Bridgestone tyres and a spec of 205/55 from 2006. To the rear, the car was fitted with Avon's with a spec of 225/50 date coded from 2015.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork of the 911 showed in lovely overall condition. Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned and no major dings or dents were spotted when looking around the car.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Showing well in a smart finish of red, the coverage is even across the car with no noted imperfections to colour.

We didn't note any real concerns with the paint apart from a small paint chip to the petrol cap and handful of small marks across the front of the car. There was also a minor blemish to the finish at the base of the drivers headlight.

Overall though, the car looked really stand out, and it was clear a lot of effort had gone into its upkeep.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, front and rear lights all appear in excellent condition, and we could see no signs of scratching or chips on the glass.

Badges and emblems are present and look very smart.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The interior cabin trim sections showed well, just a couple of very minor marks.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

Inside, it’s classic Porsche - clean, driver-focused, and unmistakably 911, with crisp analogue dials and timeless air-cooled character.

Seats and Carpets

The seats showed well and looked presentable - there was some minor wear to the driver's bolster and passenger seat base, as to be expected for the age of the car.

The rear seats showed with little use, displaying well here.

Black carpets show in a great condition, with the boot reflected the same standard as the cabin, showing well. Underneath the cabin carpets on the floor pans, showed no concerning issues, just signs of age to the finish.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console all appears in good shape, and no real concerns.

The classic 5 dial set up in the Porsche looked great and these were all functioning as expected. The odometer showed with ~125,333 miles at the time of our visit.

The switches and controls all appear to be in really nice condition, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge and oil temp and were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Porsche steering wheel is in keeping with the rest of the interior - no major issues to report.

The gear stick looks to be in good condition, although some wear to the gear knob surround.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

The Porsche boasts a legendary 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six - richly mechanical, bursting with character and delivering that unmistakable 911 soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up, we noted no concerns and the Porsche performed without issue when running and out on the road. The car idled smoothly and its engine was easily capable of taking the driver up to speed in no time at all.

Simon, the current owner, mentions that he's never had an issue with the engine, starting first time through his ownership.

The G50 manual gearbox is mechanical in its setup and showed no concerns with shifting the 911 through to the gears.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, noted no observed issues and the car felt solid on the road.

The brakes had no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem, and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

The Targa delivers a driving experience that’s raw, mechanical, and deeply involving. With its air-cooled flat-six singing behind you and the classic rear-engine balance demanding respect, it rewards smooth inputs and confident commitment.

Steering is alive with feedback, the chassis feels light and communicative, and every drive becomes a conversation between driver, road, and machine - pure, old-school Porsche at its best.

image

Electrics and Other

Being an older model Porsche, the car has limited electrical functions. During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in good overall condition.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Simon told us everything was in working order.

image

History and Paperwork

With servicing carried out less than ~4,000 miles ago, this garaged stored Targa is a great example of a well cherished 911.

Simon, the current owner has owned the car for the past ~10 years, using it on and off over his ownership. The car has not been used in poor weather and has been garaged through its time with Simon. Overall, it's a car that has been really cherished.

The options on the car include:

058 Bumpers with impact absorbers
286 High intensity windscreen washer
330 Radio Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46
335 Automatic 3 point rear seat belts
341 Central locking system

474 Sport shock absorbers (Bilsteins)

There's a record of the speedometer being changed on 07.04.1989 - with a recorded addition of 12,871 miles to that shown on the clock, based on this paperwork it's assumed the current mileage is also +12,871.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi ya
On Cazoo it says it’s Tiptronic which I assume means sportomatic but on trade classics it says it’s manual. Could you clarify please. Regards. Garry

Hi Simon, you state that you do not typically take the car out in the rain but do you know if it watertight? Have you been caught in the rain and had a chance to test it against leaks? Also does it start ok after sitting for long periods (many weeks) unused? Does it drain the battery when sitting unused or do you disconnect the battery when not using?
Thanks.

Hi Simon

Forgot to ask about the n/s/f wing just below the headlamp.
Is it bubbling rust or a stop chip that has been touched up?

Thanks
Dave

Hi smon it looks like a nice car and I have a few questions for you. I will not be able to view the car but would like to establish a bit more about the details Firstly around the service history, in your ownership how has the car been maintained? It appears from the Amoy history much of the last 10 years the car has been off road. There are various invoices for replacement interior parts and a few other ancilliary items in that time but in terms of service, Since 2016 the car has covered c.1500 miles. How have the oils, brake fluids, trans fluids, bushes etc been maintained in that time please and are there invoices for this or at least the parts.

Then onto bodywork and exterior. Did you have the 2016 renovation of the roof and interior and seals done or was that before your ownership? I’m interested in whether the car was repainted at that time and if any extensive bodywork was done. It would be common to see kidney bowls and so on. Dis you have the car thoroughly inspected when you purchase and how certain are you about the car’s integrity below the paint – jacking points, inner sills and so on? You may have had an inspection done or some work or had a good prod around?

And finally does the car drip any oil, even the smallest amount, on the floor after parking?

Hi Simon

Thanks for your response.
I’ve had the same trouble trying to log in.

Please could you also look into the following and get back to Me.

I’d appreciate it you could watch the video “on the road”.
At the time interval of 5.44 when showing under the front valance,
It definitely looks like corrosion.

The engine cover rubber stops are in pic 10/71, but you have to zoom in.
Looking again, it might be a reflection from the paint.

In picture 54/71 there seems to look like corrosion where the Two sills meet the wheel arch.

Kind Regards
Dave

Hi Simon
Please can you explain the following…1.overspray on the exhaust and Engine cover rubbers?
2. How bad is the corrosion on the front valance near the towing eye?
Thanks
Dave
